Recently this week, we ve been discussing perception and how it impacts the way we
communicate in our daily lives. Interestingly enough, this episode of COMMPENDIUM hosted
by Professor Stephen Stifano focused on this subject and its attributes. Our guest star featured is
Sara Picklesimer, a University of Louisville graduate and now currently a doctoral student at the
University of Connecticut in the field of communication. She was born in Pinesville, Kentucky,
and started off as a biology major before realizing her passion was communication after taking her
first public speaking course. Despite being a shy and reserved individual, Ms. Picklesimer found
that she actually enjoyed and was surprisingly good at this field. She now teaches a gender and
communication course here at the University of Connecticut, which ties in gender through music
and a variety of other aspects in relation to communication. She gives us her expert lecture on two
primary topics related to perception: thin slicing and the impact and effect of gender on the ways in
which we communicate.
Professor Stifano mentioned some of the foundations of perception that we have discussed in our
lecture, including selective attention and perceptual filters. The other aspects revealed in this
podcast are thin slicing and gender. All of these elements tie into each other in terms of
communicating effectively and making decisions, and what make up perception. We learned that

Reflection On Dance
I am very glad that I was able to take dance composition this quarter. From the first few classes, I
knew that this class would be what I looked forward to most. Reflecting back, there were so many
times when I would run up to my friends at home after class and tell them about the mind blowing
things that happened in composition that day. What ensued during class time was always a fun and
exciting dinner conversation topic. The first assignment of free writing then crossing everything out
was a refreshing start to the quarter. The act of trashing what I just put effort into was a feeling I do
not think I have experienced before that moment. It made me reflect about attachment, even to
things that were very insignificant, considering what I free wrote about was very unimportant.
Detaching myself from my choreographyis one of the big ideas that I am taking away from this
class. What makes what I created so important? Making movement looking forward, I will
always think back to this and will try my best to be open to discarding things more easily. One of
my favorite classes was the slow motion walk day. I did not know what to expect at all. I thoughtI

Ever since c. 17th century, musical compositions have manipulated the standard aspects of music,
which include rhythm and melody. More importantly, many musical compositions have
incorporated complex math within, for examples again, melodies and rhythms that create a

in general, harmony, is where a fairly complex mathematical formula is involved: the harmonic

Jimmy had been troubled throughout his life especially during his childhood. His parents didn t
love him; his teachers didn t think much of him, and the girl of his dreams was involved in child

One cannot run from hardships, for they occur every day, appear suddenly, and can quickly
consume hope. Instead one must face these difficulties and overcome them. However, to rise above
obstacles alone would only cause further misery and despair. The struggler s family should rally
behind him to comfort and assist him in his time of need. In Cry, the Beloved Country, a 1948
contemporary novel, Alan Paton uses parallelism to emphasize the importance of family because
when individuals encounter hardships they need support from others to help them.
Primarily, tribal families encourage those who suffer with kind words and actions. Stephen Kumalo,
a man filled with pain and suffering , speaks of the hope he receives from others when he says,
There is my wife, and you, my friend, and these people who welcomed me, and the child who is
so eager to be with us here in Ndotsheni so in my suffering I can believe (261). Paton uses the
parallel structure polysyndeton to show how many people from one s family will go out of their
way to lift one s spirits and renew one s faith in God. Cry, the Beloved Country shows readers that
even in difficult times one can find family eager to provide solace to those in need. Whenever there
comes trouble, one can always count on family to rekindle lost hope.
