Members of the Hoboken Police Department, Community Policing Bureau encourage all residents of the
City of Hoboken to take the following precautions to ensure their personal safety and to maintain the high
quality of life standard we are accustomed to.
• Stay alert and tuned in to your surroundings, wherever you are. Don't be taken by surprise. Be
aware and be prepared.
• Trust your instincts. If you feel uncomfortable in a place or situation, leave right away and get
help if necessary.
• Choose busy streets and avoid going through vacant lots, alleys, or other deserted areas. At
night, walk in well lighted areas whenever possible.
• Try not to walk or jog alone. Take a friend or neighbor along for company.
• Walk close to the curb. Avoid doorways, bushes and alleys.
• Know the neighborhoods where you live and work. Find out what stores and restaurants are
open late and where the police are located.
• Be careful when people stop you for directions. Always reply from a distance and never get too
close to the car.
• Avoid being preoccupied with cell phones, I-pods, etc. while walking City streets.
• Meet the Community Police Officer assigned to the area in which you live.
Call 9-1-1 for Help in an Emergency - Police, Fire or Medical
WHEN CALLING 9-1-1
• Stay Calm
• Speak slowly and clearly
• Give your name, location and nature of the emergency
• Listen carefully to the 9-1-1 operator
• Do exactly as the 9-1-1 operator says
• Do not hang up until the 9-1-1 operator tells you to
• No money is needed to dial 911 from a pay phone
• Never dial 91-1 for non-emergency situations
• For non-emergency, call the Hoboken Police at 201-420-2100
Taking these simple precautions will help keep your neighborhood a safe place to live and to
raise children. We, the members of the Hoboken Police strongly urge all residents to work with
us to maintain and to improve the quality of life in your neighborhood. If we work together, it is
possible to convince unwelcome visitors to keep out of your neighborhood.
