A thought ... Ideas in this presentation won’t be suitable for everyone, so only consider ones that suit your event & venue There’s no such thing as a bad idea: hate an idea? Build on it – how could you tweak it for your event? Change the tone to fit your event Prepared by Claire Thompson, Waves PR, for Twestival fundraisers March 2010 with thanks to teams for sharing their learning (claire@wavespr.com; t: +44(0) 118 944 0394) 2
raffle 3 Prepared by Claire Thompson, Waves PR, for Twestival fundraisers, August 2009 with thanks to teams for sharing their learning (claire@wavespr.com; t: +44(0) 118 944 0394)
food, drink, play things always go down well services: a visit from a poet, a house clean, teaching people how to... goodies from the band, the venue, the charity what’s local: cinema, theatre, national park? Ask for tickets gyms and hotels are great because there is little extra cost in donating use of high value facilities – a promotional opportunity for them restaurants, spas, beauty parlours many council run facilities like swimming pools have allocations of tickets for charities Body Shop, Lush, etc have always been generous with us things for the raffle tips 4 Prepared by Claire Thompson, Waves PR, for Twestival fundraisers, March 2010, with thanks to teams for sharing their learning (claire@wavespr.com; t: +44(0) 118 944 0394)
raffles – staying legal you will not need a licence for a raffle for a one-off event provided that: tickets are only be sold during the event (not in advance) there are no cash prizes to come from the ticket money no more than £250 is spent on the prizes (donated prizes do not count) tickets must not be more than £1 each the result of the raffle must be drawn at the event. tip agree in advance what will happen if committee members win raffle prizes tips 5 Prepared by Claire Thompson, Waves PR, for Twestival fundraisers, April 2010with thanks to teams for sharing their learning (claire@wavespr.com; t: +44(0) 118 944 0394)
raffle prize ideas could local sports venues offer 1-2-1 training eg tennis as a prize; football clubs may donate gear – or even send along a player anything original – artwork, jewellery, signed books pics, CDs, trip backstage at a theatre or concert, tour of local radio or TV station would your local MP agree to be a slave for the day? Or go into ‘stocks’ pubs, clubs, local limo companies local celebrity donations eg Kate Winslett’s mum’s pickles; Jordan’s bridal veil; Uri Geller’s bent spoon (they may even turn up for you!) think local – magazine subs, organic food or drink deliveries 6 Prepared by Claire Thompson, Waves PR, for Twestival fundraisers, March 2010, with thanks to teams for sharing their learning (claire@wavespr.com; t: +44(0) 118 944 0394)
activities 7 Prepared by Claire Thompson, Waves PR, for Twestival fundraisers, March 2010, with thanks to teams for sharing their learning (claire@wavespr.com; t: +44(0) 118 944 0394)
activities can a local DJ or radio presenter MC for you for the night? could a local auction house provide an auctioneer? The guys in Scotland are holding a human auction – could you adapt for your event? Easter egg hunt – get 50 squares on a piece of paper – charge £1 a square, with an Easter egg as the winning prize for the square that gets chosen Challenge on the night – eg if we raise £50 extra the organising committee will do a rendition of ...; x will shave have their head shaved/hairy chest waxed; the band will play x (works well if you ask a heavy rock band to play a Cliff Richard song, or vice versa) And Edinburgh’s fishing ducks for prizes 8 Prepared by Claire Thompson, Waves PR, for Twestival fundraisers, March 2010, with thanks to teams for sharing their learning (claire@wavespr.com; t: +44(0) 118 944 0394)
Games Charge to enter/play: Dry biscuit race – water biscuits, who can eat the most in a minute (make a song & dance about the rules, & have water available!) Popcorn race – one person lies on floor while partner has to hoover popcorn that’s been spread over them, with prize for winning team Balloon popping – people have to sit on a balloon on a chair and the first one to pop their balloon by bumping up & down on them. For a real challenge, ill the balloon with helium & allow sponsorship of them! Donkey race – line up ‘donkeys’ (people on hands & knees – you can even make the ears) & jockeys to race (make sure you warn people about safety; don’t want injuries!) – or toys on strings that people have to reel in Casino table Prepared by Claire Thompson, Waves PR, for Twestival fundraisers, March 2010 with thanks to teams for sharing their learning (claire@wavespr.com; t: +44(0) 118 944 0394) 9
Games/2 Charge to enter: Pagan tree – sell cards for people to write Twestival messages for Concern and tie with Twestival coloured ribbons to a plant or tree at venue (forward to Concern afterwards/take pics & share) quiz or test skittles Prepared by Claire Thompson, Waves PR, for Twestival fundraisers, March 2010 with thanks to teams for sharing their learning (claire@wavespr.com; t: +44(0) 118 944 0394) 10
Sell services 11 Prepared by Claire Thompson, Waves PR, for Twestival fundraisers, March 2010, with thanks to teams for sharing their learning (claire@wavespr.com; t: +44(0) 118 944 0394)
Work with the bar/venue Would they let you sell food ? Chocolate fountain cookies/cupcakes? If not, could they do two special Twestival dishes where set amount of price goes back to Twestival Could your venue create a drink just for you? Ask them to create a Twestival cocktail or flavoured beer where £1 of price goes straight back to your Twestival – it works for the bar as they know they’ll sell more of these 12 Prepared by Claire Thompson, Waves PR, for Twestival fundraisers, March 2010, with thanks to teams for sharing their learning (claire@wavespr.com; t: +44(0) 118 944 0394)
What might people pay for on the night? Ask providers of services to donate time in exchange for the publicity/relationships: Craft table; make an Easter bonnet? Head massage Tarot or palm reading For the girls: makeover or nail bar Careful who you ask to do this one: a hug stall, or kiss stall Swearbox or ‘dirty word’ box eg anyone who mentions work gets fines. (Make the fine small, though, and keep an eye to ensure it doesn’t result in uncomfortable coercion) Professional photography 13 Prepared by Claire Thompson, Waves PR, for Twestival fundraisers, March 2010, with thanks to teams for sharing their learning (claire@wavespr.com; t: +44(0) 118 944 0394)
Begging bowls 14 Prepared by Claire Thompson, Waves PR, for Twestival fundraisers, March 2010, with thanks to teams for sharing their learning (claire@wavespr.com; t: +44(0) 118 944 0394)
Get people to donate Provide a bucket for collections: Have it by the door as people arrive & leave for change donations Can someone speak about Concern whilst the bucket goes round? (Put £10 & some change in the bottom to set the tone) Or show a Concern video Send it round during highlights like a band playing or speaker talking Don’t let the band play until you’ve raised and extra £x (with care, as they’ve paid for tickets in advance) 15 Prepared by Claire Thompson, Waves PR, for Twestival fundraisers, March 2010, with thanks to teams for sharing their learning (claire@wavespr.com; t: +44(0) 118 944 0394)
