Notas del editor

Join this fun and fast-paced session to uncover some new and unknown business and research apps, as well as some apps that will surprise you and make you laugh out loud.
  2. My story of the motorcyclists
  3. How has my experience with apps changed? Power, etc. Apps have the ability to combine unique aspects of mobile: potentially combining location, direction, speed, image, information – being applied in banking, healthcare, other ways The power of combining information and the network is starting to emerge and grow very powerful in apps – as will (hopefully) be shown by the examples. The benefits to narrowing features on enterprise apps: http://readwrite.com/2013/09/12/enterprise-apps-sometimes-less-is-more#awesm=~ohkVPbAIefau6R “ In and out” nature of apps – pop in, do something, be done. This will look at apps, as well as some broader aspects of the mobile world. My goal, in addition to having some fun and showing you a lot of cool apps you should know about, is to also guide you through this shift in how we interact in the world and to make some sense of it.
  4. As in previous incarnations, I set these up as somewhat rough categories – many of these don’t necessarily fit neatly into one category. These have also changed and evolved a bit. I am also covering a few again – partly because I hope we have some folks on the phone who have not seen the presentation before, and they are simply worth repeating.

If you don’t like a certain topic bubble, you just flick it off the screen or wait for it to leave of its own accord—the bubbles gradually fade in and out of existence if you leave them. If you don’t like the page being suggested at the bottom, you swipe it down and another one appears. Tap one of the related topic bubbles and—if there are Web pages relating to both terms—the two bubbles will fuse into a white blob and new related topics will cluster around. So far I’ve managed to combine a maximum of three topics. Pages about Japanese robot fish, anyone? Not just that but Never see the same thing twice It gets better the more you use it

