NFL's first Super Bowl app is only for those in the stadium on game day
If you're headed to Super Bowl XLIX in Phoenix this year, you're probably not thinking about the TV
commercials you'll miss. But the NFL rolled out its first ever Super Bowl in-stadium app on Monday that
will allow ticketholders to experience the game just like those watching back home on the couch.
The Super Bowl Stadium App, born out of an NFL partnership with Verizon, will give game day attendees
within the University of Phoenix Stadium stadium in Glendale, Arizona, the ability to watch commercials
and instant replays from four different camera angles (zoom and pause capabilities too) and access the
venue's seating and concession maps.
The app, available for download now for Windows, iOS, Android smartphones, works with geo-fencing
beacons, which are tiny sensors that use Bluetooth technology to detect smartphones. When the beacons
sense a smartphone, the app can send tailored information to those only nearby— in this case, the
stadium walls.
"If you download the app from home and you're not at the stadium, it won't work," Michelle McKenna-
Doyle, the chief information officer for the NFL, told Mashable. "It's based on several other apps already
being used by football clubs at their home stadiums and is a part of a larger effort by the league to
incorporate technology into the fan experience and other parts of the game." It's also an extension of the
league's year-round NFL Mobile app, a hub for live streaming, real-time scores and related tweets, photos
and stats (like speed, distance traveled and acceleration on the field).
