Question 3
1. What kind of media institution
might distribute your media
product and why?
Question 3
2. My product
My music magazine is aimed at 18-25 year olds, both female and male who have massive interest in music and
also enjoy socialising. It is aimed at the younger generation who have a classic and sophisticated taste in
music, unlike pop music. I chose this area of interest to base my magazine on as I believe there is a space in the
market for this type of music in the UK. I also carefully aimed it at young adults rather than teenagers because I
wanted my magazine to reflect appreciation of good music, quality and a taste for style. I carried this idea on
when designing the magazine as I kept to a classic house theme of red white and black and kept it fairly simple
yet sophisticated, rather than a variety of colours with lots of different fonts, making the magazine look cheap
and tacky. This is the reason I chose to follow conventions of Q who have a high reputation for quality
magazine who have features the worlds biggest artists like Oasis, Adele and Rihanna. They are the UK’s number
one purchased music magazine and are all about the quality and character, I believe I have included these
factors in my designs.
3. Publishers
Publishing is making information, literature or music available o
everyone (the public). There are many publishers in the UK and it
is a very competitive market. Media institutions only publish
magazines that they believe have a passionate interest in music,
or the genre that they may be publishing and that will attract the
target audience. Examples of UK publishers are Bauer, IPC
Media and Factory Media.
4. Distribution
As Bauer media would be my distributor, it is important to consider the stores
that my product would be promoted. Supermarkets like Tesco's, Asda and
Sainsbury's would be a definite location for my product, as many Bauer
magazines and other publishers sell their magazines there as they are
frequently shopped their by my target market, but also high street stores like
WHSmiths and newsagents would stock my product, making it accessible and
able to increase sales of my product. Aiming my magazine to be mass produced
means selling them at a lower price, making it appeal to my target audience
even more as they are young and cannot afford a highly priced product, some of
them may be students as well. Distribution companies look for the lower prices
as they know the product will defiantly appeal to the audience, increasing sales
and allowing the magazine sold to have more money when making more
editions of their magazine.
I will also look to make my product available on media products such as tables
through the internet, widening my audience and allowing my product to be
viewed easier and quicker than buying a paper copy. This will increase my
target audience’s interest as it allows them to be access to the magazine at all
5. Bauer Magazines
Q is a product of Bauer Magazines. Bauer Media is a division of
the Bauer Media Group. It is Europe’s largest privately owned
publishing Group who are a worldwide media empire offering
over 230 magazines in 15 countries, as well as online, TV and
radio stations. Bauer Media is also a sister company of H Bauer
Publishing, the UK's biggest TV listings publisher. Bauer publish
a variety of magazines from ‘heat’ the weekly celebrity must
have, ‘grazia’, for smart, modern who are interested in the top
trends for fashion and make up and ‘FHM’ the biggest men's
lifestyle media brand. Bauer do not publish a certain genre which
is why they are so popular.
6. BEAT and Bauer Magazines
Bauer is an institution that would distribute my magazine as it for
fills its quality need and features a big artist group, this therefore
attracts my audience. As a publishing company, it doesn’t go for
specific genres, therefore there are no restrictions when
publishing my magazine, unlike Factory Media, who are a
specialist sport media company and only distribute sporting
media products. This is something I would have to look at closely
when deciding a publisher and distributor as you need to make
sure they are attracted to your magazine and specify in that
genre or any genre that they might include. As I have followed
the conventions and ideas that Q have previously used in their
editions, I already know that there is a space in the market for a
product like Q and I have a target audience who would be
attracted to it.
