The document discusses the history and applications of computers in the chemical industry. It describes how computers first began being used by chemical engineers in the 1940s-50s for research. It then outlines several key computer applications for chemical engineering design and manufacturing processes today, including CAD, flowsheeting, automation, programming, and simulation. Specific software mentioned include Chemcad, Aspen Plus, Aspen HYSYS, Ariane, BatchReactor, and Matlab. The applications aim to reduce costs, improve safety and productivity, and optimize processes and designs.

4. • In 1948 graduate student in the department of Chemical
Engineering at university of Michigan began to use the digital
computer in their doctoral research
• Digital computer became available in early 1950s .
• Development of Fortran language in 1957.
• In 1973 97 Fortan language written by 100 chemical
engineering educators was distributed
• In 1980 large computer –aided process design package became
available for installation on computer.
5. • The computer found use with chemical engineer for
designing the process rather than the product one of the
popular application areas of computer is known as CAD.
• Use of computer systems to assist in the creation,
modification, analysis, and optimization of a design
• Typical tools:
Tolerance analysis
Mass property calculations
Finite-element modeling and visualization
6. • Flowsheeting has been defined as a use of computer aids to
perform steady state heat and mass balencing , sizing and
costing for chemical process
• The flow sheet is the key document in process design. It shows
the arrangement of the equipment selected to carry out the
process the stream connections; stream flow-rates and
compositions and the operating conditions.
• It is a diagrammatic model of the process.
• This will include piping, instrumentation, equipment design
and plant layout.
7.
8. • The days of operating the plants manually have faded away in
the history. The extent of batch operations is undoubtedly
coming down and the continuous and semi-continuous
operations constantly increasing.
• Automation has been constantly growing with respect to its
applicability and sophistication.
• Automation plays an important role in achieving plant
productivity, efficiency, effectiveness and ensures safety
• Therefore all the operating engineers, production managers are
encouraged to apply and use feasible and appropriate strategies
of "Automation"

10. • FORTRAN
Increase the use of computer programming by scientist
and engineer, IBM began in 1954 and completed in 1957 the 1st
high level procedural programming language, called
FORTRAN, for formula translation.
• Matlab
• Many application program are written in this 3rd
generation
language such as C, C++ etc.

13. Chemcad
Chemcad is an integrated suite of chemical process engineering software Chemcad is
a powerful and flexible chemical process simulation environment, which is
programmed in C++ language.
Advantages of Chemcad
Following are the advantages of Chemcad software.
• Chemcad shows everyday chemical engineering flow sheet of the system hence
product quality is increased.
• It helps to design new processes and equipment.
• It helps to handle raising fuel and feed stock costs.
• Good economic comparison by studying process alternatives.
• Reduce engineering staff (advantage to industry).
• All engineering functions united in single software .
14. Applications of Chemcad
Some applications of Chemcad software are as following.
• Distillations/extractions (batch and continuous) tower designing.
• Reactions (batch and continuous).
• Electrolytic processes.
• Thermo-physical property calculations.
• Vapor/liquid/liquid equilibrium calculations.
• Equipment sizing (heat exchanger).
• Environmental calculations.
• Safety analysis.
• Cost estimations
15. Industries using Chemcad
Chemcad is used as a flow sheeting software in the following
industries.
• Oil exploration and refining.
• Fertilizer.
• Pharmaceuticals.
• Process equipment manufacturers.
• Engineering and construction of plant.
• Academic university programmers.
16.
17. • Aspen Plus is the original Process Simulation software
developed by AspenTech in 1990's. Hysys was a process
simulation software from a company called HyproTech.
Later on in 2005 when AspenTech took over HyproTech, both
the process simulation softwares were merged into Aspen
Hysys
• Aspen Plus is a model used in chemical industries for the
process development
• Aspen Plus is a process modeling tool for conceptual design,
optimization, and performance monitoring for the chemical,
polymer, specialty chemical, metals and minerals, and coal
power industries.
18. • Aspen HYSYS is a process modeling tool for
steady state simulation,
design, performance monitoring,
optimization, and business planning for oil & gas
production, gas processing,
petroleum refining industries.
• Aspen HYSYS is a model which is used only in refineries for
the process like CIP, distillation and so on.
19.
20. • Application- Utilities management and power plant
optimization
• Ariane software purpose is to reduce and manage efficiently
these production costs.
• Ariane is a decision support tool dedicated to the management
of plants that produce energy under the form of utilities (steam,
electricity, hot water)
• The choice of many players from refining industries,
petrochemical plants, paper mills, district heating and
providers of energy services.
21.
22. • BatchReactor is a simulator dedicated to chemical reactors
running in batch mode. It is designed for chemists, technicians
and process engineers who need a reliable and robust tool to
reduce production cost, respond to environmental or safety
regulations, save time in scale-up phases and reduce the time to
market of new products.
• A detailed modeling of the reactor (heating/cooling system,
condenser)
• Acceleration of scale-up projects, from laboratory bench to
pilot and full-scale plants
• Cost reduction through optimization of operating conditions.
23.
24. • We are studied various computer applications in Chemical
Engineering field like
Autocad
Chemcad
Matlab
• But as an industrial point of view all softwares aim are same
reduce production cost,
respond to environmental or safety regulations,
save time in scale-up phases and
reduce the time to market of new products
