New England Colonies

New England Colonies

 Massachusetts
 Rhode Island
 Connecticut
 New Hampshire
Attributes

The New England colonies were known for their
shipbuilding, fishing, and fur trade. Due to the rocky
soil, the northern colonist could not make a living as
farmers. The forests provided wood for shipbuilding.
The easy access to sea ports made fishing easy. Lastly,
the forests was home to many animals, which later
become money for fur traders.
New England Colonies

New England colonies were affected by the triangular trade, the great
awakening, and the enlightenment. The New England colonies
participated in the triangle trade. It was easy for them to become a large
part of it due to their ability to build ships. The stronger, sturdier ships
could take to the goods longer distances than before. The great
Awakening affected the New England Colonies. Jonathan Edwards and
George Whitefield were leaders in the Great Awakening in the New
England Colonies. It made individual religious practices more popular
than the churches. New denominations were formed and the colonies
came together. The New England colonies were greatly affected by the
John Locke’s Social Contract Theory. This stated that the state only exists
to serve the people, and they are the source of all political power enjoyed
by the state.
Middle Colonies

Middle Colonies

 New York
 New Jersey
 Pennsylvania
 Delaware
Attributes

The Middle Colonies were known for their production
of crops, their harbors, and trade centers. The soil in the
middle colonies was more fertile than that of the New
England colonies, this region was commonly know as
the “bread-basket”. The harbors in New York and
Philadelphia brought imported goods and gave these
colonies an opportunity to export crops and other
goods. Large cities, like New York, were large trade
centers where fur, crops, and other goods were sold.
Middle Colonies

Middle colonies were affected by the triangular trade,
the great awakening, and the enlightenment. The
triangular trade affected the middle colonies because of
their harbors and goods. Slaves and other goods could
be imported and crops and furs could be exported. The
great awakening affect the middle colonies by
Presbyterians, northern Baptist, and Methodist
preachers converted people of all races. The
enlightenment lead to Lockean Liberalism, by John
Locke, which stated that human history should be
progressing toward perfection, not regression.
Southern Colonies

Southern Colonies

 Maryland
 Virginia
 North Carolina
 South Carolina
 Georgia
Attributes

Southern colonies were known for their cash crops,
harbors, and rivers. In the south, the growing season is
longer and the humid climate was better for growing
than in the northern colonies. Cash crops included:
tobacco, pine, rice, indigo, and cotton. The access to the
ocean and tidelands did not only help the plants grow,
but also with trading with other countries and the other
colonies. The rivers also provided faster transportation
inside the colonies.
Southern Colonies


great awakening, and the enlightenment. The Southern
colonies played a large roll in the triangular trade. Growing
most of the colonies cash crops and using slaves to work on
the plantation, they would export their goods and import
people to work their land. The Southern colonies were
affected by the great awakening the same way the middle
colonies were, Presbyterians, northern Baptist, and
Methodist preachers converted people of all races. Striving
to make colonists scrutinize their hearts. The Southern
colonies were affected by the enlightenment by a new sense
of optimism. They believed they would prevail.
