“Having the winning idea means nothing
without being able to share it with someone
else” Dan Roam
The focus of our day is on Visual Literacy. There will be overlaps between video, imagery and presentation in general.
The goal today is to begin to establish some guidelines and ideas to support your move to a more visual classroom and even before that, make the case for a more visually diverse learning environment
I’m going to talk about some big ideas as well as some practical, specific tips.
Feel free to view the day from a number of lenses:
-Student,Teacher,learner
-Hope to stretch your thinking, challenge you but provide some entry points
What do you think of when you hear the word design?

Things can be functional and beautiful
These are inextricably linked.

It’s about computers and technology

Design should be front and center in our planning. It’s not just about the cake. Design is inextricably tied to content.
Teach the basics of photography and videography
Lots of resources online
Connect ideas of visual to written
A shot=Sentence
A sequence=Paragraph
We are text snobs and always have been.
Pictographs were seen as less sophisticated when in reality offered at least as much information, if not more. They often were much better at expressing emotion
My family were archivists. Capturing special events, birthdays, vacations, graduations.
Paula’s father was a photographer capturing those events as well as their lives
Today we are all photographers.
Cheap failure
You can be your own photographer but now we can share in each other’s love for images.

Every minute 20 hours of video are uploaded to youtube.
28,000
Less than 30 years of broadcasting for the 3 major networks pre Cable TV.
More than ever, this should lead us to spend more time teaching good writing and design.
How many of you have students turning to youtube for learning?

Storytelling
Teaching
This is not just for teachers but for students. Anyone presenting ideas or telling a story.
With a digital projector waiting back in my classroom, I can't help looking for interesting, relevant images to put in front of my class.
A digital projector shrinks the time-gap between my learning moment and theirs.
A digital projector has effectively buried the difference between What Fascinates Me and What I Teach.
These elements are applicable to almost anything we create
Students should have some understanding of these elements and build upon these principles as they create more content.
Presentation Zen
This speaks to the concept that we need good content first, visuals can help but without a compelling ideas, visuals won’t save you.
We need to sometimes get down to the core of our ideas. Often software and technology gets in the way. Be purposeful in our planning.
Whitespace or Negative space
Our tendency is to fill up space with more text and graphics. Whitespace allows for focus and emphasis. Rests in music and pauses in speech can be extremely powerful.
Wait time is another great example of whitespace.
Classic example here of whitespace in design
Boundaries can be helpful and often can generate more creativity than open ended assignments
Most assignments are too long.
No video over 3 minutes.
No presentation over 5.
Eliminating unnecessary content so take high priority.
Bad font choice, size and color
What size font do you think that is? 30
What size is this? 115
PPT is not good or bad.
Continue to ask what do I need the “stuff” to do, as much a what can the “stuff” do for me. We’ve become victims of our technology.
Notes on the screen are for you, not your audience.
Staring at the screen and unreadable text.
Your visuals support your story. They aren’t your story. Otherwise send them the PPT and sit down.
Seth Godin
Sometimes this is a leap for us. We aren’t sure how this relates to all our work. But what we design/present should require a response
Research shows that there is actually reduced retention when you read the text on the screen to your audience.

Don’t be afraid. Let’s look at some specifics related to slidedecks.
