Le Bonheur De Vivre, By Henri Matisse
We can first look at what these paintings where all about. Le bonheur de vivre (The Joy of Life) is a
painting by Henri Matisse and together with the Picasso's Les Demoiselles d'Avignon, Le bonheur
de vivre is regarded as one of the pillars of early modernism . Modernism is the period of the 19th,
20th century period that was characterized by the culture trends changes and transformation.
Therefore the work of Le bonheur de vivre taken from the Baudelaire's poem, Invitation to a Voyage
(1857) depicts a man inviting her lover travel with him to a paradise. This painting shows nude
women in a "traditional classical idyll but one woman – thought to represent the painter's wife –
wears contemporary dress. This is Matisse's only major painting

Are the Classical Functions Put Forward by Henri Fayol in...
Academics for years have been pondering the effectiveness of classical approaches to newer
conceptualizations within management functions. Are the classical functions put forward by Henri
Fayol in 1949 still valid and true today?, or are the theories put forward by other academics such as
Mintzberg more valid?, or would the scientific type management concepts be more fitting?. To
answer such questions this report examines two Journal journals, "Are the classical management
functions useful in describing managerial work?" (Journal 1) and "Some effects of Fayolism"
(Journal 2). By analyzing the different arguments put forward, I aim to conclude which theory is
more appropriate to management study today.
In journal 1, Carroll and Gillen ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Non classical conceptualizations of managerial work (Mintzberg, Stewart etc.) help define the
nature of managerial work. However Fayol's classical approach best conceptualizes management
functions and a manager's job, so it is the best source to be used for educational purposes.
Journal 2 addresses two perspectives of management to evaluate the concepts of management
fashion and its management recommendations. There is a logical supposition that organizations
must strive to be unique in their business operations to have a fair chance of success, within
competition. However the idea of management states presumes resemblance in all businesses, which
calls for the profession of 'managers' to exist (Brunsson, 2008 pp33). This journal also recognizes
the merit of Fayol's theory in molding Management conceptualization. Furthermore recognizes the
success of management recommendations listed by other theorists such as Mintzberg and Kotter,
who refer to Fayol's functions to a respected degree. However the journal does not recognize any
relationship between Fayol's functions and organizational performance. Brunsson refers to Fredrick
Taylor's 'bottom–up' view to address this issue. Discussing managements recommendations in terms
of fashions imply; "dissatisfaction with the existing recommendations, and ambition to improve

Principles Of Henri Fayol
In the early 1900s, large organizations were finding that they needed to be managed too. At the time
little management models and procedures were in place until scientists like Henri Fayol came along
and paved the way. Henri was born in 1841 and his first concepts in principles of management are
the underlying factors for successful management. Henri Fayol, a French coal mine director, is most
notably known for his contributions to the five main functions of management that are described in
detail in his book entitled "Administration Industrielle et Generale" (Norma, n.d.). Henri Fayol's
management idea is that there are 14 principles of management that can be drilled down into five
components that should be used to control and plan production. Fayol's ideas were introduced into
textbooks in the 1950's and since then the five main points have been drilled down, by other authors,
to four main components of management. Those four main points are planning, organizing, leading,
and controlling, which is also called the P.O.L.C. process. Staffing was removed as a main function
in management. One of the most important steps in managing a business is planning, which is also
the first step in the P.O.L.C. process. Planning is one of the most vital tools you will need to use in
business. From starting your own business to growing into an empire you will plan the entire way.
As a business grows you will need to map out the new path the company will take. For

Gantt Chart
Henry Gantt's legacy to production management is the following: * The Gantt chart: Still accepted
as an important management tool today, it provides a graphic schedule for the planning and
controlling of work, and recording progress towards stages of a project. The chart has a modern
variation, Program Evaluation and Review Technique (PERT). * Industrial Efficiency: Industrial
efficiency can only be produced by the application of scientific analysis to all aspects of the work in
progress. The industrial management role is to improve the system by eliminating chance and
accidents.[6] * The Task And Bonus System: He linked the bonus paid to managers to how well they
taught their employees to improve performance. * The social ... Show more content on

Each row of the chart corresponds to an individual machine or operator. These charts do not indicate
which tasks were to be done, however.
A novel method of displaying interdependencies of processes to increase visibility of production
schedules was invented in 1896 by Karol Adamiecki, which was similar to the one defined by Gantt
in 1903. However, Adamiecki did not publish his works in a language popular in the West; hence
Gantt was able to popularize a similar method, which he developed around the years 1910–1915,
and the solution became attributed to Gantt. With minor modifications, what originated as the
Adamiecki's chart is now more commonly referred to as the Gantt Chart.[11][12]
Gantt Chart
A Gantt chart is a type of bar chart, developed by Henry Gantt in the 1910s, that illustrates a project
schedule. Gantt charts illustrate the start and finish dates of the terminal elements and summary
elements of a project. Terminal elements and summary elements comprise the work breakdown
structure of the project. Some Gantt charts also show the dependency (i.e. precedence network)
relationships between activities. Gantt charts can be used to show current schedule status using
percent–complete shadings and a vertical "TODAY" line as shown here.

The first known tool of this type was developed in 1896 by Karol Adamiecki, who called it a
harmonogram. Adamiecki published his chart in 1931, however, only in Polish, which limited both

Analysis Of Le Cafe De Nuit
Le Café de Nuit by Vincent van Gogh is possibly one of Van Gogh's most famous paintings, located
at the Yale Art Gallery in New Haven, CT. It stands at 28 1/2 inches tall and has a width of 36 1/4
inches, and for being nearly 130 years old this piece is extremely well preserved. This is an oil
painting done on canvas circa 1888, that depicts the Café de l'Alcazar, a place where van Gogh often
ate his meals, and watched as the walls of this building slowly filled with prostitutes and vagrants
each night. In a letter to his brother, the night café was vibrantly explained for exactly what is seen
now on the canvas. The strong linear pattern in this painting is directly related to the one–point
perspective used in crafting the room and the furniture in it. The floor boards are the strongest
representation of the linear pattern, pushing the viewers eye diagonally back from the negative space
in the bottom left corner, to lively back wall of the room that is cluttered with a bar, an open door,
and fellow civilians sitting at a table. Other objects like the pool table in the middle of the room,
assorted side tables and the paneling on the walls also helps to guide the eye in the same way. The
inherent nature of this line pattern is to create a sense of depth in the room and a sense of space
across the entirety of the picture plane. The rhythm of the objects in the room follow a mostly
mellow, legato pattern with some staccato characteristics. A legato rhythm is found in the

Analysis Of Faith And Doubt At Ground Zero
In the documentary "Faith and Doubt at Ground Zero," a number of people were interviewed about
how their religious beliefs or non beliefs, were challenged since the events of September 11th. The
interviews with priests, rabbis, family members of victims, survivors, lay people, atheists and
agnostics, this documentary explores how Americans' spiritual lives may have changed since the
event. When a tragic event happens, people would either grow closer to god or outgrow god. To
those people who do not believe in a god, these actions will just prove their beliefs. In the beginning
of the film, people immediately started to question God. Some of them started to question why
would a god so mighty approve this kind of actions. Dr. Michael Brescia, who is a physician who
saw pictures of people jumping off the building, "I wonder how many of them thought if there was a
God. And if there was a God, why me? Why this? And where am I going to go?" This kind of
questions always come up when something catastrophic happens. Others, however, did not ask any
questions and just accepted what has happened. Kim Coleman, who lost her daughter said, "God
knows something I don't, God knows best and knows better than we do." There were also a couple
of people who were not so sure what to think of god anymore. Rev. Joseph Griesedieck, a priest who
volunteered at Ground Zero said, "the face of God was a blank slate for me. God couldn't be counted

Compare And Contrast Frederick Winslow Taylor And Henri Fayol
Introduction
The purpose of this academic essay is to compare and contrast two management theorists in their
individual fields of work and further more discuss how these theorists made contributions to the
field of management. The author of this academic essay plans to use parameters to discuss their
findings through books, journal articles and credible online resources. The theorists the author plans
to discuss are Frederick Winslow Taylor and Henri Fayol.
The term, "Management", can be defined as, "the control or organising of something", (Cambridge
University Press, 2015). This means the way in which, in this case in business terms is the method
in which a company or any other business organisation, is managed and run on a daily basis. ...

What sets Fayol out from other theorists involved in management was the fact that he wasn't
American like previous theorists such as Taylor but was in fact French. He worked independently
during the time when scientific management became known to the world. Originally he was a
mining engineer and it was from this that he came to realise that managing a business required a lot
of skills apart from technical (Morley, 2013). In 1916 he wrote, "Administration Industrielle et
Generale", which was later translated and published in English as, "General and Industrial
Management", (Morley, 2013). This publication established him as a leader in European
/management in the 1900's according to, (Morley,

While Modern Film Productions Have Lost The Ambitious...
While modern film productions have lost the ambitious classicism of early cinema, the idea to view
cinematography itself as a self–governing construction of thinking has been carved into the history
of continental philosophy. Due to the variety of material and conjecture, film manipulates the four–
dimensional reality in which we live our everyday lives in. From A quoi pensent les films?, Jacques
Aumont, a French academic writer on film theory, states that "film has the power of thinking" in
order to express that the art form has the ability to release us from the restriction of our realistic
judgements and radical perceptions, producing a poetic and dreamlike reality.
Film philosophers that were specifically intrigued in the mechanics of ... Show more content on

