traditional religions or philosophies helped to shape our
understanding of and our conduct towards nature? Compare

General Questions - General General Questions
Week 1
The Connection between Nature and Spirit . Gottlieb asks,
“Of what value is nature?” Based on your reading of Part I,
“can we speak of love or mutual respect for a particular tree,
an endangered species, or an ecosystem?” Select at least two
writers from this section and analyze how their responses to
these questions may vary or agree with your own.
Perceiving Nature . In the Introduction, Gottlieb suggests that
there is both “good news and bad news” regarding the
environment. He states that how individuals view nature may
be influenced by their personal theology, philosophy, or
worldview. In your opinion, do we need religion or
philosophy to help us perceive the value of nature? Is religion
or philosophy essentially a “private matter of personal faith”
or is it a necessary prerequisite to create a community
response to an environmental crisis?
Week 2
Traditional Views of Nature . Based on your reading of Part II
2. of the textbook, how have traditional religions or
philosophies helped to shape our understanding of and our
conduct towards nature? Compare and contrast two
different views of nature.
Transforming Traditional Views . Gottlieb asks, “How has the
environmental crisis challenged and transformed modern
theology and spiritual practice?” Based on your reading of
Part III of the textbook, select at least two different views of
nature. In your opinion, has contemporary ecotheology
transformed traditional theological or philosophical
perspectives toward the environment? In your opinion, “will
this body of thought remain merely an intellectual construct?
Or will it, as in the case of the Civil Rights Movement, bring a
religiously inspired vision into critical social struggles?”
Final Project Proposal . Submit a written proposal for your
final project that includes the following:
a. An outline of the project written in paragraph form that
includes format, issues, and your potential message.
b. A preliminary annotated bibliography that includes at least
eight (8) sources. The annotated bibliography should include
a brief description of the contents of each selected source as
well as the title of the source, author, publisher, place and
date of publication in APA (6th ed.) format.
c. A minimum of three pages written in double-spaced type.
Include as much detail as possible to provide your instructor
with a complete understanding of your proposed final
project.
Week 3
Ecofeminism . Based on your reading of Part IV of the
textbook, how does the ecofeminist perspective view
humanity's spiritual relationship with the natural world? In
3. your opinion, will an ecofeminist perspective positively or
negatively affect society’s ability to address current
environmental concerns? What impact do you think
ecofeminism has on these contemporary environmental
debates?
Deep Ecology . Based on your reading of Part V of the
textbook, how would you define Spiritual Deep Ecology ?
How does this perspective affect our utilization of nature? In
your opinion, what influence does this perspective have on
contemporary environmental debates? Can individuals in
capitalist societies still be deep ecologists?
Final Project Draft: Research Paper . Submit a draft of your
Research Paper to the instructor. The draft should include a
minimum of three pages summarizing your progress as well
as the written notes supporting your project . Include enough
details to give your instructor a comprehensive picture of
your progress in completing and submitting your final
project. You will turn in a draft of the Creative Presentation in
Week Four.
Week 4
Environmental Racism . Read Environmental Racism: An
ecumenical study guide. What is your definition of
“environmental racism?” According to this document, what is
the relationship between the environment and the human
spirit? In your opinion, is environmental racism a reality that
governments must address, or it is an intellectual construct
without a basis in reality? Your initial post should be at least
250-300 words in length. Support your claims with examples
from
Sustainability . Visit Sustainable Supply Chain – About
McDonald’s and review McDonald’s Corporation corporate
4. policies related to “Sustainable Supply Chain,” “Resource
Conservation,” and “Environmental Responsibility.” Also,

In your opinion, should the public care that large
multinational corporations like McDonald’s are promoting
sustainable environmental practices? Why do you think
McDonalds would invest considerable resources in
sustainable programs? Should multinationals that promote
sustainable practices be praised for their leadership,
condemned for hypocrisy, or ignored because it does not
make a difference?
Final Project Draft: Creative Presentation . Submit a draft of
your Creative Presentation to the instructor. The draft should
include a minimum of a three pages summarizing your
progress as well as the written notes supporting your project

Global Warming . Read The Science of Climate Change and
Global Warming Basics. Also, watch An Inconvenient Truth .
In your opinion, is global warming fact or fiction? What
responsibility, if any, do individuals, corporations and/or
governments have regarding the world’s climate? Does
contemporary literature, music, art, or film reflect or create
an environmental ethic?
Environment and the Human Spirit . Throughout this course,
we have explored how nature writers, theologians,
philosophers, corporations, artists, and others have
responded to the complex relationships between people and
the world in which they live. As you reflect on this course,
explain how you view the relationship between the
5. environment and the human spirit. Support your discussion
with specific examples through your experiences or reference
citations.
Focus of the Final Project
There are two components to the Final Project:
1. Research Paper
2. Creative Presentation of the Research Paper
The author identifies eight areas of “acute” environmental
concern:
1. Global climate/atmospheric change
2. Toxic wastes
3. Loss of land
4. Loss of species
5. Loss of wilderness
6. Devastation of indigenous peoples
7. Human patterns and quantities of consumption
8. Genetic engineering
For this project, select one of these areas as your focus in
discussing the complex relationships between the