  20. iOS, Android – Free Enables you to share your screen mobilly, chat, phone.
  21. iOS, Free – crowdsourced diagnosis. While this may seem silly/unprofessional, this concept is getting increased traction for remote diagnosis, especially with the prevelance of mobile devices and smartphones. ‘ Figure 1 ’  is a new ‘Instagram-like’ photo app that allows medical professionals to share and identify images of diseases and injuries for medical purposes.  Created by  Movable Science, co-founder Joshua Landy described the app as “safe way to share medical images with the medical community, while protecting patients’ privacy”.  Before an image  can be uploaded, the poster will be given a consent form, which they would have to sign before the pictures goes up.  Users will also  be able to comment and search for pictures uploaded by other users, as well as learn about different ailments.  Since its  launch two weeks ago, a hundred over pictures—ranging from “rashes and spots” to “amputated, gangrenous foot a diabetes patient”—have been uploaded.  With the app , it allows doctors and even members of the public to seek help and identify certain conditions and diseases that they are unsure of.  The app  is currently free for download from the  iTunes Store .
  22. in private iOS beta. you can get access by signing in with your LinkedIn account credentials. The premise is simple: connect your social accounts and Refresh will create a dossier of things you should chit chat about. Like how I should mention to Whitson that I saw his post about playing way too many video games lately two and a half weeks ago (actual suggestion). If nothing else, this app highlights just how much of your personal life is readily available to third-party APIs. It’s kind of creepy:  http://lifehacker.com/refresh-provides-creepy-dossiers-on-people-to-avoid-awk-747081121 The idea behind the app is solid if you're trying to build your networking skills. Keeping notes about contacts and what's relevant to them is a time-honored tradition in the business world. However, be advised: blindly following the advice of an app that tells you to "ask her about baseball" because your friend clicked a Like button once on Facebook may hurt your networking skills just as much as it could help.
  23. “ Boyfriend tracker” app – was Android but removed from Google Play recently. Functions include sending the person doing the tracking updates on their partner's location and forwarding duplicates of text message traffic from the targeted phone. There is even a command that allows a user to force the target phone to silently call their own, like a pocket dial, so they can listen in on what the person is saying. Similar apps are marketed for smartphone users in other countries, including Europe and the U.S. To install Boyfriend Tracker, suspicious partners have to get their hands on their loved one's smartphones and upload the app. A free version leaves the app's icon visible on the target's phone, while a version that costs $2 a month masks the icon.
  24. Online mobile site. Using location-based networking site Foursquare, the app plots friend locations onto an “avoidance map” (powered by Google Maps) so that users can ensure that no one has any uncomfortable run-ins. The app even overlays green “safe distance” zones on the map to help users keep their distance in case someone changes location but forgets to check in. Interesting – I didn’t really experience anything with it.   Garner isn’t the only one thinking about using social networks to avoid people. At New York’s University of Rochester, a number of researchers, among them Adam Sadilek, created an app called Fount.in , which they claim can be used to forecast the future health of users with an astonishing 91% accuracy. In some ways, Fount.in is reminiscent of  Google Flu Trends , except that instead of analyzing troves of long-term data to predict seasonal patterns, Sadilek and his colleagues work in real time, by analyzing users’ Twitter messages.
  25. iOS, 99 cents claims to detect and message nearby ghosts and spirits by tracking "certain environmental elements" around your iPhone and "examining values within the device that a spirit should theoretically be able to manipulate.“ – then spits out words.
  26. iOS, Android, BB, Windows, Free. Discover the most popular local bars and beers wherever you go Share your beer reviews and photos with your friends Personalized beer suggestions help find your new favorite brew
  27. What’s striking in the productivity category is the simplification of tasks, and the integration of gesture (typically swipe) to make interacting with them easy.
  28. Office Mobile for iPhone' —as the app is called—will be available at Apple's app store for free. However, an Office 365 subscription is required for use. Has gotten pretty poor reviews so far. All documents  will sync with Microsoft's SkyDrive online storage service. Microsoft promises that users "will be able to pick up a Word document exactly where they left off on another computer", as long as it is tied to the same account.   The user's documents  will also be formatted to fit the iPhone screen and will, quite crucially, preserve the charts, animations, commits and other important document contents that other mobile world processing apps do not handle so well.   Despite these  assurances, the features on Office Mobile will not be directly on par with the same software on a computer, as it was designed for "lightweight editing".   Currently,  there is no iPad or Android version available.
  29. Android, free only mobile Office with full-features FREE. Support for running on Android 2.1 and above system. User-friendly & nice UI interface! 33. iOS, free Quickly swipe messages to your archive or trash. Scan an entire conversation at once with chat-like organization. Snooze emails until later with the tap of a button — they’ll return to your inbox automatically so you can focus on what's important now. Mailbox checks your email from the cloud, then delivers it to your phone securely. You can even get push notifications for new messages. Add all your GMail accounts for speedy access on-the-go. Mailbox will be an app  that will help you get more organized by allowing you to deal with what you need to worry about and what you don't need to worry about, at a glance.  The secret lies  in the app's full utilization of the swiping action to sort incoming and existing mail. A short swipe in the right direction will put things in an archive and a longer right-swipe will send things to the bin. A short swipe leftwards will put things into the right folders and a longer left swipe will 'snooze' that particular email.
  34. Available across pretty much all platforms, first year free, 99cents a year after NO HIDDEN COST: Once you and your friends download the application, you can use it to chat as much as you want. Send a million messages a day to your friends for free! WhatsApp uses your Internet connection: 3G/EDGE or Wi-Fi when available. * MULTIMEDIA: Send Video, Images, and Voice notes to your friends and contacts. * GROUP CHAT: Enjoy group conversations with your contacts. Add or Remove group participants, change group subject and set a group icon. * PERSONAL: Set a profile photo which will be shown to all your contacts * NO INTERNATIONAL CHARGES: Just like there is no added cost to send an international email, there is no cost to send WhatsApp messages internationally. Chat with your friends all over the world as long as they have WhatsApp Messenger installed and avoid those pesky international SMS costs. WhatsApp users can record voice snippets and send them to each other in a kind of audio telegram that may be more meaningful than the plain text messages and simple video sharing the app has served up until now. Simultaneously the app's makers have revealed that it  now has  300 million users worldwide--equating to about one in every 20-ish people on the planet. The new push-to-talk feature will roll out to all mobile app users quickly, and is said to have been a big goal for company cofounder Jan Koum for a long time. It's free to users, and the idea is that in circumstances where it's tricky to type, or where language constraints mean speech is swifter than typing, users can instead send a voicemail to their friends.

  43. iOS, 99 cents – OK, we don’t really need all those translation apps. Called ‘ Pivo ’ , it is an app that will teach users how to order beer in 59 different languages.  Created by  Justin Amey and Ollie Hepworth, the app was inspired by their frustration when they were abroad and couldn’t order a beer in Czech.  “We landed  in Prague and headed straight to the nearest bar,” wrote the developers. “After catching the attention of the barmaid, we realized neither of us knew how to order a beer in Czech! We googled it, nothing, we asked Jeeves and even he didn’t know! So we thought there must be an app for that but there wasn’t…Pivo was born.”  There are  59 different languages programmed into the app, which includes the “correct spelling” and “phonetic pronunciations” of the words.  The best part  of it is that users don’t need a WiFi connection to access the video tutorials.  ‘Pivo’  is currently available from the  iTunes Store  at US$0.99.  http://designtaxi.com/news/359943/App-Teaches-Users-How-To-Order-Beer-In-59-Different-Languages/