Henri Bergson, a French philosopher, declines this model theory by communicating that the
cinematic adventure actively perceive time and movement all in one platform, his philosophy was
the variance of material and spiritual actuality. In a counter exploration of Benjamin 's ideals, when
one looks at a clock they view purely different placements and positions of the clocks hands, but this
act entails no specific spiritual connection to the viewer. The same logic of this situation compares
to the example from Benjamin's. Only the single audience's encounter can determine the product.
Exploring this theory, French philosopher Deleuze, who wrote on the philosophy of literature, film,
and fine art, counters Benjamin's statement arguing that our mind does not need to put together the
arbitrary components that is required to construct a piece but rather we can receive the information
as a whole. In his two most popular books on cinema, Deleuze argues that because of "Image–
Mouvement" (Cinéma I) and "Image–Temps" (Cinéma II), Deleuze moves to say films do not think
with plain set images like paintings, which produce no mechanics to personify thought, but with
"movement–images" and "time–images." Movement–images are explained as a scene of action the
creates a reaction, producing the cycle of similar scenes. Time–images are defined by Deleuze as a
scene that is created entirely on thought. Not only do these two components provide the audience

One Of The Four Functions Of Management By Henri Fayol...
One of the four functions of management by Henri Fayol is leading. Leadership refers to the process
of influencing a group to achieve goals. (Robbins, Bergman, Stagg& Coulter). Being one of the four
management functions by Henri Fayol, leading can be both extremely important and challenging.
Successful leaders have to perform planning, organizing and controlling for the productivity of a
company and to implement the four functions of management. (Hunter, E. M., Neubert, M. J., Perry,

Mari Carmen Ramirez states that "Art exhibitions are privileged vehicles for the representation of
individual and collective identities, whether they consciously set out to be so or not". The most
important part of that quote is the latter part, "whether they consciously set out to be so or not".
Whether or not the Museum of Modern Art was attempting to create, or even join the ongoing
narrative about the art of Latin America when they created their survey exhibition, they indeed did.
And Wifredo Lam, and his artwork The Jungle were included in that narrative.

background of sugar cane identifies the setting as a Cuban sugarcane field, opening the aware
viewer's eyes to the political commentary the piece possess. The image, however confusing and
chaotic, is aimed to address the history of slavery in colonial Cuba, an issue Lam addresses in many
of his works. The Jungle was part of an extremely large show held at the Museum of Modern Art in
New York city from June to September in 1993. The Museum of Modern art acquired the piece soon
after it was created. The show was named Latin American Artists of the Twentieth Century, and was
deemed "the most extensive survey of modern Latin American art ever assembled". The goal of the
show, as stated in the exhibition press release, was to "highlight the significant international
contribution made by ...artists from throughout the Americas". An extremely honorable goal. This
whole idea fits perfectly into the discussion about museums and galleries showing Latin American

How The Ghana Is Influenced By African Art
In this assignment we look at how the Benin is able to concept the uncivilised nature of African
societies. We will also look at the relationship between the Benin Bronzes, as African art, rather than
modern art in the west. We know that the Benin bronzes are known to be of 'aesthetic', 'spiritual' and
'sentimental' value due to its symbolic appraisal of civilisation. They are also one of the most
sophisticated pieces of art.
When looking into the African heritage, we can note it has a vast impact on the modern art world –
artists such as Pablo Picasso, Henri Matisse sustain this. Artists in the 1920's and 30's were known to

(1971). Ruskin believes that the lexis 'art' is retained for European and Christian traditions. We
know that 'fine art' is a representation of pre recovery tradition within Europe as paintings were able
to give off the depiction illusion of objects/ people in reasoned environments. Although, the Benin
Bronze is able to become symbolic of idolised bodies, Western Societies did not see this as 'art', due
to its 'primitive' nature.
The Benin Bronze is seen to give off the illusion of life–like through the academic modelling of:
light and shadow gradations upon features around the eyes, mouth and ears, the smooth finishes
upon the softer areas such as the lips and rounded forms in spaces such as the chin and inner eyes.
Rather than depicting emotions, the Benin bronze is able to use distorted forms to express them
through emphasises on certain areas of the artefact such as the fine detail within the headpiece and
neck. The Benin bronze is also able to give the illusionistic imitation of feelings, such as: worship,
dread and concern – depending on how the viewer deceives it. It is known that the idea of forming
and feeling emotion within art, was central to the late nineteenth century – The historic impact of
this is indisputable.
The artwork of the Benin Bronzes were seen transported to anthropological museums in Germany,
France, England and other nations following the imperialism at the end of the nineteenth century.

explicably stated, supporting the views of leadership as outlined by management pioneer Mary
Follett (Gibson et al. 2013) where knowledge and expertise should determine who leads at any
particular moment, not who sits where in the organisational structure.
Mary Follett is best known for creating and implementing a management style where employees
were encouraged to have more responsibility in their working environment (Gibson et al. 2013).
Follett's revolutionary management theory placed a strong significance on group dynamics (Gibson
et al. 2013) where the authoritarian power is fluid and should flow to the person who can best help
the organisation achieve its goals (Waddell, Jones & George 2013, p.7) instead of whoever holds the
highest rung in the hierarchy. Follett's system suggests that if employees had a sufficient
understanding and had adequate skills, the workers instead of the managers would take control and
the managers would take on a facilitator's role coaching and motivating the workers where necessary
(Waddell, Jones & George 2013, p.7). Her reasoning behind this system was that she often saw
managers underestimate the value of their employees no matter whether it was their knowledge,
skill set or experience (Gibson et al. 2013).

It is critical to understand what positions you will need in your organization in the year to come.
While you cannot predict all of your needs, a staffing forecast can help you in proper planning for
organizational growth.
Once you have outlined the positions you will need to fill then you will need a targeted recruiting
plan which includes identifying responsibilities, knowledge, skills, core competencies and cultural
fit for your ideal employee. Use creative recruiting sources to target that individual including social
media as an outlet to find top talent. An interview process that allows you the company and the
candidate to learn as much about each other is important to making sure it is a good fit.
Training & Development: Your employees are your greatest asset. Continual development of your

Black Soldiers In The Haitian Revolution
The enslaved Africans of Saint Domingue had an unwavering desire for freedom. They burnt cane
fields and refineries in order to destroy the system that had held them captive. John K. Thornton
believes that the contribution of African soldiers was the main reason for the success of the Haitian
Revolution. In his article, "African Soldiers in the Haitian Revolution", he noted that, 'the rebellious
slaves of Haiti inflicted grievous military defeat on all who opposed them.' The majority of the
enslaved persons in Saint–Domingue were not simply just agricultural workers, but from whence
they came, they were soldiers, merchants and even kings. The African–born enslaved persons, who
made up the majority of the masses, were able to use their prior military experience to assist them in
their victory and some even participated in the Congolese wars. They were skilled in Guerilla
Warfare which they used to defeat all the forces which they fought. Thornton noted, from an eye–
witness' account, that when the ex–enslaved persons engaged in battle 'they never massed in the
open or waited in line to charge.' And these tactics 'made them appear to be six times as numerous'
than they were. Thornton stated that if persons view the enslaved people of Haiti as people with
strong militaristic backgrounds and not just agricultural labourers, the question as to what was the
main reason for the success of Haitian Revolution may be answered.
Throughout the revolution there was an abundance of

Henri Fayol:
Management Principals through Experience
Introduction
While the subject of management has proven a popular topic, especially during the last 25 years, the
subject is certainly not exclusive to latter part of the 20th century (Donkin, 1998). Henri Fayol, a
turn–of–the–century French mining engineer and eventual management executive is often credited
with becoming one of the first to develop and write about the now popular topic.
"Dubbed the father of modern operational–management theory" (Long, 1997, p.31), Fayol's ideas
and theories on management are founded in his practical 49 years of experience working in the
mining and steel industry. However, Fayol was quick to point out that his theories were not confined

These powerful industries led to the formation of trade unions, which were becoming more and
more influential. And yet, while the rate of earnings for companies was slowing, the cost of living
had remained relatively constant, leading to a moderate level of economic prosperity.
Fayol believed that while the industrial, political, and social tides were changing, a strong
administrative regime was necessary to provide stability. At the same time Fayol believed that
"many of the authoritarian elements of nineteenth–century industrial paternalism" (Reid, 1995) were
no longer necessary with the rise of unionism.
Putting his thoughts into action in accordance with his beliefs as well as in accordance with the
changes in the power bases, Fayol promoted policies that were worker–friendly. Despite the fact that
during this period the concept of the "company controlled town," prevailed and was heavily
entrenched in the French mining industry, Fayol implemented changes in policy by which his
company would no longer monitor church attendance or set up "company stores" where existing
businesses were already established to serve the needs of the local population (Reid, 1995). Small
changes like these were a major departure from business control of every aspect of employee life,
both professional and private.

Fayols 14 Principles
HOW FAYOL 'S 14 PRINCIPLES OF MANAGEMENT
ARE USED IN A MILITARY ENVIRONMENT
By
Mark Culligan
"The process of coordinating and integrating work activities so that they are completed efficiently
and effectively with and through other people".
(Henri Fayol "General and Industrial Management."(1916))
Introduction
Management is a very complex field. Not only must managers pay attention to what is best for the
organization, but they also have to do what is best for their customers. At the same time, the
manager must satisfy the need of their employees. Henri Fayol developed fourteen principles of
management in 1916 that organisations are recommended to apply to order to run properly. This
paper will show how some of Fayols ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
· Initiative. The army is a very good organisation for allowing its personnel to use their initiative. All
soldiers are told and trained to use their initiative, as this is one of the qualities their superiors are
looking for when considering a person for promotion and career progression.
· Espirit de Corps. Harmony among soldiers and teamwork are a major factor of a soldier, each one
feels and participates as a team and are very good at " watching each others back".
"One 's only rival is one 's own potentialities. One 's only failure is failing to live up to one 's own
possibilities. In this sense every man can be a king and must therefore be treated like a king".4
Conclusion
Most successful organisations in recent times have some if not all of Fayol 's fourteen principles, for
example; in the 1920 's Alfred P.Sloan the executive head of general motors reorganised the
company into semi–autonomous divisions, corporations undergoing reorganisation still apply
"classical organisation" principles – very much in line with Fayol 's recommendations.5

Compare And Contrast Max Weber And Fayol
In this essay, I have chosen to discuss how Max Weber (1864–1920) and Henri Fayol (1841–1925)
compare and contrast in their ideology and contributions to the field of management. Max Weber
focused on how to structure an organisation to become successful. He developed six main elements
to promote this success, which he considered would develop efficiency. He called it bureaucracy.
Bureaucracy has its advantages and disadvantages, it was considered to be "both rational and
efficient" (Tiernan, Morley, 2013, p. 17), but for example Weber's rather strict division of labour
also led to workers becoming bored and unmotivated. The six elements that he created were;
Division of labour, Hierarchy, Selection, Career orientation, Formalisation and Impersonality. ...

