2. “Waterloo has been recognized
many times as one of the smartest
communities on earth. Green energy
is smart, and community ownership
is smart, and I applaud the Solar City
Coop for making this opportunity
available in Waterloo Region. Ideas
like this belong in our community,
and I am confident that the people
of Waterloo will make the Solar City
Coop a great success.”
Mayor Brenda Halloran
City of Waterloo

3. “Research shows that in moving
toward a more sustainable future we
have to go local. This is also true for
energy because a significant amount
of energy is lost simply by
transporting it long distances.
Community-owned initiatives such as
Solar City Co-Operative, are playing
an important role in moving us in
that direction.”
Manuel Reimer, Assistant Professor
Wilfrid Laurier University
What Community Leaders Think
4. “Waterloo Region has a long history
of both entrepreneurism and co-op
activities. Community Power was
founded here by Sir Adam Beck
nearly 100 years ago, and now the
Solar City Coop is making it possible
for local residents to be part of local
solar energy projects.
Congratulations to the Solar City
Coop for your leadership. I wish you
every success!”
Chair Ken Seiling

9. Sample Project Opportunities
Lease model:
Solar City’s Local Project Coop 123 signs a lease
with a local building owner
SCC recruit’s members from the building (whether
residents or employees), and they get first
opportunity to invest in the project
SCC solicits investment from other members
thereafter
SCC finances and develops the project
10. Sample Project Opportunities
JV Models (vary):
Solar City’s Local Project Coop ABC signs an
agreement with a developer who will own part of
the project, and the SCC will own the other portion
of the project: revenues are shared, and the project
portions are financed independently.
11. Sample Project Opportunities
Developer Financed Model:
Developer finances and develops the project, and
loans money to SCC to buy a portion of the project
Revenues from the project are used to pay the
developer for the loan
SCC can raise memberships and member
investments to pay the loan off faster
SCC effectively gets a project at $0 down
12. Co-ops are Important
