Transforming food systems through clean energy access

International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI)

This is a presentation by senior researcher Susannah Fisher and researcher Brianna Craft of the Climate Change Group of the International Institute for Environment and Development. It examines how their work with national governments on measuring effective adaptation, developing indicators and trying to understand short and longer-term effectiveness can contribute to assessing progress towards the global adaptation goal established in the Paris Agreement. Fisher and Craft made the presentation at a joint OECD/IIED side event Identifying progress towards national and global adaptation goals at the Bonn climate change conference on May 18, 2016. The conference served as the 44th session of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change’s (UNFCCC) Subsidiary Body for Implementation (SBI 44) and Subsidiary Body for Scientific and Technological Advice (SBSTA 44), as well as the first session of the Ad Hoc Working Group on the Paris Agreement (APA 1). Presentation on The Multiple Benefits of Energy Efficiency: An overview by Nina Campbell, Databuild Research & Solutions at the Unlocking the energy Efficiency Opportunity report launch 2015. The seminar presented new insights including the scale of the energy efficiency opportunity; the costs and benefits of 2020 target achievement; and policy options based on a new analysis of investor behaviour and decision-making. The launch of the report was accompanied by presentations from exemplar projects from the SEAI energy efficiency programmes and a panel discussion exploring how we might accelerate the pace of retrofit in Ireland. New insights into the attitudes of investors was presented and the multiple benefits of energy efficiency explored.

Shift Health co-hosted a Product Development Boot Camp with the Global HIV Vaccine Enterprise. The Boot Camp afforded workshop participants an opportunity to discuss best practices, to learn from the experience of other experts and to create an enduring resource and toolkit that will serve the HIV vaccine field and beyond. Product development refers to the multifaceted, long-term, highly regulated process that brings promising new drugs, vaccines and medical devices to the populations who most need them. In fields such as HIV vaccine development, where the absence of commercial incentives can make it difficult for companies to lead this process on their own, inventors need to work in partnership with diverse stakeholders and funders to maximize the social and economic impact of their research. Ryan Wiley, PhD, President at Shift Health, delivered an overview of product development partnerships, which exhibit three common elements: Defined governance mechanisms that enable appropriate participation in decision-making Disciplined approach to communication among partners and with stakeholders IP policies that balance the needs of individual partners with the objectives of the partnership.