The two have been compared and contrasted above throughout and from that we can deduce they
exclude the concept of the external environment effecting an organisation, which is not the case.
This is why there is no one theorist with the complete solution to success in an organisation, but
both of these men have hugely affected the work place for everyone since their work has been
recognised. They agree upon the importance of the division of labour, the idea of a hierarchy and
rules within an organisation. In contrast to this they handle such matters as equity and impersonality,
which are similar concepts, very differently as stated. Fayol was more personal than Weber; he
embraced team work and initiative in employees. These points I have brought up show a clear
comparison yet slight contrast between the theorists, and I have shown this throughout as to how
they have contributed in the field of

thesis correct that they are still relevant. Throughout, I will remain on topic by identifying the pros

Further, the manager must be held accountable for ensuring his commands are followed through.
The potential negative side exists if her subordinates lose trust in her directives, either as a result of
leadership failure (real or perceived), or from making consistently wrong decisions.
Discipline: Every significant corporation assumes disciplinary measures for unethical behavior or
insubordination. Without rules and consequence, chaos would ensue. It positively illuminates
conduct management expects from their subordinates by clearly defining the repercussions for non–
compliance. However, if the fear of discipline creates a culture of fear, it has the capacity to severely
hinder an employee's willingness to take appropriate risks. Discipline needs be in meticulous
alignment with the behavior it serves to reinforce without stifling creativity.
Unity of Command: This remains a poignant principle in many businesses today. The positive
attribution to applying this leadership principle, is it ensures the clarity of employee expectations
and directive intention. Too many direct reports can introduce unnecessary confusion and conflict.
However it may not be possible to apply to all business relationships, such as if the employee's

The manager also comprises features such as an entrepreneur, a disturbance handler and negotiator.
(Brooks, 2009 and

In contrast to Fayol he found that managers actually spend "very little time on solitary tasks"
(Brooks, 2009, p. 161) but had to deal with constant interruptions in the form of calls or mails from

nine minutes and only ten per cent exceeded one hour. (Mintzberg, 1975) On these grounds he
suggests that a manager is "simply responding to the pressures of his job".
(Mintzberg, 1975, p. 225)

Mintzberg (1975) states, that the effectiveness of a manger is highly dependent on his insights into
his work. Thus a manager's performance is influenced by his understanding and responding to the
'pressures' of the job. Pryor and Taneja (2010), however, argue that if

Essay on The Artwork of Henry Matisse
Matisse once said, "A good art work should be like an arm chair in which you could relax at the end
of the day". This statement of Matisse's indicates that artist's artwork should be an art of balance, of
purity and tranquillity devoid of troubling or depressing subject matter. An art which is created for
everyone in society and that is like a pacifying influence, something like a good arm chair in which
you could rest from physical fatigue. Moreover, his paintings are about imagination, dreams and
about the nature itself. Matisse's Fauvist paintings "Large Red interior" and "Open Window
Collioure" are great examples of Matisse's attitude and response to the world around him. The
artworks reflect the theories of Fauvists, revealing ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The division of the canvas into patches of pure unmixed, warm and strident colour positioned in
powerful contrasts with each other, translating the emotions of Matisse. This creates a balance in the
artwork by applying equilibrium of colours on both of the sides of the canvas. Primitively, this was
the way of Fauvists expressing their emotions, through the use of vibrant colours and compositions.
In this way we can see that Matisse artwork is an art of balance which avoids the depressing subject
matter. Henri Matisse further explores the Fauvists ideas in his art work, through the use of the lines
and shapes. The lines and shapes play a significant role in the work and the lines work together to
establish balance. The balance of lines and shapes is achieved through the geometric and organic
shapes. The painting 'Open window, Collioure' is typically simplified into shapes and forms whose
details are conveyed by untouched brush strokes of roughly the same size. This creates an overall
harmony that is unexpected in a composition of such incompatible and dramatic complementary
colours. Furthermore, the key to his success in using such intense colours was the realization that he
had to simplify his drawing. Matisse was aware that if he intensified the colours for the expressive
effect, it would be necessary to reduce the amount of detail used in drawing shapes and lines of the
objects. Moreover, by applying the same type of

"The Challenge of Love"
Some of the biggest challenges in relationships are rooted between the push and pull of give and
take. People tend to enter into relationships to gain something: they 're trying to find someone who 's
going to make them feel good. In reality, the only way love is true is if the relationship comes from a
place of giving.
For some love is primarily taking, for some love is primarily giving and for some it is more evenly a
matter of "give & take". A person driven by intense need often attempts to control the relationship,
taking to fulfill their personal needs. When the emphasis is on taking, love becomes very
threatening. Love takes on many forms, but true love is not one of power and control.

That said, in time when love failed his grand daughter Janine, Louis "although inexpert in the
gestures of love" (p.267) supported Janine in managing her own feelings of pain, betrayal, and
abandonment after her marriage ended.
Janine was able to see an honesty and openness in Lois that at times he didn't see in himself. Her
ability to see Louis for the man he was and not his actions was a demonstration of her true love and
devotion to him. Janine was acutely aware that her grand father was "a terrible, even at times a
dreadful man" (p.280) but she was able to accept him and his personal truth, without judgement. It
was Louis's influence alone in the end that "entirely changed her way of looking at things" (p. 280).
To Janine, her grand father was not man of power and control, but a man "weighed down by a sense
of unworthiness" (p.279), and for that she felt sad a partly responsible. Louis was a man who needed
truth, to feel worthy, loved, and to be free, something he was not able to be around his family – his
wife Isa and two children. In the end Louis experienced love through Janine.
True to form through the last section of the book Louis aims criticism at Janine. To Louis his grand
daughter was "weak" (p. 254), she was "a women incapable of receiving anything from another
person" (p. 265), a person who "thought so little" (p. 256) about others. These qualities connected
the two, as Louis was much the same. Louis a

Personal Essay : The Story Of A Man's Life
The sound of a man's breath filled the vast and murky space, a silhouette could be seen. His arms
and legs were suspended in the air by spider–like webs, as his body lazily leaned forward. Slowly a
small light shined in the man's face. Hesitantly, he opened his eyes, blinking rapidly trying to adjust
his eyes to the foreign light. The light then left his face and moved forward shining towards a
building that was in front of the man. Lights turned on instantly making figures slowly appear in
each window. There were three floors in the building, the first floor had a set of three large
windows. The window on the right side had a family watching television, laughing on cue with the
jokes. They held each other close as their bright smiles ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

"Welcome ladies and gentleman!" a loud voice boomed, "Welcome to the greatest show in The Twin
Vale!" The lights then stopped on the roof of the building. At the top was a woman that wore a
tattered and a dirtied face. Blood ruined the end of her dress and her hair was painted with a similar
shade of red. Her arms were tied back and tears streamed down her face. Her body was also tied to a
series of strings forcing her to move towards the edge. "Welcome to the show," the voice said as the
woman took another step forward with tears, "of instant death" The woman struggling to halt her
movements cried,"Please help!" The captive man forced his arms and legs to move, only to be
pushed back by his strings. The voice laughed, the sound of drums and trumpets grew louder as the
man fought to set his limbs free. The farther the woman walked, the more the music grew.
"Try all you want little bird, but your impurities hold you back," The voice yells,"It is your fault the
woman will fall! Try all you want! Your lies will never set you free.".
Suddenly the people in the windows revealed themselves to the man. The men in every window had
been him, except for the first. The family had been him when he was a child. The memories came
flooding in like a hurricane. Fear, anger, love, hate, and pain. He felt all these emotions as he tried to

Scientific Management & Frederick Taylor Essay
Scientific management is defined by (Robbins et al., 2012) as 'an approach that involves using
scientific methods to define the "one best way" for a job to be done'. Frederick W. Taylor is said to
be the forefather of scientific management, during his time many people criticised Taylor and his
work, however it is easy to see that many of his approaches are used in contemporary management
systems. This essay will provide a review of the article 'The Ideas of Frederick W. Taylor', Academy
of Management Review (Locke, E., 1982) which discusses the positives and negatives of Taylor's
theory. A further 3 articles will be analysed on the critiquing or support of scientific management

Locke (1982) also articulates Taylor's major criticisms in his journal article; degradation of the
worker, loss of complete skills, authoritarianism or dictatorship power given to management,
exploitation of workers and dishonesty. Locke concludes his article stating that even though it has
been 65 years since Taylor's death and many more theorists of business management have risen and
fallen, Frederick W. Taylor's research and findings are still used in today's business systems (1982,
p.22).
Over the years many articles have been written regarding scientific management and Frederick w.
Taylor, 3 examples of these articles will be analysed and discussed in the further paragraphs of this
essay. Wrege, C. D. and Stotka, A. M. wrote an article concerning the relationship between Taylor
and his assistant Morris L. Cooke and the evidence that shows Taylor used much of Cooke's own
research and study for his publication of 'Principles of Scientific Management'. Blake A. M. and
Moseley J. L. undertook research which discovered that Taylor's principles are still being used in
business systems one hundred years after Taylor's death. Darmody, Peter B. wrote his article
regarding Henry L. Gantt and Frederick Taylor as the pioneers of scientific management, Darmody
speaks highly of Taylor and Gantt, and agrees with many of their opinions.