You can browse through different photo filters, shapes and write or draw directly on top of photos with Wacom’s powerful inking tools. Share your creation on a variety of social media – or for a more personal touch, directly to a friend
  48. Not an app – uses your Twitter account to authorize, then your time hashtags become active. If plugged-in life has taught us anything, it's that no tweet goes  unnoticed . That is, unless you program your tweets to self-destruct. Pierre Legrain , a former  Twitter  employee, has created  Spirit , an app that lets you do just that. Think of it as a  Snapchat  for tweets. Once you authorize Spirit to access your Twitter account, you can use  hashtags  to specify how long you want a tweet to stay live before self-destructing (a tweet using the #3m hashtag, for example, would disappear in three minutes). One demographic that might not be too happy about an app that lets users set their tweets to disappear forever: Twitter's advertisers. After all, it's hard to clearly measure the impact of, say, a Promoted Tweet if the retweets it garners no longer exist.
  49. Foursquare update: automatic detection, suggestions   http://bits.blogs.nytimes.com/2013/08/29/with-new-app-foursquare-strives-to-be-magic-in-your-pocket/?smid=fb-share&_r=1     serve up its recommendations automatically, no check-in required. On Thursday, the New York company plans to announce the first public test of a new version of its service that will automatically detect what restaurant or neighborhood a user is in and make suggestions accordingly. The new app, which has no official name, will be given to about 2,000 Android users in the next few weeks and rolled out broadly later this year. “ What we’re launching here is this smarter version of Foursquare that can sense where you are and give you the best recommendations,” said Dennis Crowley, Foursquare’s co-founder and chief executive, in an interview. He said it would be as if you got all of the advice from all of your friends, shrunk down into a single voice that whispers the most relevant information, unbidden, as you walk by. As an example, he said that when he visited  Mo’z Cafe  in San Francisco on Wednesday morning, the new app “told me the thing people talk about here are the breakfast burritos and this particular type of iced coffee.” No need to open the app, search for the cafe and check in to tell the service where he was.
  50. his application tracks your fitness goals (e.g. "visit the gym 3 times a week") and sends a shameful message to your social media contacts if you slack off. Gym visits are recorded via Foursquare check-ins, while Facebook and Twitter integration maximize the full reach of your potential "embarrassing, degrading, and insulting" shame. I was too afraid to sign in.

  61. iOS, android, Free  Ikea has developed a killer app for AR. After using any smartphone or tablet to scan select pages out of its 2014 catalog, you can place the catalog anywhere in your home to make it appear as if it’s an actual piece of furniture. Watch the video above to see what we mean. Technically, this is no more amazing than any other AR app to date. But every part of the actual use-case scenario makes sense. Consider the experience: You’re already reading this catalog. You come across something you like. Then, assuming your phone is nearby, the hardest thing you have to do is drop the book somewhere in your home--a satisfying tactile process that beats pinching and zooming on a glass screen. There are no stickers to tear out or cards to print. Every component of the experience is already integrated.
  62. iOS, Android, free The app  has various “cinewalks”, allowing the user to discover each and every film location of a specific movie just by following these geotargeted spots on the map.  Users  can also submit their own take of a film shot in Paris, just for fun.  Available in  English, French and German

That is because it noticed an OpenTable e-mail in your Gmail in-box, knows your location from your phone’s GPS and checked Google Maps for traffic conditions. Ask aloud that Google Now remind you to pick up milk next time you step in a grocery store, and an alert will appear when you are at Safeway. First time I used it it was kind of creepy. And that was without web search history turned on.

  68. iPhone , free http://www.fastcompany.com/3015413/an-app-to-help-parents-conceive?partner=newsletter Glow. Founded along with PayPal cofounder Max Levchin, Glow is an iPhone app designed to "crunch the data [that] better informs women of their fertility window." By tracking data from its users and community, and offering personalized recommendations and statistics, the founders of Glow believe they've built a smarter process for assisting women and couples attempting to conceive children. But perhaps more compelling than the company's app is its Glow First service, a novel, pay-it-forward-type alternative to traditional health care. Levchin says the manual data entry isn't ideal, and promises that it will become more streamlined and perhaps automated in the future, as wearable devices that measure body temperature and other metrics become less expensive and more mainstream. (He also stresses the stringent privacy measures put in place, contending his background in the financial services space made the program more secure than protecting your credit card information.)
