They began aggressively expanding their armed forces and invading other nations, with little resistance from the League of Nations. In 1936, Germany, Italy, and Japan formalized their alliance against the increasing threat of war by forming the Axis alliance. Britain and France hoped to appease the Axis nations to prevent war, but Hitler continued invading nations unopposed until invading Poland in 1939, marking the official start of World War II.

The Third Estate paid the majority of taxes but had little political power, as the Estates General legislative body gave each estate only one vote, favoring the interests of the First and Second Estates. Inspired by Enlightenment ideas and the success of the American Revolution, the French people began questioning why their absolute monarchy could not establish a more representative government like the one created in America.
South america revolutions
The Enlightenment ideals of revolution spread from Europe to South America in the early 19th century. Inspired nationalist leaders like Simon Bolivar and Jose de San Martin led independence movements against Spanish rule across South America. Bolivar succeeded in liberating Venezuela, while San Martin helped free Argentina and Chile. The two generals then joined forces to win independence for Peru. Bolivar dreamed of uniting the new South American nations into a single country called Gran Colombia, but political issues soon caused the countries to separate again.
Haitian independence
Haiti was a wealthy French colony due to sugar cane production and had a large slave population who lived under harsh conditions. In 1791, a slave rebellion led by Toussaint L'Ouverture began fighting for freedom and within 10 years had freed Haiti from French control and emancipated all the slaves. However, in 1802 France sent soldiers to regain control and captured L'Ouverture, imprisoning him in France where he died. Despite this setback, France was unable to defeat the rebellion and Haiti declared independence, becoming the only successful slave revolt in history.

Seminar led by Dr. Xavier de la Cruz, ICREA Research Professor. Head of the Translational Bioinformatics in Neuroscience group of VHIR, at VHIR (22nd November 2012).
Content: The need to identify the pathological character of mutations may arise in different contexts in biomedical research. However, the methods available to address this problem essentially depend on the number of cases under analysis. When we work with only a few mutations we can use an artisan-like approach, where all information available on protein sequence, structure and function is manually retrieved and studied. However, when we need to characterize many variants, as can be the case in exome projects, faster methods are required to assess their pathogenicity. In my talk I will illustrate the principles underlying these two approaches with examples from the study of Fabry disease mutations, resulting from our collaborative work at the VHIR.Evolving Beyond the Data Lake: A Story of Wind and Rain