ultimately comparing and contrasting the world of management in US organisations from early
1900's to now. However the result of each of his discussions fall in the same favour each time,

Journal of Management History, vol. 16, no. 4, pp. 489–503.
The purpose of this paper by Pryor & Taneja (2010) is to illustrate through examining
contemporary management and management theories how Fayol's contribution of his principles and
model theory is relevant in management today.
This is done by a process of researching and examining the work of major academics (e.g.
Mintzberg (1989), Porter (1985), Taylor (1947), Kotter (1982), & Berdaves (2002)) Pryor and
Taneja (2010) compare the works and ideas of both Fayol and these authors to find the similarities
and differences between their theories.
A limitation of this article may be the large focus of similarities between studies, paying rare
attention to the differences between Fayol and the given management theorist. Future studies on this
issue should be undertaken in an argumentative manner, given equivalent attention to both aspects
of the argument. Indeed; this article supports the conclusions of similar studies (e.g. Rodrigues,
2001. Archer, 1990. Fells, 2000) that Fayol's theory is relevant today, and that his 5 management
functions are evident in all organisations (Hales 1986). Another shared conclusion between journals
is that Fayol's work sets the foundations of management practise and theory today. Even though
Mintzberg (1973) argues differently, his theory "tends to

ABSTRACT One of the major problems facing secondary school administration in Nigeria has been
the absence of appropriate and efficient guidelines for effective management. Some of the
administrative management strategies have been based on a variety factors. While some have be
based on set goals with no adequate information, others have been characterized by a high level of
ignorance of administrative processes on the part of the administrators. The falling standard in
education in the country is partly attributable to this poor administration of the secondary schools
due to lack of specialized personnel with in–depth administrative strategies. This study is therefore
aimed at addressing the deficiencies in the administrative process in the secondary schools through
the application of the Henri Fayol's managerial principles in the management of the secondary
schools. A structured questionnaire was designed with the fourteen principles on which the opinion
of the secondary schools stakeholders (Principals, Teachers, PTA and Educational Inspectors) was
solicited. The tested instrument was then administered to a total of 3732 respondents selected
through a stratified random sampling procedure across the six geopolitical

The Breakfast Club Analysis
The film The Breakfast Club (1985) by John Hughes is just one story of the many that were
popularized by the teen movie craze of the 1980's. The comedy follows five high school–aged
adolescents as they navigate their way through a day of Saturday detention that is not only atypical
but rather an experience which ends up changing the whole perspective on the lives that they have
been living. What sets this film apart from other popular high school movies of the time such Fast
Times at Ridgemont High and Ferris Bueller's Day Off is that the teens portrayed in the film are
neither sexualized or over the top, but rather a fairly accurate portrayal of the average American teen
at the time. Every character, who each represent a different subculture of the American adolescent,
has a deepness and complexity which are heightened by the individual stories they tell. Layers of
each teen's personality are slowly stripped away over the course of the movie until they all come to
realize that they all share the same basic problems, they all have the same basic wants and needs,
and, most importantly, they are all human. A good portion of the film can be related to the ideas
explored by Michel Foucault in his Panopticism, specifically when referring to the role which the
school system plays in influencing the children's social inequality and how it modifies their behavior
in general. Additionally, there are a great number of similarities which can be drawn between the

organization, and last control everything. In few words he was the only main head of the
organization. It does not mean that he was alone but in compare with the present most of the
organizations operate with the bureaucratic structure of Max Weber's theory that "organizations are
managed on an impersonal, rational authority basis and they are not depend on to a particular person
who may leave or die"(Weber, 1997, p.45). Today all the organizations have been divided in many
departments and all these departments with the help of the assistant managers have been undertake
by one Fayol's element. These departments make all the work and then introduce their work to the
manager. So the only thing that managers have to do is consider ready information and reports that
the units of the organization have done, and then just take a decision. And this is what exactly
Mintzberg observes in his research. As a fact that Fayol's elements are widely used not exactly by
the managers but rather from the whole organization. "Luthans and others believe that

Henri Fayol 's Influence On Business Management Essay
Henri Fayol is a founder of modern management and he influenced business management in a
significant degree. Fayol is one of the three classical theorists, along with Max Weber who came up
with the Authority and Bureaucracy theory and F W Taylor who came up with Scientific
Management. Henri Fayol (1841– 1935) started off as a coal–mining engineer at a large mining
company in France when he was at age nineteen. Eventually Fayol became a Managing director in
that mining company and hired around a thousands of employees. Fayol spent a total of thirty years
at the company. After that, he devoted his life to management and this is when he introduced his
theories to the world. Fayol were among the first to introduce management education to the world.
He believes management needs improvement and it could be taught so he designed the principles as
a guideline. He wrote a book about his perspectives of management in his book "Administration
Industrielle et GeÂneÂrale" which was published in French in 1916. (Fells, 2000, p.345) This book
outlines his perspective and principles on effective management in organization and is based on his
own experiences as a managerial leader in a large company. His five functions of management and
fourteen principles of management were discussed in the book, which are still relevant and are
widely used in numerous companies in today's business world.

Henri Fayol was born in 1841 into a French middle class family. Graduating from the National
School of Mines at the age of 19 as a mining engineer, he started out his career at Commentry
Fourchamboult Company where he remained throughout his working life. Progressing into general
management during his early thirties he later became Managing Director, instigating the company's
rise from being on the verge of bankruptcy to becoming one of the leading steel producers and
mining operators. He wrote many technical papers on mining engineering and the geology of coal
fields, later turning his focus to general administration, publishing Administration Industrielle et

This can be seconded by empirical support from other theorists such as Rosemary Stewart who
conducted a study of 160 British middle and top managers and found that they worked for half an
hour or more without interruption around once every two days (Stewart 1967).
Subsequently Mintzberg believing the reality of management to be vastly different from the true
image went on to offer his own description of what 'to manage' entails. This comprised of 10 roles
which can be split into 3 subsections. Mintzberg (1975) "Formal authority gives rise to the three
interpersonal roles, which in turn give rise to the three informational roles; these two sets of roles
enable the manager to play the four decisional roles". Although Mintzberg's attempt to reform the
views on management was successful in stirring other theorists to conduct studies in the area, he can
be criticised for the language he used not being explicit enough and although he has empirical
evidence to support his discovery of how managers behave, it does not imply this is the way
managers should behave as this view of management behaviour may not be that of an effective
manager?

Fayol's “Principles” in a University Library
In reading through Management Basics for Information Professionals by Evans and Ward, one of the
theories of management that stood out to me was the "administrative approach" (2007). Henry Fayol
was one of the main proponents of this approach, though there were many others as well. Fayol
"divided organizational activities into five major groups" and also identified 14 principles of
management and believed that "management is a skill one can learn, rather than a talent received at
birth" (Evans & Ward, 2007). In the context of my personal experience I found that it might be
interesting to compare my experiences as a student employee in the UC Berkeley library to some of
the more applicable aspects of Fayol's principles of management. I ... Show more content on

Another of Fayol's principles had to do with authority and responsibility. In the department of the
main stacks, there was a staff librarian who acted as our manager, as well as a group of students that
performed supervisory tasks. In my last year or so in the library I joined this group, and was given
the task of doing some of the day–to–day tasks that kept our department running. These included
opening and closing procedures, keeping statistics of the work done by students, assigning hourly
jobs, training, and so on. The important idea in this principle is that "giving orders and being
responsible must go together" (Evans & Ward, 2007). I would argue that in our department, while
we were responsible for making sure the work was done as well as assigning jobs, if there was a
difficult situation the supervisors were able to refer to the staff librarian for support. For example, if
one student was chronically underperforming or late, we would notify the librarian. If one
considered the group of supervisors plus the librarian who managed us to make up the
"management" of the department, then in whole authority and responsibility did go together. I would
also say that instead of thinking of student supervisors as not being as responsible as they could be,
it would be more plausible to say that the hourly assignment of jobs and other such tasks were ones
that were delegated to them by the librarian, because while he was more responsible, there was no
way that he could

How Far Henri Fayols Principle of Management Is Relevant...
Background
One of the first persons to sit down and try to work out what managers do (and what they should do)
was a Frenchman called Henri Fayol. Fayol was born in Istanbul in 1841 in a French middle class
family. After his graduation in 1860, he began working as an engineer at a large mining company in
France (S.A. commentart–Fourchambault). He eventually became the director, at a time when the
mining company employed more than 1,000 people in.
Through the years, Fayol began to develop what he considered to be the 14 most important
principles of management. Essentially, these explained how managers should organize and interact
with staff.
In 1916, two years before he stepped down as director, he published his "14 Principles of ... Show

3. Discipline:
Fayol considered discipline, as "respect for agreements which are directed at achieving obedience,
application, energy and the outward marks of respect." Authority is of two types: one that stems
from the official position and the other that results from personal knowledge, character and
competence. Again Fayol has given us a scintillating expression: He says: 'Discipline is what
managers make it. ' If managers are disciplined in their own work, the entire organisation becomes
disciplined. If the manager is slack and slovenly in his work, people also become indifferent towards
their work. Fayol thought essential to have supervisors who are competent, impartial and social.
4. Unity of Command:
The workers should receive orders only from one source. Emphasizing on the importance of unity of
command, Fayol wrote, "Should it be violated, authority is undermined. Discipline is in jeopardy,
order disturbed and stability threatened. This rule seems fundamental to me and so I have given it
the rank of a principle." According to him, "A body with two heads is in the social as in the animal
sphere as monster and has difficulty in surviving."
5. Unity of Direction:
By Unity of direction Fayol meant "one unit and one plan" for group of activities having the same
objective. Fayol wrote, "unity of direction (one unit,

