BioSHaRE conference July 28th, 2015, Milan - Latest tools and services for data sharing Stream 1: Tools for data sharing analysis and enhancement Café Variome is a highly flexible data discovery platform suitable for use with genomic data and/or phenotype data in settings such as diagnostic networks, disease consortia, biobanks and research communities. It enables users to search for the existence rather than the substance of datasets, and as part of this offers a complete suite of data discovery capabilities, focused on the data rather than metadata. Following data discovery, the system also facilitates controlled data sharing. ‘Café Variome Central’ aims to consolidate all publicly available genetic variants into one discovery portal through which to announce, discover and acquire a comprehensive listing of observed neutral and disease-causing gene variants. It employs publicly available web services to gather and make searchable a set of pointers to records of interest, to help users discover the existence of variant data and direct them to the original data sources where the data may be examined in full. The software is in production as version 1.0 software, available presently for collaborative applications: http://www.cafevariome.org/ Café Variome can be installed stand-alone, or federated to allow searching across instances while the data remains at the source OmicsConnect, underpinned by an ‘extended DAS’ (eDAS) protocol for data transfer, enables data feed into a genome browser tool from diverse sources and controlling which users should have access to which data sources and which data slices in those datasets. DAS is a Extensible Markup Language (XML) communication protocol that allows a single client (e.g. a genome browser) to integrate information from multiple DAS servers dispersed around the world to present a unified view of data. The eDAS system brings many new advantages; the data are controlled by the content providers and can be modified, restricted and updated as required and the data are shared in a way that makes it easy for the end user to get information about specific regions, genes or markers without having to download and process entire datasets. The latest version of OmicsConnect is available for use under standard terms of academic collaboration: http://omicsconnect.org The tool is currently being improved for better adaptability and faster performance (fall 2015). Barbara Albee & Oliver Chen, Indiana University, School of Library and Information Science, Indianapolis The purpose of this project is to examine the implementation of an open source library automation system, Evergreen, in Indiana public libraries and its impact to library users. Nine public libraries from the Evergreen Indiana consortium are invited to participate in the project. The research team recruits library users at the nine libraries with the assistance from local librarians. The users are classified into three age groups: 18-24, 25-59 and 60 or above. The research team has collected data from the first two quarters in 2010 and reports preliminary results from the two quarters. Preliminary correlation-coefficient analyses indicate participants’ use of the library system’s functions are related to age, frequency of visits to local library in the last 12-months, level of use of the previous library system and the Evergreen system. Participants; use of the Evergreen system has potential to change the way they use library services and collections.

Web-scale Discovery Services are becoming an integral part of libraries' information gathering arsenal. These services are able to use a single interface to seamlessly integrate results from a wide range of online sources, emulating the experience patrons have come to expect from Internet search engines. But despite their ability to streamline searching, discovery services provide a wide set of challenges for libraries who implement them. This virtual conference will touch on both the potential of discovery services as well as some of the issues involved.

Web scale Discovery services are becoming the most sought after solution for Libraries to connect its patrons with the relevant information they seek. Many studies show that these services are getting wide acceptance from users as well as Library staff and making revolution in Library Information retrieval arena. Given such broad implications, selecting a new discovery service for libraries is an important undertaking. Library professionals should carefully evaluate options to meet their goal of finding the best potential match for their library. This Paper attempts to provide a comprehensive overview of Library Web Scale Discovery solutions by depicting various facets of Web Scale Discovery, how it differs from federated searching and highlights the important parameters to be considered for taking an informed and confident decision on selecting discovery service.

Abstract The impact of Internet and Google like search engines radically influenced the information behavior of Net Generation users. They expect same environment in library services such that all their required information make available in a single set of results through unified search across all the available resources. Libraries have been striving to respond to this challenge for years. Until recently, federated search technology of the past decade was the better attempt in this area to meet these user expectations. But federated search solution is marked by the drawbacks of its slowness as it searches each database on the fly. New Generation cloud based Library Web scale discovery technology is a promising entrant in this landscape. This Paper attempts to provide a comprehensive overview of Library Web Scale Discovery solutions by depicting various facets of Web Scale Discovery solutions such as its importance to Library field, their possible role as the starting point for research, content coverage, and finally analyses the competition at the discovery front by comparing the services of major players. The comparative analysis shows that all the major service providers are extending competitive features and services, but varies in some areas and the adoption choice depends on the concerned library’s preferences and the cost involved.

