California Education and the Environment Initiative 85 environmental instructional units have been developed by the California Environmental Protection Agency and approved by the State Board of Education for K-12 students. These units can replace the state’s science and social science adopted materials. LRET’s Ed Tech Production Unit has been selected to develop the online professional development program for the State of California. Contract to SDCOE is $260,000.00 for 2010-11.

- Good evening and thank for this opportunity to share two SDCOE programs that support student learning in energy efficiency and environmental education. I’m Kim Bess and my colleague at the computer is Grace Ko.
- Utility rate payers (that’s all of us) provide the revenue which is awarded by the Public Utilities Commission to utility company programs that promote energy efficiency and conservation. This brief video will provide information about the Energy and You program developed and administered by the San Diego County Office of Education.
- One of the unique components of this program developed in Ed Tech Productions is online professional development. Teachers anywhere in San Diego County can access the training modules for free from their home or school computer, (thus saving energy.) Here is a quick look at how it works.
- One of the program goals is to have students help their families increase conservation efforts. In the Primary and Upper Elementary units the Power Pals activities help achieve that goal. Here is a sample of one young student’s ideas.
- Once teachers have completed the professional development, either online or through one of our face-to-face sessions, they receive all of the program components at no cost. This includes the curriculum, the DVDs, the hands-on activity materials, and the home-school connection pieces.
- The map of the county shows the districts that have implemented “Energy and You” in one or more of their schools. Currently 29 districts and 20,000 students have experienced “Energy and You.” The feedback from teachers, students, and families has been extremely positive.
- The State of California’s Environmental Protection Agency in conjunction with the State Board of Education have developed replacement units of instruction that become available to teachers in 2011. Because of the expertise modeled in the “Energy and You” project as well as other state and local projects, SDCOE’s LRET Ed Tech Productions and the Energy Education group were selected to develop the state’s online professional development for teachers. This project will begin in July of 2010.