What Was Cubism And Fauvism?
What is Cubism and Fauvism? Well, lets start with Cubism first. Cubism is a style of modern art
developed by Pablo Picasso and Georges Braque. These two artist were always working with each
other very closely, so closely that their paintings were almost indistinguishable in who the artist was.
Fauvism on the other hand, "was the first of the avant–garde movements that flourished in France in
the early years of the twentieth century" (Rewald, Hilbrunn Timeline of Art History). Fauvism was
first portrayed by Henri Matisse and also shown somewhat in the paints of Van Gogh's. So what is
the different between Cubism and Fauvism? Many characteristics separate Cubism from Fauvism,
such as: multiple angles, reconstruct objects, flattened space and geometric blocks of color. There
are also many characteristics that separate Fauvism from Cubism, such as: sketchy brushwork,
explosive colors, impulsive brushwork, and having themes of modern urban alienation. Some of the
artists of Cubism and the paintings that we learned about are Pablo Picasso and his House on the
Hill, and Georges Braque and his Violin and Palette. These paintings are easier on the eye compared
to Fauvism. Fauvism has a more bold personality and can sometimes be harsh on the eyes. Artists of
Fauvism include Henri Matisse and Van Gogh. Henri Matisse most famous Fauvism painting that
the book talked about was The Joy of Life (Le Bonheur de vivre). This painting is full of colors

Principles Of Management By Henri Fayol
There many classical management approaches that have shaped what management is today. In
specific, Henri Fayol had major contributions to the world of management through his five
published rules of management. These rules of management to the four functions of management,
planning, organizing, command, and coordination. He stated that the five guidelines of management
were foresight, organization, command, coordination, control. Foresight is when you complete a
plan for the future. The first rule, Foresight involves the construction of a plan for the organization's
future. This rule relates to the planning function of management as firms today also create strategic
plans or furthering the given organization's success. The second rule, Organization is the duty that
provides the company resources to actually implement the plan, this rule coincides with the
organizing function of their group. Command is the third managerial rule that Fayol introduced and
what he meant by this is, command is needed to lead and inspire workers to complete a certain goal.
This managerial rule relates to the leading function of management because the leading function of
managing makes sure that a task is completed. Coordination is the fourth managerial rule introduced
by Fayol, and it means to fit diverse employees and efforts together in order to solve a problem. This
relates to the leading function of management as well because it the function is concerned with

A Depth Analysis Of Henri Fayol 's Perspective On...
Management is one of the most significant factors of production necessary for the realization of a
company's objectives. The number of managers varies from one corporation to another and is highly
dependent on the size of the corporation. The leadership of a company's management is instrumental
as it sets and guides the general direction that the company ought to go. It provides efficient
methods in which the company's resources can be utilized in the production of goods and services as
well as dealing with any deviations, expected or otherwise, in order to increase the productivity and
competitiveness of an organization. This paper will give an in–depth analysis of Henri Fayol's
perspective on management in addition to exploring other perspectives employed by other authors.
Considered as one of the pioneers of modern management, Fayol formulated a theory, which
considers management as one of the key skills of an employee, which is vital across all fields. He
was the first to recognize that management is a separate activity, which can be studied on its own.
An employee with more managerial skills is more valuable than one with only the technical skills
(Byrnes 2014, p.81). According to Fayol, the management has five core functions. These are
planning, organizing, commanding, coordinating, and controlling. Therefore, managerial activities
are concerned with formulation of operational plans for the business. His perspective is
administrative in nature aimed at making

The Theory Of Management By Henri Fayol Essay
The section of business labelled as management has been a cause of debate which began centuries
ago and still has no clear winner, with several theories being proposed on the basic question of 'what
is management?'. Discussions of this kind led to the creation and development of various teachings
and schools of thought on the subject. One such teaching is that of the classical approach, under this
approach theorists would consider management to be a topic that one could study, and be seen as a
structural activity. A theorist who followed this approach was Henri Fayol, who published his ideas
in the early twentieth century. At this time people believed that the activity of management revolved
around key principles which could guarantee managerial success. However as time passed and
people continued to study management, theorists such as Weber, Mintzberg and many others
proposed the idea that management should be studied empirically by analysing what managers
actually do. Therefore this essay will be analysing what theorist offers the most effective analysis of
what management actually is.
The perspective of management taken by Fayol (1841–1925) and the rationale behind his argument.
Fayol's approach to management was centred on his own personnel experiences which is one of the
main contrasts between Fayol and other theorists who use empirical methods. Fayol spent his
working life in the French mining industry. Until his early thirties, Fayol worked as an engineer

Multiple Extended Metaphors
The passage explains the thought process throughout an interrogation of the person that is suspected
of in the situation; then it goes on to explain the entire act of interrogation as a whole with the
interrogator and suspect. Throughout the passage the author uses multiple extended metaphors to
express the thought process of suspect in an interrogation room. In the passage it states, "More to the
point, they like to imagine their suspects imagining a small, open window at the top of the long wall.
The open window is the escape hatch, the Out." The author uses the window to symbolize a suspect
trying to find an escape route that tends to be filled with lies to get out of any type of punishment of
the crime. This is directed to those that lack knowledge on the subject of things in relation to
interrogations; although, the audience can be generally anyone because the passage is made to
widely understood by most people. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In reality, both the interrogator and the suspect are looking for illogical answers because the suspect
is only focusing on looking for his own personal escape rather than taking in the situation in as a
whole which is selfish and irrational because if the suspect put even a small amount of thought into
maybe trying to help the situation it could possibly be easier for both sides, but since it is basically
engraved into everyone's mind to think for themselves it always takes much more effort in such

Van Gogh Motives
As humans have changed and progressed throughout history, so has their art– from cave paintings to
Greek sculptures to the incredible realism of the Renaissance. In addition, throughout history art has
been questioned– why did the artist make this? What are they trying to convey? What is the purpose,
the symbol, the reason? Every artist has a motive for creating, and it may be as honorable as
challenging a social injustice, or as mundane as a commission. The three most universal motives for
making art are for beauty, for money on commission, and to convey a message about the artist's
thoughts or emotions on a subject. Each of these motives can be influential, however conveying a
concept through art is the most powerful, as it has the ability to change the way society operates.
It is often said that art is meant to be beautiful for the audience. Artists follow this idea by making
and being inspired by beautiful objects such as nature or other people. One artist who displays this is
Vincent Van Gogh. Many of Van Gogh's paintings are based on the things around him, including
flowers, stars, or people. It is known that he was not on commission, as he only sold one painting in
his life. Although it is true that many of his paintings show great emotion, Van Gogh was not
specifically trying to say something, and any message in his paintings are assumed from his mental
illnesses. Although not considered beautiful in their time, Van Gogh painted to capture the beauty
around him. For