Accessibility compliance is a growing concern for academic institutions as it pertains to instructional materials on websites, course management systems, and in course documents. This extends to materials provided by academic libraries such as electronic resources. This presentation will discuss the approaches that both systems governing Tennessee public colleges and universities are using to ensure that vendors are compliant with standards as described in WCAG 2.0, EPUB 3, and Section 508 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973. The session will be divided into three parts as follows: Introduction to the difference between accessibility and accommodation. Discussion of the types of disabilities of which librarians should be aware when acquiring and assessing different electronic resources. Brief mention of the laws and standards related to accessibility compliance. An overview of the University of Tennessee System’s approach to encouraging accessibility compliance by incorporating detailed conformance language into licenses with the vendors and publishers of electronic and information technology. A discussion of the Tennessee Board of Regents system’s approach to encouraging accessibility compliance by conducting an accessibility audit of resources held in common among the system’s libraries and through a collaborative process of compliance document collection from vendors/publishers and sharing in an AIMT (Accessible Instructional Materials and Technology) database. An introduction to the different types of documents and their content: Accessibility Statement, Voluntary Product Accessibility Template (VPAT), WCAG 2.0 (Web Content Accessibility Guidelines) Checklist, EPUB 3 Accessibility Checklist, and a Conformance and Remediation Form. Stephanie J. Adams Electronic Resources Librarian, Tennessee Tech University Ms. Adams is the Electronic Resources Librarian at Tennessee Tech University where she is responsible for the acquisition and set-up of all electronic resources at the Volpe Library. Corey S. Halaychik The University of Tennessee, Knoxville Licensing guy, negotiator of master agreements at the University of Tennessee Libraries, and co-chair of The Collective, I work to make libraries more efficient, saving time and money for institutions and the people they serve. Jennifer Mezick Pellissippi State Community College Acquisitions and Collection Development Librarian at Pellissippi State Community College in Knoxville, TN. In addition to these roles, I manage the libraries' electronic resources and website, and provide instruction and research support to students and faculty.

Presentation in KohaCon2016, the major event of Koha community, on May 31, 2016. The Library & Information Center, University of Patras, Greece has developed the SELIDA framework, which integrates a set of standardized and widespread library technologies in order to increase the identification and traceability of physical items, such as books. The framework makes use of RFID tags in order to assign unique identification marks, in the form of URIs that can be globally exchanged. The framework has been implemented in the fully translated and customized Koha installation of our Library and its core services support checking in/out of books and browsing of history transactions with geospatial visualization. Its use can support transactions between various libraries or branches of the same library. The proposed presentation will describe the architecture of the framework and how it connects to Koha, as well as the challenges we faced during its development.

More than 100 people have been killed and 150,000 displaced by floods in Mozambique as southern Africa counts the human and economic costs of this month's torrential rains. The United Nations said last week the rains in early January had triggered floods affecting nearly one million people in Mozambique, Malawi, Madagascar and Zimbabwe. About a quarter of a million people in total were forced to leave their homes.

Librarians, researchers, and the general public have largely embraced the concept of open access (OA). Yet, incorporating OA resources into existing discovery and tracking systems is often a complicated process. Open access material can be delivered through a variety of publishing or archival mechanisms, creating certain challenges, particularly for those managing e-resources. Although an increasing proportion of research output is becoming open access each year, organization and discovery of these resources remains imperfect. The debate between the relative merits of Green and Gold OA is regularly discussed in academic circles but less attention is devoted towards Hybrid OA and the challenges inherent in this model. Most major publishers offer open access through one or more of these models, but open access metadata standards seem to be lacking among these content providers. The presenters will discuss some of these challenges identified in the literature and through other mechanisms, including data gathered by NISO and an original survey. By identifying these issues, the scholarly communication community can work together to improve discovery for end users. Chris Bulock Electronic Resources Librarian, SIUE Lovejoy Library Chris is an Electronic Resources Librarian and NASIG member from the St. Louis area. His research and work are focused on improving the library user's experience. Chris is the recipient of the 2012 HARRASSOWITZ Charleston Conference Scholarship. Nathan Hosburgh Discovery & Systems Librarian, Rollins College Nate Hosburgh is currently the Discovery & Systems Librarian at Rollins College in Winter Park, Florida as part of a revamped Collections & Systems department that includes ILL, collection development, acquisitions, systems, and technical services. Keynote Speaker: Matt Goldner, Executive Director, Cooperative Collection Services, OCLC Expanding Our Horizons: Reaching for the Limits[PowerPoint] The future of the library OPAC as a destination information portal is shaky at best. To surface library collections in today's information environment, libraries will have to move toward exposing themselves in multiple locations and through multiple methods. Looking at some of the successful ways OCLC has been able to surface the library's full capacity can give libraries one way to consider their futures.

Online libraries became essential source for both faculty and research members in order to obtain knowledge about different fields of sciences. Students all over the world are using for their researches the materials available on online libraries so that they can accomplish their tasks and day-to-day researches. An e-library database is used to store information according to its users. The documents stored in those database locations are called media where they are books and journals. The e-library must keep track of the status of each media item: its location, status, descriptive attributes, and cost for losses and late returns. Books will be identified by their ID. In order to allow multiple copies of the same book or journal, each media item will have a unique ID number. رويال كلاس للبحوث الأكاديمية والدراسات العليا Contact Us at: info@royalclassacd.com http://www.royalclassacd.com

The current financial situation has forced many libraries to pay unprecedented attention to how they are organized to achieve their missions. One common thread emerging in the responses is cooperation: those needing to cut costs sharply are finding that they cannot do so incrementally but must instead transform their activities in ways that spread cost and diffuse risk among many partners. The talk will cover some of the opportunities available for transformative institutional collaboration among libraries, including collaborative, open source software development as well as the challenges facing those attempting to collaborate. It will pay particular attention to the question of how to collaborate strategically: that is, how to ensure that collaboration retains or increases a library’s ability to pursue mission, enhance agility, increase sovereignty, and improve sustainability.

Libraries may have unique missions, but the way we accomplish them has a lot in common with many other businesses and institutions. This presentation will take a look what we can learn from bookstores, public radio, parks and recreation departments and other organizations that could help us reduce costs and improve revenues for libraries. And what could happen if we don’t.
