4. Napoleon’s rise
1796: Named commander of French
forces in Italy.
1798: Conquerd Ottoman forces in
Egypt.
1800: Defeat Austrians at Marengo.
Napoleon was a very inept general
that had the respect of those he
commanded. He was feared just as
much as he was loved.
6. 1802: He made himself
first counsel.
1804: Makes himself
emperor.
1805: Battle of Austerlitz.
1808: Peninsular wars.
1812: Invades Russia.

10. Exiled to Elba in 1814. During
his nine-month stay he
declared himself emperor of
the island and set about
building roads, passing laws
and redesigning his residences.
13. News of Napoleon’s return created
quite a stir in Europe. Napoleon’s
enemies declared him an outlaw and
readied themselves for war.
Napoleon and his troops were
greatly outnumbered and defeat was
imminent. Waterloo lasted less than
12 hours on a Sunday afternoon.
The French were no match for the
British and Prussian forces.