Henri Matisse's Le Bonheur De Vivre painting analyzed

  • 1. Le Bonheur De Vivre, By Henri Matisse We can first look at what these paintings where all about. Le bonheur de vivre (The Joy of Life) is a painting by Henri Matisse and together with the Picasso's Les Demoiselles d'Avignon, Le bonheur de vivre is regarded as one of the pillars of early modernism . Modernism is the period of the 19th, 20th century period that was characterized by the culture trends changes and transformation. Therefore the work of Le bonheur de vivre taken from the Baudelaire's poem, Invitation to a Voyage (1857) depicts a man inviting her lover travel with him to a paradise. This painting shows nude women in a "traditional classical idyll but one woman – thought to represent the painter's wife – wears contemporary dress. This is Matisse's only major painting ... • 5. Are the Classical Functions Put Forward by Henri Fayol in... Academics for years have been pondering the effectiveness of classical approaches to newer conceptualizations within management functions. Are the classical functions put forward by Henri Fayol in 1949 still valid and true today?, or are the theories put forward by other academics such as Mintzberg more valid?, or would the scientific type management concepts be more fitting?. To answer such questions this report examines two Journal journals, "Are the classical management functions useful in describing managerial work?" (Journal 1) and "Some effects of Fayolism" (Journal 2). By analyzing the different arguments put forward, I aim to conclude which theory is more appropriate to management study today. In journal 1, Carroll and Gillen ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Non classical conceptualizations of managerial work (Mintzberg, Stewart etc.) help define the nature of managerial work. However Fayol's classical approach best conceptualizes management functions and a manager's job, so it is the best source to be used for educational purposes. Journal 2 addresses two perspectives of management to evaluate the concepts of management fashion and its management recommendations. There is a logical supposition that organizations must strive to be unique in their business operations to have a fair chance of success, within competition. However the idea of management states presumes resemblance in all businesses, which calls for the profession of 'managers' to exist (Brunsson, 2008 pp33). This journal also recognizes the merit of Fayol's theory in molding Management conceptualization. Furthermore recognizes the success of management recommendations listed by other theorists such as Mintzberg and Kotter, who refer to Fayol's functions to a respected degree. However the journal does not recognize any relationship between Fayol's functions and organizational performance. Brunsson refers to Fredrick Taylor's 'bottom–up' view to address this issue. Discussing managements recommendations in terms of fashions imply; "dissatisfaction with the existing recommendations, and ambition to improve these recommendations, a ... • 9. Principles Of Henri Fayol In the early 1900s, large organizations were finding that they needed to be managed too. At the time little management models and procedures were in place until scientists like Henri Fayol came along and paved the way. Henri was born in 1841 and his first concepts in principles of management are the underlying factors for successful management. Henri Fayol, a French coal mine director, is most notably known for his contributions to the five main functions of management that are described in detail in his book entitled "Administration Industrielle et Generale" (Norma, n.d.). Henri Fayol's management idea is that there are 14 principles of management that can be drilled down into five components that should be used to control and plan production. Fayol's ideas were introduced into textbooks in the 1950's and since then the five main points have been drilled down, by other authors, to four main components of management. Those four main points are planning, organizing, leading, and controlling, which is also called the P.O.L.C. process. Staffing was removed as a main function in management. One of the most important steps in managing a business is planning, which is also the first step in the P.O.L.C. process. Planning is one of the most vital tools you will need to use in business. From starting your own business to growing into an empire you will plan the entire way. As a business grows you will need to map out the new path the company will take. For ... • 13. Gantt Chart Henry Gantt's legacy to production management is the following: * The Gantt chart: Still accepted as an important management tool today, it provides a graphic schedule for the planning and controlling of work, and recording progress towards stages of a project. The chart has a modern variation, Program Evaluation and Review Technique (PERT). * Industrial Efficiency: Industrial efficiency can only be produced by the application of scientific analysis to all aspects of the work in progress. The industrial management role is to improve the system by eliminating chance and accidents.[6] * The Task And Bonus System: He linked the bonus paid to managers to how well they taught their employees to improve performance. * The social ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Each row of the chart corresponds to an individual machine or operator. These charts do not indicate which tasks were to be done, however. A novel method of displaying interdependencies of processes to increase visibility of production schedules was invented in 1896 by Karol Adamiecki, which was similar to the one defined by Gantt in 1903. However, Adamiecki did not publish his works in a language popular in the West; hence Gantt was able to popularize a similar method, which he developed around the years 1910–1915, and the solution became attributed to Gantt. With minor modifications, what originated as the Adamiecki's chart is now more commonly referred to as the Gantt Chart.[11][12] Gantt Chart A Gantt chart is a type of bar chart, developed by Henry Gantt in the 1910s, that illustrates a project schedule. Gantt charts illustrate the start and finish dates of the terminal elements and summary elements of a project. Terminal elements and summary elements comprise the work breakdown structure of the project. Some Gantt charts also show the dependency (i.e. precedence network) relationships between activities. Gantt charts can be used to show current schedule status using percent–complete shadings and a vertical "TODAY" line as shown here. Histrory: The first known tool of this type was developed in 1896 by Karol Adamiecki, who called it a harmonogram. Adamiecki published his chart in 1931, however, only in Polish, which limited both its adoption and ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 17. Analysis Of Le Cafe De Nuit Le Café de Nuit by Vincent van Gogh is possibly one of Van Gogh's most famous paintings, located at the Yale Art Gallery in New Haven, CT. It stands at 28 1/2 inches tall and has a width of 36 1/4 inches, and for being nearly 130 years old this piece is extremely well preserved. This is an oil painting done on canvas circa 1888, that depicts the Café de l'Alcazar, a place where van Gogh often ate his meals, and watched as the walls of this building slowly filled with prostitutes and vagrants each night. In a letter to his brother, the night café was vibrantly explained for exactly what is seen now on the canvas. The strong linear pattern in this painting is directly related to the one–point perspective used in crafting the room and the furniture in it. The floor boards are the strongest representation of the linear pattern, pushing the viewers eye diagonally back from the negative space in the bottom left corner, to lively back wall of the room that is cluttered with a bar, an open door, and fellow civilians sitting at a table. Other objects like the pool table in the middle of the room, assorted side tables and the paneling on the walls also helps to guide the eye in the same way. Analysis Of Faith And Doubt At Ground Zero In the documentary "Faith and Doubt at Ground Zero," a number of people were interviewed about how their religious beliefs or non beliefs, were challenged since the events of September 11th. The interviews with priests, rabbis, family members of victims, survivors, lay people, atheists and agnostics, this documentary explores how Americans' spiritual lives may have changed since the event. When a tragic event happens, people would either grow closer to god or outgrow god. To those people who do not believe in a god, these actions will just prove their beliefs. In the beginning of the film, people immediately started to question God. Some of them started to question why would a god so mighty approve this kind of actions. Dr. Michael Brescia, who is a physician who saw pictures of people jumping off the building, "I wonder how many of them thought if there was a God. And if there was a God, why me? Why this? And where am I going to go?" This kind of questions always come up when something catastrophic happens. Others, however, did not ask any questions and just accepted what has happened. Kim Coleman, who lost her daughter said, "God knows something I don't, God knows best and knows better than we do." There were also a couple of people who were not so sure what to think of god anymore. Rev. Joseph Griesedieck, a priest who volunteered at Ground Zero said, "the face of God was a blank slate for me. Compare And Contrast Frederick Winslow Taylor And Henri Fayol Introduction The purpose of this academic essay is to compare and contrast two management theorists in their individual fields of work and further more discuss how these theorists made contributions to the field of management. The author of this academic essay plans to use parameters to discuss their findings through books, journal articles and credible online resources. The theorists the author plans to discuss are Frederick Winslow Taylor and Henri Fayol. The term, "Management", can be defined as, "the control or organising of something", (Cambridge University Press, 2015). This means the way in which, in this case in business terms is the method in which a company or any other business organisation, is managed and run on a daily basis. ... What sets Fayol out from other theorists involved in management was the fact that he wasn't American like previous theorists such as Taylor but was in fact French. He worked independently during the time when scientific management became known to the world. In 1916 he wrote, "Administration Industrielle et Generale", which was later translated and published in English as, "General and Industrial Management", (Morley, 2013). While modern film productions have lost the ambitious classicism of early cinema, the idea to view cinematography itself as a self–governing construction of thinking has been carved into the history of continental philosophy. Due to the variety of material and conjecture, film manipulates the four– dimensional reality in which we live our everyday lives in. From A quoi pensent les films?, Jacques Aumont, a French academic writer on film theory, states that "film has the power of thinking" in order to express that the art form has the ability to release us from the restriction of our realistic judgements and radical perceptions, producing a poetic and dreamlike reality. Henri Bergson, a French philosopher, declines this model theory by communicating that the cinematic adventure actively perceive time and movement all in one platform, his philosophy was the variance of material and spiritual actuality. In a counter exploration of Benjamin 's ideals, when one looks at a clock they view purely different placements and positions of the clocks hands, but this act entails no specific spiritual connection to the viewer. The same logic of this situation compares to the example from Benjamin's. Only the single audience's encounter can determine the product. Exploring this theory, French philosopher Deleuze, who wrote on the philosophy of literature, film, and fine art, counters Benjamin's statement arguing that our mind does not need to put together the arbitrary components that is required to construct a piece but rather we can receive the information as a whole. In his two most popular books on cinema, Deleuze argues that because of "Image– Mouvement" (Cinéma I) and "Image–Temps" (Cinéma II), Deleuze moves to say films do not think with plain set images like paintings, which produce no mechanics to personify thought, but with "movement–images" and "time–images." Movement–images are explained as a scene of action the creates a reaction, producing the cycle of similar scenes. Time–images are defined by Deleuze as a scene that is created entirely on thought. Mary Follett is best known for creating and implementing a management style where employees were encouraged to have more responsibility in their working environment (Gibson et al. 2013). Follett's revolutionary management theory placed a strong significance on group dynamics (Gibson et al. 2013) where the authoritarian power is fluid and should flow to the person who can best help the organisation achieve its goals (Waddell, Jones & George 2013, p.7) instead of whoever holds the highest rung in the hierarchy. Follett's system suggests that if employees had a sufficient understanding and had adequate skills, the workers instead of the managers would take control and the managers would take on a facilitator's role coaching and motivating the workers where necessary (Waddell, Jones & George 2013, p.7). Her reasoning behind this system was that she often saw managers underestimate the value of their employees no matter whether it was their knowledge, skill set or experience (Gibson et al. 2013). They burnt cane fields and refineries in order to destroy the system that had held them captive. John K. Thornton believes that the contribution of African soldiers was the main reason for the success of the Haitian Revolution. In his article, "African Soldiers in the Haitian Revolution", he noted that, 'the rebellious slaves of Haiti inflicted grievous military defeat on all who opposed them.' The majority of the enslaved persons in Saint–Domingue were not simply just agricultural workers, but from whence they came, they were soldiers, merchants and even kings. The African–born enslaved persons, who made up the majority of the masses, were able to use their prior military experience to assist them in their victory and some even participated in the Congolese wars. They were skilled in Guerilla Warfare which they used to defeat all the forces which they fought. Thornton noted, from an eye– witness' account, that when the ex–enslaved persons engaged in battle 'they never massed in the open or waited in line to charge.' And these tactics 'made them appear to be six times as numerous' than they were. Thornton stated that if persons view the enslaved people of Haiti as people with strong militaristic backgrounds and not just agricultural labourers, the question as to what was the main reason for the success of Haitian Revolution may be answered. Henri Fayol Management Principals Through Experience Henri Fayol: Management Principals through Experience Introduction While the subject of management has proven a popular topic, especially during the last 25 years, the subject is certainly not exclusive to latter part of the 20th century (Donkin, 1998). Henri Fayol, a turn–of–the–century French mining engineer and eventual management executive is often credited with becoming one of the first to develop and write about the now popular topic. "Dubbed the father of modern operational–management theory" (Long, 1997, p.31), Fayol's ideas and theories on management are founded in his practical 49 years of experience working in the mining and steel industry. However, Fayol was quick to point out that his theories were not confined to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... These powerful industries led to the formation of trade unions, which were becoming more and more influential. And yet, while the rate of earnings for companies was slowing, the cost of living had remained relatively constant, leading to a moderate level of economic prosperity. Fayol believed that while the industrial, political, and social tides were changing, a strong administrative regime was necessary to provide stability. At the same time Fayol believed that "many of the authoritarian elements of nineteenth–century industrial paternalism" (Reid, 1995) were no longer necessary with the rise of unionism. Putting his thoughts into action in accordance with his beliefs as well as in accordance with the changes in the power bases, Fayol promoted policies that were worker–friendly. Despite the fact that during this period the concept of the "company controlled town," prevailed and was heavily entrenched in the French mining industry, Fayol implemented changes in policy by which his company would no longer monitor church attendance or set up "company stores" where existing businesses were already established to serve the needs of the local population (Reid, 1995). Small changes like these were a major departure from business control of every aspect of employee life, both professional and private. Work History

