  currency.
• Also used in religious rituals and offerings.
• Aztecs called cacao beverage „Xocolatl‟.
Spain Discovers Chocolate
• 1519 – Hernan Cortez arrived in South
  America.
• Montezuma welcomed him and offered
  him Xocolatl.
• 1529 – Cortez introduced chocolate drink
  to Spain.

  countries.
• Spain kept source of the drink a secret.
• Only wealthy could enjoy cocoa beverage.

  cocoa butter from ground cocoa beans.
