Mental health has been in the news quite a bit lately. Dozens of U.S. states are currently suing Meta for contributing to the youth mental health crisis by inserting addictive features into their products, while the U.S. Surgeon General is touring the nation to bring awareness to the growing epidemic of loneliness and isolation. The country has endured periods of low national morale, such as in the 1970s when high inflation and the energy crisis worsened public sentiment following the Vietnam War. The current mood, however, feels different. Gallup recently reported that national mental health is at an all-time low, with few bright spots to lift spirits.
To better understand how Americans are feeling and their attitudes towards mental health in general, ThinkNow conducted a nationally representative quantitative survey of 1,500 respondents and found some interesting differences among ethnic, age and gender groups.
Technology
For example, 52% agree that technology and social media have a negative impact on mental health, but when broken out by race, 61% of Whites felt technology had a negative effect, and only 48% of Hispanics thought it did.
While technology has helped us keep in touch with friends and family in faraway places, it appears to have degraded our ability to connect in person. Staying connected online is a double-edged sword since the same news feed that brings us pictures of the grandkids and fluffy kittens also feeds us news about the wars in Israel and Ukraine, the dysfunction in Washington, the latest mass shooting and the climate crisis.
Hispanics may have a built-in defense against the isolation technology breeds, owing to their large, multigenerational households, strong social support systems, and tendency to use social media to stay connected with relatives abroad.
Age and Gender
When asked how individuals rate their mental health, men rate it higher than women by 11 percentage points, and Baby Boomers rank it highest at 83%, saying it’s good or excellent vs. 57% of Gen Z saying the same.
Gen Z spends the most amount of time on social media, so the notion that social media negatively affects mental health appears to be correlated. Unfortunately, Gen Z is also the generation that’s least comfortable discussing mental health concerns with healthcare professionals. Only 40% of them state they’re comfortable discussing their issues with a professional compared to 60% of Millennials and 65% of Boomers.
Race Affects Attitudes
As seen in previous research conducted by ThinkNow, Asian Americans lag other groups when it comes to awareness of mental health issues. Twenty-four percent of Asian Americans believe that having a mental health issue is a sign of weakness compared to the 16% average for all groups. Asians are also considerably less likely to be aware of mental health services in their communities (42% vs. 55%) and most likely to seek out information on social media (51% vs. 35%).

La Ciudad Deportiva Joan Gamper tiene en La Masía-Centro
de Formación Oriol Tort una residencia única, por sus usos y
por su singularidad arquitectónica
La nueva Masia está ubicada en Sant Joan Despí. | ÁLEX CAPARRÓS - FCB
La nueva Masia, inaugurada el 20 deoctubrede 2011, es una construcción quese
caracteriza por su funcionalidad, la comodidad para sus residentes y por ser un
edificio con capacidad decrecimiento en función delas necesidades del Club.
Cuenta con unas instalaciones inmejorables, pensadasexclusivamentepara
optimizar la formación intelectual, personal y social delos deportistas. Todo ello sin
olvidar en mantener el calor y la cercanía humana entrelos residentes, los
educadores y el personal queforma partedel Club y que tan buenos resultados ha
dado.
El edificio tiene una superficieconstruida decasi 6.000 metros cuadrados,
distribuidos en cinco plantas, tres delas cuales sedestinan a la cantera y dos se
reservan para usos futuros. Las obras tuvieron una duración de19 meses
(diciembre2009- julio 2011).
2. El costede construcción del edificio fuede 8,8 millones deeuros que, sumados a
los costes delas licencias, los arquitectos y delos equipamientos, llegó a alrededor
de 11 millones deeuros.
Hasta la construcción dela nueva Masía, el Club acogía 60 deportistas dela baseen
las instalaciones dela Masía, distribuidosentrela antigua Masía deCan Planes (12
residentes), y los espacios habilitados en el Gol Nortedel Camp Nou (48
residentes). Ahora, la nueva Masia tieneuna capacidad para 83 deportistas.
Las habitaciones están distribuidasen dos plantas -la primera y la segunda- y tienen
capacidad para 4 y 2 residentes, y también sereservan para uso individual. En cada
habitación, cada residentetiene su cama, un armario, un baño equipado y una
mesa para estudiar. Algunas deestas habitaciones cuentan con camas especiales
para los deportistas demás altura, como los debaloncesto y balonmano basee,
incluso, habrá adaptados para usarlos para rehabilitar físicamentea los jugadores.
La funcionalidad y la racionalidad son dos conceptos básicospara definir la nueva
Masia. Un ejemplo es la planta baja de la nueva residencia, dondese integra la
cocina, el comedor con 'self-service', los despachos para la administración, las aulas
de refuerzo y el espacio de recreo y ocio para los residentes. De esta manera, no
sólo semejoran las condiciones delos deportistas, sino también las condiciones de
trabajo para los que cuidan a los residentes. Cocineros, personal deadministración
y los máximos responsables dela Masía podrán disfrutar demejores instalaciones
para desarrollar sus tareas, sin perder nunca el espíritu familiar.
La antigua Masia, de 1979 a 2011
Antes deeste nuevo edificio en Sant Joan Despí había funcionado como centro
formador la antigua Masía, ubicada junto al Camp Nou. Esta emblemática
edificación, que forma partedel patrimonio ehistoria del FC Barcelona, es una
antigua residencia payesa construida en 1702. En un primer momento, esta
primera Masía seusó como taller para la confección de la maqueta y sala de
trabajo de arquitectos y constructores, así como puntodepartida delas visitas de
otras personalidades y asociados a las obras deconstrucción.
Una vez inaugurado el Camp Nou, el 24 de septiembrede1957, La Masía cerró sus
puertas esperando un destino. En el período presidencial deEnric Llaudet este
edificio se remodeló y al mismo tiempo amplió para albergar la sedesocial del Club,
que dejaba la Via Laietana para trasladarseal lado del Camp Nou.
3. La nueva sede social fueinaugurada el 26 de septiembrede1966. El augedel club y
la creación de varias secretarías determinó quela Masia no tuviera cabida
suficientecomo sedesocial, que nuevamentefuetrasladada por la directiva de
Agustí Montal, ahora junto a la Pista deHielo. De estemodo, La Masía quedaba
otra vez disponiblepara un nuevo servicio. El consejo directivo deJosep Lluís
Núñez, sin embargo, le sacó rendimiento rápidamente. La Masía seconvertiría en
la residencia de los jóvenes jugadores con domicilio alejado denuestra ciudad. Las
obras deadecuación seefectuaron con mucha rapidez y el 20 de octubrede 1979
se inauguraba oficialmentepara su nuevo uso. El edificio dela Masía ubicado al
lado del Camp Nou dejó de ser centro formador en 2011, año en el que seinauguró
la nueva Masia, el Centro de Formación Oriol Tort, en la Ciudad Deportiva de Sant
Joan Despí.