Fayols 14 Principles HOW FAYOL 'S 14 PRINCIPLES OF MANAGEMENT ARE USED IN A MILITARY ENVIRONMENT By Mark Culligan "The process of coordinating and integrating work activities so that they are completed efficiently and effectively with and through other people". (Henri Fayol "General and Industrial Management."(1916)) Introduction Management is a very complex field. Not only must managers pay attention to what is best for the organization, but they also have to do what is best for their customers. At the same time, the manager must satisfy the need of their employees. Henri Fayol developed fourteen principles of management in 1916 that organisations are recommended to apply to order to run properly. This paper will show how some of Fayols ... Compare And Contrast Max Weber And Fayol In this essay, I have chosen to discuss how Max Weber (1864–1920) and Henri Fayol (1841–1925) compare and contrast in their ideology and contributions to the field of management. Max Weber focused on how to structure an organisation to become successful. He developed six main elements to promote this success, which he considered would develop efficiency. He called it bureaucracy. Bureaucracy has its advantages and disadvantages, it was considered to be "both rational and efficient" (Tiernan, Morley, 2013, p. 17), but for example Weber's rather strict division of labour also led to workers becoming bored and unmotivated. The six elements that he created were; Division of labour, Hierarchy, Selection, Career orientation, Formalisation and Impersonality. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... They agree upon the importance of the division of labour, the idea of a hierarchy and rules within an organisation. In contrast to this they handle such matters as equity and impersonality, which are similar concepts, very differently as stated. Fayol was more personal than Weber; he embraced team work and initiative in employees. In his own study he observed that half the activities performed lasted less than nine minutes and only ten per cent exceeded one hour. The captive man forced his arms and legs to move, only to be pushed back by his strings. The voice laughed, the sound of drums and trumpets grew louder as the man fought to set his limbs free. The farther the woman walked, the more the music grew. "Try all you want little bird, but your impurities hold you back," The voice yells,"It is your fault the woman will fall! Try all you want! Your lies will never set you free.". Suddenly the people in the windows revealed themselves to the man. The men in every window had been him, except for the first. The family had been him when he was a child. The memories came flooding in like a hurricane. Fear, anger, love, hate, and pain. He felt all these emotions as he tried to escape the web strings. Scientific Management & Frederick Taylor Essay Scientific management is defined by (Robbins et al., 2012) as 'an approach that involves using scientific methods to define the "one best way" for a job to be done'. Frederick W. Taylor is said to be the forefather of scientific management, during his time many people criticised Taylor and his work, however it is easy to see that many of his approaches are used in contemporary management systems. This essay will provide a review of the article 'The Ideas of Frederick W. Taylor', Academy of Management Review (Locke, E., 1982) which discusses the positives and negatives of Taylor's theory. Locke (1982) also articulates Taylor's major criticisms in his journal article; degradation of the worker, loss of complete skills, authoritarianism or dictatorship power given to management, exploitation of workers and dishonesty. Locke concludes his article stating that even though it has been 65 years since Taylor's death and many more theorists of business management have risen and fallen, Frederick W. Taylor's research and findings are still used in today's business systems (1982, p.22). Over the years many articles have been written regarding scientific management and Frederick w. Taylor, 3 examples of these articles will be analysed and discussed in the further paragraphs of this essay. Wrege, C. D. and Stotka, A. M. wrote an article concerning the relationship between Taylor and his assistant Morris L. Cooke and the evidence that shows Taylor used much of Cooke's own research and study for his publication of 'Principles of Scientific Management'. Blake A. M. and Moseley J. L. undertook research which discovered that Taylor's principles are still being used in business systems one hundred years after Taylor's death. Darmody, Peter B. wrote his article regarding Henry L. Rodrigues, CA, 2001, 'Fayol's 14 principles of management then and now: a framework for managing today's organizations effectively', Management Decision, vol. 31, no. 10, pp. 880–889. Rodrigues discusses in some detail how Fayol's principles of management individually are/are not used in modern management. He doesn't necessarily hold a contention or argument as he is ultimately comparing and contrasting the world of management in US organisations from early 1900's to now. However the result of each of his discussions fall in the same favour each time, which may potentially be viewed as a bias and further as a limitation of this journal. Pryor, MS & Taneja, S 2010, 'Henry Fayol, practitioner and theoretician – revered and reviled', Journal of Management History, vol. 16, no. 4, pp. 489–503. The purpose of this paper by Pryor & Taneja (2010) is to illustrate through examining contemporary management and management theories how Fayol's contribution of his principles and model theory is relevant in management today. This is done by a process of researching and examining the work of major academics (e.g. Mintzberg (1989), Porter (1985), Taylor (1947), Kotter (1982), & Berdaves (2002)) Pryor and Taneja (2010) compare the works and ideas of both Fayol and these authors to find the similarities and differences between their theories. A limitation of this article may be the large focus of similarities between studies, paying rare attention to the differences between Fayol and the given management theorist. Future studies on this issue should be undertaken in an argumentative manner, given equivalent attention to both aspects of the argument. Indeed; this article supports the conclusions of similar studies (e.g. Rodrigues, 2001. Archer, 1990. Fells, 2000) that Fayol's theory is relevant today, and that his 5 management functions are evident in all organisations (Hales 1986). Another shared conclusion between journals is that Fayol's work sets the foundations of management practise and theory today. Even though Mintzberg (1973) argues differently, his theory "tends to ... Application of Henri Fayol's managerial principles in Nigerian secondary schools: Stakeholders perceptions By Maryam Adamu Department of Educational Administration and Planing Federal College of Education Zaria–Nigeria Maryamadamu1@gmail.com +2348034505895 ABSTRACT One of the major problems facing secondary school administration in Nigeria has been the absence of appropriate and efficient guidelines for effective management. Some of the administrative management strategies have been based on a variety factors. While some have be based on set goals with no adequate information, others have been characterized by a high level of ignorance of administrative processes on the part of the administrators. The falling standard in education in the country is partly attributable to this poor administration of the secondary schools due to lack of specialized personnel with in–depth administrative strategies. This study is therefore aimed at addressing the deficiencies in the administrative process in the secondary schools through the application of the Henri Fayol's managerial principles in the management of the secondary schools. A structured questionnaire was designed with the fourteen principles on which the opinion of the secondary schools stakeholders (Principals, Teachers, PTA and Educational Inspectors) was solicited. The tested instrument was then administered to a total of 3732 respondents selected through a stratified random sampling procedure across the six geopolitical ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 109. The Breakfast Club Analysis The film The Breakfast Club (1985) by John Hughes is just one story of the many that were popularized by the teen movie craze of the 1980's. The comedy follows five high school–aged adolescents as they navigate their way through a day of Saturday detention that is not only atypical but rather an experience which ends up changing the whole perspective on the lives that they have been living. What sets this film apart from other popular high school movies of the time such Fast Times at Ridgemont High and Ferris Bueller's Day Off is that the teens portrayed in the film are neither sexualized or over the top, but rather a fairly accurate portrayal of the average American teen at the time. Every character, who each represent a different subculture of the American adolescent, has a deepness and complexity which are heightened by the individual stories they tell. Layers of each teen's personality are slowly stripped away over the course of the movie until they all come to realize that they all share the same basic problems, they all have the same basic wants and needs, and, most importantly, they are all human. A good portion of the film can be related to the ideas explored by Michel Foucault in his Panopticism, specifically when referring to the role which the school system plays in influencing the children's social inequality and how it modifies their behavior in general. Management is an area under discussion and criticised since many years before till today by many contributors and authors. There have been developed many ideas and notions regarding the right way to manage and been successful manager. Some of the most important contributors are Henri Fayol and Henry Mintzberg with two different views but, in the same time very similar. Fayol developed a strategy based on the way he was managing, for instance he was the only one who had to make the plan, to organise everything, to command and get involve in situations where it was necessary, co–ordinate and synchronize all the activities take place in the organization, and last control everything. In few words he was the only main head of the organization. It does not mean that he was alone but in compare with the present most of the organizations operate with the bureaucratic structure of Max Weber's theory that "organizations are managed on an impersonal, rational authority basis and they are not depend on to a particular person who may leave or die"(Weber, 1997, p.45). Today all the organizations have been divided in many departments and all these departments with the help of the assistant managers have been undertake by one Fayol's element. These departments make all the work and then introduce their work to the manager. So the only thing that managers have to do is consider ready information and reports that the units of the organization have done, and then just take a decision. And this is what exactly Mintzberg observes in his research. As a fact that Fayol's elements are widely used not exactly by the managers but rather from the whole organization. Fayol is one of the three classical theorists, along with Max Weber who came up with the Authority and Bureaucracy theory and F W Taylor who came up with Scientific Management. Henri Fayol (1841– 1935) started off as a coal–mining engineer at a large mining company in France when he was at age nineteen. Eventually Fayol became a Managing director in that mining company and hired around a thousands of employees. Fayol spent a total of thirty years at the company. After that, he devoted his life to management and this is when he introduced his theories to the world. Fayol were among the first to introduce management education to the world. He believes management needs improvement and it could be taught so he designed the principles as a guideline. He wrote a book about his perspectives of management in his book "Administration Industrielle et GeÂneÂrale" which was published in French in 1916. (Fells, 2000, p.345) This book outlines his perspective and principles on effective management in organization and is based on his own experiences as a managerial leader in a large company. His five functions of management and fourteen principles of management were discussed in the book, which are still relevant and are widely used in numerous companies in today's business world. Graduating from the National School of Mines at the age of 19 as a mining engineer, he started out his career at Commentry Fourchamboult Company where he remained throughout his working life. Progressing into general management during his early thirties he later became Managing Director, instigating the company's rise from being on the verge of bankruptcy to becoming one of the leading steel producers and mining operators. He wrote many technical papers on mining engineering and the geology of coal fields, later