HOW EFFECTIVE IS THE
COMBINATION OF YOUR MAIN
PRODUCT AND ANCILLARY TEXTS?
How the combination was effective
Creating a film poster and review to accompany the film was effective in:
 Highlighting the genre and themes of the film.
 Drawing in the correct audience that we are targeting.
 Highlighting the social issues raised in the film and successfully
communicating to the audience our aims and intentions as a
production company.
In order to achieve these things, through the combination of our main and
ancillary task, we ensured there was continuity with our film and the
ancillary task through the choices of mise en scene, colour schemes and
other conventions which reflect our sub genre of social realism.
1. The combination of the main task and ancillary task was effective in
communicating to the audience the genre of the film Social Realism.
 One way in which we reflected
social realism was through the
casting of Frank Adams to play the
main character James Smith. Frank
is an armature/ unknown actor and
casting a non-professional actor for
the main role is typical in social
realist films because it adds to the
realistic look and also because small
film companies cannot afford
popular Hollywood actors on a
small budget. So this was another
way in which we reflected the genre
social realism and we decided to use
this convention of the genre in our
ancillary task.
Frank Adams as
James Smith in
the film ‘The
Third Man?’
1. The combination of the main task and ancillary task was effective in
communicating to the audience the genre of the film Social Realism.
 The main image on the poster is of
the protagonist James Smith, played
by Frank Adams. We used three
images of the characters face instead
on one and stated the name of the
actor right next to the title of the
film. These choices brought attention
to the actor who is unprofessional,
which was effective portraying the
genre of social realism but also in
making the audience curious about
the film. Since a unfamiliar actor
made the film and the poster more
original compared to any other
poster with regular/common actors
on them.
1. The combination of the main task and ancillary task was effective in
communicating to the audience the genre of the film Social Realism.
 We decided to make several
references to the actor Frank
Adams in the review to highlight
this further. The poster is
displayed on the review and the
actor’s names are displayed
underneath before the article
begins. Highlighting the
convention of armature actors
throughout the film poster and
review was effective in reflecting
the genre social realism and this
was important because the
audiences generally make their
decisions as to whether the film
may be suitable to them based of
the genre/style of film.
2. The combination of the main task and ancillary task was effective in Drawing in
the correct audience that we are targeting, through the continuity of a colour
scheme .
 A colour scheme wasn’t specifically chosen for the actual film itself, however after filming
the footage it was noticeable that there was a colour scheme of dull dark shades of blue
and red which generally occurred in the scenes of his apartment and in the pub. The dull
imagery/ colours were created though the lighting and poor quality of camera. The actual
colours of blue and red just happened to be incorporated into the film due to the choice of
location; for example the blue carpet at the flat and the red colour scheme at the pub; and
the use of props, for example the red labelling on alcohol bottles, pizza box, blood etc.
 So we decided that ensuring continuity of this colour scheme within the film poster and
review, the content and perhaps themes such as depression, could be reflected to the
audience prior to them watching the film. This would also be effective in drawing the
audience in by giving them an idea of what style of film it will be.

Dull blue bedding and
carpet in the flat
2. The combination of the main task and ancillary task was effective in Drawing in
the correct audience that we are targeting, through the continuity of a colour
scheme .
 The colour scheme for the film poster was chosen
through the analyzing of results gained from
a questionnaire about film posters. The majority of our
target audience said that they would prefer to a see dark
forest colour scheme on a film poster of the genres
Social Realism and Drama.
 We agreed that a dark colour scheme would represent
the grimy and torn settings within our film along with
the themes of depression. So to ensure continuity
between the film and the poster we decided to use the
dark colour scheme that the audience would prefer,
however instead of forest green colours, red would
complement the colours seen within the film.
 Brightening the redness of the lips on the main image
and having the title in red subtly reflected the films
subtle colour scheme, while the rest of the poster
remained dark.
 So although the majority of the poster is dark the
contrast of red pops out on the design making the title,
which is important, eye catching the audience, and this
would help in getting the attention of the audience and
drawing them in.
2. The combination of the main task and ancillary task was effective in Drawing in
the correct audience that we are targeting, through the continuity of a colour
scheme
 On the film review the same dull colour
scheme was used not only to compliment the
colours in the film and the poster, but also to
help focus the attention of the audience on
the main body of text. Frank Adams the
designer of the film review said in an
interview that the dull colour scheme was
used to make sure the audience doesn’t ‘get
distracted from the actual review which is
what matters.’ So in other words the colour
scheme was effective in drawing the
audience’s attention the content rather than
getting them distracted by a fancy or
overpowering design.
 So overall the continuity of the colour scheme
throughout the film, poster and review was
effective in reflecting the themes such as
depression, catching the eye of the audience
drawing them in and keeping them focused
on what’s important, whether it’s the title of
the film or the main article on a review.
