THE PILGRIMS IN THE NEW ENGLAND COLONIES SETTLED
THERE BECAUSE THEY WANTED FREEDOM OF RELIGION.
AGRICULTURE: THEY MAY NOT HAVE HAD A LOT OF SOIL BUT
THEY TOWNS AROUND HAD FARMS THAT WERE OWNED BY
THE WORKERS.
COMMERCE: PEOPLE IN THE NEW ENGLAND COLONIES WERE
REALLY BIG ON COMMERCE, THE TRADE WITH ENGLAND
ALLOWED SHIP HOLDERS TO FLOURISH. THEY TRADED WITH
THE WEST INDIES AND THE FRENCH COLONIES TO THE
NORTH.
FISHING: THE FISHING INDUSTRY WAS BIG. OVER FISHING WAS
WHALING WHICH HELPED THEM BRING IN MONEY.
THE MIDDLE COLONIES
• DELAWARE
• NEW YORK
• NEW JERSEY
• PENNSYLVANIA
• PEOPLE IN THE MIDDLE COLONIES SETTLED THERE TO PRACTICE
THEIR OWN RELIGION OR MAKE MONEY.
• THE MIDDLE COLONIES WERE PART AGRICULTURE, WHEAT AND
OTHER GRAINS GREW ON THE FARMS.
• THEY HAD FACTORIES IN MARYLAND THAT PRODUCED IRON
• AND FACTORIES IN PENNSYLVANIA THAT PRODUCED PAPER AND
TEXTILES.
• THEY HAD JOBS FOR PEOPLE TO DO THE FARMING AND BE ABLE TO
WORK IN THE FACTORIES
THE SOUTHERN COLONIES
• MARYLAND
• NORTH CAROLINA
• VIRGINIA
• GEORGIA
• WANTED TO MAKE MONEY
• THEY WERE MOSTLY AGRICULTURE
• THEY HAD LARGE PLANTATIONS WHICH HAD A VARIETY OF CROPS
THAT THEY COULD GROW WHICH REQUIRED NEEDING WORKERS
• THEY WOULD USE THE SLAVES THAT THEY BROUGHT ON THE SHIP
TO DO THEIR LABOR WORK
THE GREAT AWAKENING
• RELIGION WAS A GREAT INFLUENCE AND THE GREAT AWAKENING PLAYED AN
IMPORTANT ROLE IN THE AMERICAN COLONIES.
• SOMETIMES PIONEERS WERE FAR AWAY FROM TOWN TO ATTEND CHURCH
GATHERINGS SO THEY HAD REVIVALS THAT DEVELOPED THROUGHOUT THE
COMMUNITIES
ENLIGHTENMENT THINKING
• THE ENLIGHTENMENT THINKING HAD AN IMPACT ON THE WAY PEOPLE
THOUGHT ABOUT RELIGION AND THE GOVERNMENT, AND THEIR REASON
BEHIND IT. IT ALSO HAD AN IMPACT ON THE COLONIES EDUCATION THE
COLLEGES MAIN PURPOSE WAS TO TRAIN MINISTERS BUT THE ENLIGHTENMENT
OPENED UP EDUCATION FOR BEYOND THAT PURPOSE.
TRIANGULAR TRADE
• THE TRIANGULAR TRADE THEY TAKE SLAVES CAPTIVE AND HAVE CROPS AND
TRADE THEM WITH PEOPLE AND SOME WOULD SELL THE SLAVES AND/OR HAVE
THE SLAVES WORK FOR THEM

New England Colonies Guide: Religion, Agriculture, Fishing Drove Settlement

  • 1. NEW ENGLAND COLONIES • MASSACHUSETTS • NEW HAMPSHIRE • RHODE ISLAND • CONNECTICUT
  • 2. THE PILGRIMS IN THE NEW ENGLAND COLONIES SETTLED THERE BECAUSE THEY WANTED FREEDOM OF RELIGION. AGRICULTURE: THEY MAY NOT HAVE HAD A LOT OF SOIL BUT THEY TOWNS AROUND HAD FARMS THAT WERE OWNED BY THE WORKERS. COMMERCE: PEOPLE IN THE NEW ENGLAND COLONIES WERE REALLY BIG ON COMMERCE, THE TRADE WITH ENGLAND ALLOWED SHIP HOLDERS TO FLOURISH. THEY TRADED WITH THE WEST INDIES AND THE FRENCH COLONIES TO THE NORTH. FISHING: THE FISHING INDUSTRY WAS BIG. OVER FISHING WAS WHALING WHICH HELPED THEM BRING IN MONEY.

  • 4. • PEOPLE IN THE MIDDLE COLONIES SETTLED THERE TO PRACTICE THEIR OWN RELIGION OR MAKE MONEY. • THE MIDDLE COLONIES WERE PART AGRICULTURE, WHEAT AND OTHER GRAINS GREW ON THE FARMS. • THEY HAD FACTORIES IN MARYLAND THAT PRODUCED IRON • AND FACTORIES IN PENNSYLVANIA THAT PRODUCED PAPER AND TEXTILES. • THEY HAD JOBS FOR PEOPLE TO DO THE FARMING AND BE ABLE TO WORK IN THE FACTORIES
  • 5. THE SOUTHERN COLONIES • MARYLAND • NORTH CAROLINA • VIRGINIA • GEORGIA
  • 6. • WANTED TO MAKE MONEY • THEY WERE MOSTLY AGRICULTURE • THEY HAD LARGE PLANTATIONS WHICH HAD A VARIETY OF CROPS THAT THEY COULD GROW WHICH REQUIRED NEEDING WORKERS • THEY WOULD USE THE SLAVES THAT THEY BROUGHT ON THE SHIP TO DO THEIR LABOR WORK
  • 7. THE GREAT AWAKENING • RELIGION WAS A GREAT INFLUENCE AND THE GREAT AWAKENING PLAYED AN IMPORTANT ROLE IN THE AMERICAN COLONIES. • SOMETIMES PIONEERS WERE FAR AWAY FROM TOWN TO ATTEND CHURCH GATHERINGS SO THEY HAD REVIVALS THAT DEVELOPED THROUGHOUT THE COMMUNITIES
  • 8. ENLIGHTENMENT THINKING • THE ENLIGHTENMENT THINKING HAD AN IMPACT ON THE WAY PEOPLE THOUGHT ABOUT RELIGION AND THE GOVERNMENT, AND THEIR REASON BEHIND IT. IT ALSO HAD AN IMPACT ON THE COLONIES EDUCATION THE COLLEGES MAIN PURPOSE WAS TO TRAIN MINISTERS BUT THE ENLIGHTENMENT OPENED UP EDUCATION FOR BEYOND THAT PURPOSE.
  • 9. TRIANGULAR TRADE • THE TRIANGULAR TRADE THEY TAKE SLAVES CAPTIVE AND HAVE CROPS AND TRADE THEM WITH PEOPLE AND SOME WOULD SELL THE SLAVES AND/OR HAVE THE SLAVES WORK FOR THEM
