Mental Attitude: Those Who Expect to Be Lonely During Their Later Years… Individuals who believe old age is a time of
loneliness are twice as likely to report being lonesome later in life. Researcher Dr. Christina Victor writes, "It is highly significant to
discover this link between age stereotypes and the experience of loneliness, with all its accompanying quality of life, health, and social
problems." Aging & Mental Health. March 2015
Health Alert: Smoking and Alcohol Abuse Are Worldwide Problems! According to a new study, nearly 5% of the world’s adult
population has an alcohol-use disorder and more than 20% smokes tobacco. Obtaining data on the use of drugs such as heroin and
cannabis is much more difficult, but the number of people injecting drugs is estimated at around 15 million worldwide. Dr. Robert
West, the Editor-in-Chief of the journal Addiction writes, "The most striking thing to emerge is how much more damage is done to
society by legal drugs than illegal ones. It is a stark reminder of how the need to create shareholder value can work against global
health and wellbeing." Addiction, May 2015
Diet: Vitamin Supplement May Reduce Skin Cancer Risk. Nicotinamide, a form of vitamin B3, has been found to reduce non-
melanoma skin cancers by 23% when taken twice a day. The study also notes that nicotinamide reduced the numbers of thick, scaly
patches of skin on study participants that can possibly become cancer in the future. Benefits were seen as quickly as three months after
supplementation commenced, but those benefits were lost twelve months after participants ceased use. The findings suggest that a
daily vitamin pill, along with sun protection and regular skin cancer screenings, could be used as a skin cancer prevention plan.

Exercise: Pros and Cons of Smartphone Use & Exercise. If you want a better workout, you may want to leave your smartphone in
the locker and use a dedicated music device instead. Investigators found that when individuals use their smartphones during exercise
for texting or talking, it causes an overall reduction in exercise intensity and may reduce their cardiorespiratory fitness level. When
observing how individuals use their phones at the gym, researchers found that those who used their smartphone exclusively for
listening to music increased their average treadmill speed, heart rate, and enjoyment of exercise. Talking on the phone increased
enjoyment and maintained heart rate, but reduced running speed. Texting reduced both running speed and heart rate and failed to
increase enjoyment. Study contributor Dr. Michael Rebold writes, "These findings are important because poor cardiorespiratory
fitness is associated with an increased prevalence of cardiovascular disease risk factors, such as higher cholesterol and blood pressure
levels, which could potentially lead to premature mortality." PLOS ONE, May 2015
Chiropractic: Musculoskeletal Problems Extremely Common Among Physical Therapists! Survey responses obtained from 121
physical therapists (PTs) indicate that musculoskeletal complaints are highly common in the profession. In fact, 96% of those
questioned reported experiencing a musculoskeletal disorder during the previous year and 64% had complaints in at least three body
sites. Among affected areas of the body, the lower back and neck were the most prevalent. Disability and Rehabilitation, May 2015
Wellness/Prevention: Avoid Distractions While on the Road. Distracted driving can be extremely dangerous to not only you, but
also to your passengers, other drivers and their passengers, and pedestrians. To reduce your risk of becoming a distracted driver, the
Governors Highway Safety Association recommends turning off or silencing your cell phone and placing it out of reach, pulling over
if you need to make a call, never texting while driving, having a passenger text or place a call for you, securing pets while you drive,
pulling over to tend to children, staying focused on the road, and avoiding eating and drinking or any other activities that draw your
attention away from driving. Governors Highway Safety Association, May 2015