turning his focus to general administration, publishing Administration Industrielle et Générale in 1916 which was translated in 1949. This can be seconded by empirical support from other theorists such as Rosemary Stewart who conducted a study of 160 British middle and top managers and found that they worked for half an hour or more without interruption around once every two days (Stewart 1967). Subsequently Mintzberg believing the reality of management to be vastly different from the true image went on to offer his own description of what 'to manage' entails. This comprised of 10 roles which can be split into 3 subsections. Mintzberg (1975) "Formal authority gives rise to the three interpersonal roles, which in turn give rise to the three informational roles; these two sets of roles enable the manager to play the four decisional roles". Although Mintzberg's attempt to reform the views on management was successful in stirring other theorists to conduct studies in the area, he can be criticised for the language he used not being explicit enough and although he has empirical evidence to support his discovery of how managers behave, it does not imply this is the way managers should behave as this view of management behaviour may not be that of an effective manager? Fayol's “Principles” in a University Library In reading through Management Basics for Information Professionals by Evans and Ward, one of the theories of management that stood out to me was the "administrative approach" (2007). Henry Fayol was one of the main proponents of this approach, though there were many others as well. Fayol "divided organizational activities into five major groups" and also identified 14 principles of management and believed that "management is a skill one can learn, rather than a talent received at birth" (Evans & Ward, 2007). In the context of my personal experience I found that it might be interesting to compare my experiences as a student employee in the UC Berkeley library to some of the more applicable aspects of Fayol's principles of management. I ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Another of Fayol's principles had to do with authority and responsibility. In the department of the main stacks, there was a staff librarian who acted as our manager, as well as a group of students that performed supervisory tasks. In my last year or so in the library I joined this group, and was given the task of doing some of the day–to–day tasks that kept our department running. These included opening and closing procedures, keeping statistics of the work done by students, assigning hourly jobs, training, and so on. The important idea in this principle is that "giving orders and being responsible must go together" (Evans & Ward, 2007). I would argue that in our department, while we were responsible for making sure the work was done as well as assigning jobs, if there was a difficult situation the supervisors were able to refer to the staff librarian for support. For example, if one student was chronically underperforming or late, we would notify the librarian. If one considered the group of supervisors plus the librarian who managed us to make up the "management" of the department, then in whole authority and responsibility did go together. I would also say that instead of thinking of student supervisors as not being as responsible as they could be, it would be more plausible to say that the hourly assignment of jobs and other such tasks were ones that were delegated to them by the librarian, because while he was more responsible, there was no way that he could ... Background One of the first persons to sit down and try to work out what managers do (and what they should do) was a Frenchman called Henri Fayol. Fayol was born in Istanbul in 1841 in a French middle class family. After his graduation in 1860, he began working as an engineer at a large mining company in France (S.A. commentart–Fourchambault). He eventually became the director, at a time when the mining company employed more than 1,000 people in. Through the years, Fayol began to develop what he considered to be the 14 most important principles of management. Essentially, these explained how managers should organize and interact with staff. In 1916, two years before he stepped down as director, he published his "14 Principles of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... 3. Discipline: Fayol considered discipline, as "respect for agreements which are directed at achieving obedience, application, energy and the outward marks of respect." Authority is of two types: one that stems from the official position and the other that results from personal knowledge, character and competence. Again Fayol has given us a scintillating expression: He says: 'Discipline is what managers make it. ' If managers are disciplined in their own work, the entire organisation becomes disciplined. If the manager is slack and slovenly in his work, people also become indifferent towards their work. Fayol thought essential to have supervisors who are competent, impartial and social. 4. Unity of Command: The workers should receive orders only from one source. Emphasizing on the importance of unity of command, Fayol wrote, "Should it be violated, authority is undermined. Discipline is in jeopardy, order disturbed and stability threatened. This rule seems fundamental to me and so I have given it the rank of a principle." According to him, "A body with two heads is in the social as in the animal sphere as monster and has difficulty in surviving." 5. Unity of Direction: By Unity of direction Fayol meant "one unit and one plan" for group of activities having the same objective. Fayol wrote, "unity of direction (one unit, ... • 137. What Was Cubism And Fauvism? What is Cubism and Fauvism? Well, lets start with Cubism first. Cubism is a style of modern art developed by Pablo Picasso and Georges Braque. These two artist were always working with each other very closely, so closely that their paintings were almost indistinguishable in who the artist was. Fauvism on the other hand, "was the first of the avant–garde movements that flourished in France in the early years of the twentieth century" (Rewald, Hilbrunn Timeline of Art History). Fauvism was first portrayed by Henri Matisse and also shown somewhat in the paints of Van Gogh's. So what is the different between Cubism and Fauvism? Many characteristics separate Cubism from Fauvism, such as: multiple angles, reconstruct objects, flattened space and geometric blocks of color. There are also many characteristics that separate Fauvism from Cubism, such as: sketchy brushwork, explosive colors, impulsive brushwork, and having themes of modern urban alienation. Some of the artists of Cubism and the paintings that we learned about are Pablo Picasso and his House on the Hill, and Georges Braque and his Violin and Palette. These paintings are easier on the eye compared to Fauvism. Fauvism has a more bold personality and can sometimes be harsh on the eyes. Artists of Fauvism include Henri Matisse and Van Gogh. Henri Matisse most famous Fauvism painting that the book talked about was The Joy of Life (Le Bonheur de vivre). This painting is full of colors exploding across the canvas. The Joy of ... • 141. Principles Of Management By Henri Fayol There many classical management approaches that have shaped what management is today. In specific, Henri Fayol had major contributions to the world of management through his five published rules of management. These rules of management to the four functions of management, planning, organizing, command, and coordination. He stated that the five guidelines of management were foresight, organization, command, coordination, control. Foresight is when you complete a plan for the future. The first rule, Foresight involves the construction of a plan for the organization's future. This rule relates to the planning function of management as firms today also create strategic plans or furthering the given organization's success. The second rule, Organization is the duty that provides the company resources to actually implement the plan, this rule coincides with the organizing function of their group. Command is the third managerial rule that Fayol introduced and what he meant by this is, command is needed to lead and inspire workers to complete a certain goal. This managerial rule relates to the leading function of management because the leading function of managing makes sure that a task is completed. Coordination is the fourth managerial rule introduced by Fayol, and it means to fit diverse employees and efforts together in order to solve a problem. • 145. A Depth Analysis Of Henri Fayol 's Perspective On... Management is one of the most significant factors of production necessary for the realization of a company's objectives. The number of managers varies from one corporation to another and is highly dependent on the size of the corporation. The leadership of a company's management is instrumental as it sets and guides the general direction that the company ought to go. It provides efficient methods in which the company's resources can be utilized in the production of goods and services as well as dealing with any deviations, expected or otherwise, in order to increase the productivity and competitiveness of an organization. This paper will give an in–depth analysis of Henri Fayol's perspective on management in addition to exploring other perspectives employed by other authors. Considered as one of the pioneers of modern management, Fayol formulated a theory, which considers management as one of the key skills of an employee, which is vital across all fields. He was the first to recognize that management is a separate activity, which can be studied on its own. An employee with more managerial skills is more valuable than one with only the technical skills (Byrnes 2014, p.81). According to Fayol, the management has five core functions. These are planning, organizing, commanding, coordinating, and controlling. Therefore, managerial activities are concerned with formulation of operational plans for the business. • 149. The Theory Of Management By Henri Fayol Essay The section of business labelled as management has been a cause of debate which began centuries ago and still has no clear winner, with several theories being proposed on the basic question of 'what is management?'. Discussions of this kind led to the creation and development of various teachings and schools of thought on the subject. One such teaching is that of the classical approach, under this approach theorists would consider management to be a topic that one could study, and be seen as a structural activity. A theorist who followed this approach was Henri Fayol, who published his ideas in the early twentieth century. At this time people believed that the activity of management revolved around key principles which could guarantee managerial success. However as time passed and people continued to study management, theorists such as Weber, Mintzberg and many others proposed the idea that management should be studied empirically by analysing what managers actually do. Therefore this essay will be analysing what theorist offers the most effective analysis of what management actually is. The perspective of management taken by Fayol (1841–1925) and the rationale behind his argument. Fayol's approach to management was centred on his own personnel experiences which is one of the main contrasts between Fayol and other theorists who use empirical methods. • 157. Van Gogh Motives As humans have changed and progressed throughout history, so has their art– from cave paintings to Greek sculptures to the incredible realism of the Renaissance. In addition, throughout history art has been questioned– why did the artist make this? What are they trying to convey? What is the purpose, the symbol, the reason? Every artist has a motive for creating, and it may be as honorable as challenging a social injustice, or as mundane as a commission. The three most universal motives for making art are for beauty, for money on commission, and to convey a message about the artist's thoughts or emotions on a subject. Each of these motives can be influential, however conveying a concept through art is the most powerful, as it has the ability to change the way society operates. It is often said that art is meant to be beautiful for the audience. Artists follow this idea by making and being inspired by beautiful objects such as nature or other people. One artist who displays this is Vincent Van Gogh. Many of Van Gogh's paintings are based on the things around him, including flowers, stars, or people. It is known that he was not on commission, as he only sold one painting in his life. Although it is true that many of his paintings show great emotion, Van Gogh was not specifically trying to say something, and any message in his paintings are assumed from his mental illnesses. Although not considered beautiful in their time, Van Gogh painted to capture the beauty around him. For ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
