2. CRITICAL THINKING IN THE
MANAGEMENT CLASSROOM
•Has been argued to be crucial for management
education (Cunliffe, 2004; Smith, 2014; Welsh
& Dehler, 2013)
•students cannot just take reality as it first
appears
•need to critically examine the nature of reality
and own actions
3. MY CLASS CONTEXT
•OLS 37500- Training Methods
•Teach students about how to design and
run training programs in organizational
settings
•Understand general principles of training
and running a training program
•Need to consider impact of elements
and work environment
4. TRAIN THE TRAINER TRAINING
•Train-the-trainer programs are designed to
introduce new and experienced trainers to fresh
methods for effective training
•Get the trainer prepared to effectively give the
training
•Have been shown to help effectiveness
(Baron-Donovan et al., 2005; Reivich, Seligman
& McBride, 2011)
5. FOCUS OF CLASS PERIOD
•Help students understand why we might do
train the trainer programs
•Really consider the issue of what makes
someone an effective trainer
•This is done by watching 2 actual train the
trainer type videos and critically
examining their effectiveness
6. TRAIN THE TRAINER EXAMPLE
•Toastmasters International
•http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vuzRANoefpw
•(Other video used https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5E5Rm76UUIA)
7. POST VIEWING DISCUSSION
•Usually free form with topics that arise
•What was effective or ineffective?
•What makes someone an effective trainer?
•Is trainer experienced and knows material?
•How might we parcel credit/blame for
training content on trainer vs. developer?
•Students consider what is a good trainer and
recognize errors that can take place
8. POTENTIAL APPLICATIONS IN OTHER
CLASSES
•Watch a video about an organization strategy
and discuss its strengths and weaknesses
•Watch example of leader dealing with an issue
and discuss how effective the solution was
•More in depth video case studies or analysis
possible
9. PITFALLS AND ISSUES FOR CLASS
•Are we learning or just making fun?
•Keeping on point
•Make sure right lessons
•Not being critical just to be
critical
10. QUESTIONS & DISCUSSION
• How do you help students develop critical thinking
skills?
