3. Education Galen received a good education that prepared him for a
successful career as a doctor.
His father Was a rich architect
Galen Spent twelve years travelling to improve his knowledge
(conocimientos, información) .
He went to the famous medical school in Alexandria.
He was a
surgeon
(cirujano) too.
He gained practical experience as a surgeon at the
gladiators’ school (surgery= cirugía)
Gladiators were trained to fight with each other, and wild
animals in amphitheatres.
They suffered stab wounds (puñaladas), broken bones and
other injuries (injury=herida, lesión)

4. In Rome When he was thirty three years old, he travelled to Rome.
He soon became famous and he was a teacher of medicine.
The brain He proved that the brain controlls the body. People thought
that heart controlled the body.
He also proved that veins (las venas) carried blood (sangre)
His methods: He followed the Hippocrates’ methods.
Observation: He told doctors to observe, record and use their
experience of past cases to decide how to treat the illness
(enfermedad)
Theory of
opposites
Like Hippocrates he believed in the theory of the four humours.
However, Galen did not copy Hippocrates!
Dissection Galen had dissected dead bodies in Alexandría to increase his
knowledge of the human body.
5. Anatomy
(Anatomía)
He proved that animals’s anatomy is different from human
anatomy.
Books He wrote 60 books. These books became the medical text
books, for 1500 years!
