2. The opening to this film trailer
features shots of each of the
main characters. The first shot
is an action shot of John
surfing, this shot emphasises
his physical strength and his
appealing appearance.
Savannah’s bag is knocked
into the sea and John plays the
hero and dives into the water
to save her bag. It is a
gentlemanly gesture which
results in their first meeting.
Snapshots of their blossoming
relationship then follow and
show how their love for each
other becomes stronger.
3. This is one of the scenes from the trailer. It is a mid shot
that is focused very much on the action between the two
characters as depth of field is also used to maintain that
focus as the background is blurred. This is ‘the kiss’ which
is a key element of the romance film genre.
4. The trailer continues to show the struggle the couple
face when John has to return to the army but goes on to
show how they keep in touch through writing each other
letters, this is where the film title comes from, and when
John returns they are reunited.
5. Throughout the trailer is the use of
instrumental music which is another key
feature of romance films. This is used in
conjunction with speech from the film itself
and the speech uses a sound bridge which
enables the image to change but the sound
from the previous image to continue, usually
because the two are linked.
6. This film trailer is different to the one for ‘The
Notebook’ because the actors names appear on
the screen rather than being read out by a
voiceover. The film title follows this in sync
with a sound bridge that continued from the
previous scene. The final image has
information from the film, including the
production company.
