La leyenda de la caja de Pandora narra cómo Zeus castigó a los hermanos Prometeo y Epimeteo por enseñarle a la humanidad a hacer fuego. Zeus hizo que Hefesto modelara a una hermosa mujer llamada Pandora para que Epimeteo se enamorara de ella. Como regalo de bodas, Zeus les dio una caja que les advirtió que nunca debían abrir. Pandora no pudo resistir la curiosidad y abrió la caja, dejando escapar todas las desgracias del mundo. Solo quedó dentro la esperanza.
