4. Secundary: 4-7 Km/h. Vertical. They can be transmitted
only in solids.

9. Compositional Layers
Crust (70 Km):
Less dense materials.
Mantle (2900 Km):
Denser rocks.
Upper.
Lower.
Core (6378 Km):
Made up of iron.
Outer.
Inner.
10. Physical Layers
Considering their mechanical behaviour:
• Lithosphere:
Solid and rigid.
• Asthenosphere:
Mostly molten and ductile.
• Lower Mantle.
• Core.
11.
12. The Internal Heat of The Earth
It has a double cause:
Residual heat from its formation.
Heat released during radiactive desintegrations
in the core.
As a result we obtein that there is a rate of change of
temperature with depth: 3ºC / 100m (Geothermal
Gradient).
14. During the 19th and 20th century…..
….there was controversy among scientists about
the geological history of the continents. Some
believed their position was fixed, while others
proposed that they had move great distances
over long periods of time.
Alfred Wegener was the first to collect
evidences to demonstrate continents had
previously been joined. In 1914, he proposed
his theory about the “Continental Drift”.
25. When asked about the mechanisms which cause
continents to move….:
The Moon gravitational attraction.
The Earth rotation.
This was a problem Wegener could not solve…. So his
theory was (wrongly) ignored.
26. And he died in
1930 during an
expedition
in
Groenland.
27. WHAT WEGENER NEVER COULD
EXPLAINED….
The Asthenosphere and Covection
Currents
33. Types of Lithospheric Plates
• Continental Plates: composed of continental
lithosphere.
• Oceanic Plates: composed of oceanic
lithosphere.
• Mixed Plate: composed of both oceanic and
continental lithosphere.
46. Rift Valley: Apertura de nuevos mares u
océanos.
Separación de las placas
arábiga y africana, que
origina una depresión en
la que se forman lagos, y
posteriormente llegará a
establecerse un mar.

76. EARTHQUAKES
• Earthquakes are sudden tremblings of the
Earth’s crust, produced by the movements of
the lithospheric plates.
77. VULCANISM
• The danger and violence of a volcanic
eruption depend mostly on the viscosity of
the magma (which is related to its silca
content) and on the quantity of gases it
contains.
• There are different types of volcanic
eruptions.
78.
79.
80. DEFORMACIONES DE LAS ROCAS
• Elásticas.
• Plásticas: plegamientos.
• Frágiles: roturas: diaclasas y fallas.
82. Tipos de Pliegues
• Anticlinal: en el núcleo
se encuentran las capas
más antiguas.
• Sinclinal: en el núcleo
se encuentran las capas
más modernas.
83.
original.
