Coaching Outline
Coach Gina O'Neil Technical session on passing and receiving the ball
The size of the grid is dictated by the number of players involved and / or the type of passes
looking to be made; i.e. the smaller the grid, the shorter the passes. The larger the grid, the
longer the passes.
Perimeter players should be active on the sideline so as to best position themselves to receive
the ball.
Begin with one group passing and the other on the perimeter receiving, then switch.
Next, when the passing player passes the ball, they become the perimeter player and the
receiving player enters the grid.
Depending on the ability of the players, a one touch restriction can be placed on the perimeter
players.
Players in their own half of the grid pass the
balls (2). Another ball can be added to
heighten pressure and speed of play.
Players are first allowed to pass and receive in
the entire space, still restricted to passing
amongst their own colors. Next, add defenders
to apply pressure. If the defenders win the ball,
they are to look to pass to their respective
defensive teammate.
Passing combinations should be outlined by the coach, e.g. wall passes, double passes...
The weight of passes is key.
Passes made with the inside of the foot should have the foot locked in the letter "L".
Passing the ball with the inside of the foot as well as the outside of the foot is to be encouraged and used when appropriate.
Note various methods by which the ball can be received, e.g. inside of the foot bringing the ball across one's body, receiving it with the outside of the
foot away from one's body, let the ball go between one's legs, turn, and go, and soft touch in varying directions.
The addition of the defenders will now dictate the type of pass, when, and where. The receipt of the ball is dictated by the defensive presence / pressure.

Diagram Team Shape - Provide Field Dimensions Organization
The End Zone Game allows players the opportunity to play a game like activity
(Game Related) which features passing and receiving. A point is "scored" once a
successful pass is made to a teammate in the end zone. Once that takes place,
the ball is left in the end zone for the other team to quickly counter attack. The
game should be played either in a 4 v 4 (diamond) or 5 v 5 (diamond with a
central player) set up so as feature length and width in attack.
Depending on the skill level of the team, a two touch restriction can be
implemented.
Goalkeepers can be integrated here as well in that they execute ground scoop
type saves and bowl the ball when distributing.
At this point, the coaches primary concern is still the technical aspect of the game, but since technique effects tactics; the coach can indicate a technical
breakdown that attributed to the tactical breakdown.
Players off the ball should be moving so as to provide immediate support (2nd attacker) and those higher and wide (3rd attackers).
The team in possession must "read" the defensive players so as to execute the correct passing option.
Print Session Send to DatabaseEmail to NSCAA
In the Game Conditions, all restrictions are lifted and true soccer game is
featured. In the noted graphic, both teams are configured in a 1-3-2. In
attack, players are encouraged to maintain a diamond shape on the
strong side in particular as well as positioning themselves to offer 2nd and
3rd attacker options for the player with the ball (1st attacker).
Goalkeepers, when in possession are indeed 1st attackers.
Haver fun and play!
