Mental health has been in the news quite a bit lately. Dozens of U.S. states are currently suing Meta for contributing to the youth mental health crisis by inserting addictive features into their products, while the U.S. Surgeon General is touring the nation to bring awareness to the growing epidemic of loneliness and isolation. The country has endured periods of low national morale, such as in the 1970s when high inflation and the energy crisis worsened public sentiment following the Vietnam War. The current mood, however, feels different. Gallup recently reported that national mental health is at an all-time low, with few bright spots to lift spirits.
To better understand how Americans are feeling and their attitudes towards mental health in general, ThinkNow conducted a nationally representative quantitative survey of 1,500 respondents and found some interesting differences among ethnic, age and gender groups.
Technology
For example, 52% agree that technology and social media have a negative impact on mental health, but when broken out by race, 61% of Whites felt technology had a negative effect, and only 48% of Hispanics thought it did.
While technology has helped us keep in touch with friends and family in faraway places, it appears to have degraded our ability to connect in person. Staying connected online is a double-edged sword since the same news feed that brings us pictures of the grandkids and fluffy kittens also feeds us news about the wars in Israel and Ukraine, the dysfunction in Washington, the latest mass shooting and the climate crisis.
Hispanics may have a built-in defense against the isolation technology breeds, owing to their large, multigenerational households, strong social support systems, and tendency to use social media to stay connected with relatives abroad.
Age and Gender
When asked how individuals rate their mental health, men rate it higher than women by 11 percentage points, and Baby Boomers rank it highest at 83%, saying it’s good or excellent vs. 57% of Gen Z saying the same.
Gen Z spends the most amount of time on social media, so the notion that social media negatively affects mental health appears to be correlated. Unfortunately, Gen Z is also the generation that’s least comfortable discussing mental health concerns with healthcare professionals. Only 40% of them state they’re comfortable discussing their issues with a professional compared to 60% of Millennials and 65% of Boomers.
Race Affects Attitudes
As seen in previous research conducted by ThinkNow, Asian Americans lag other groups when it comes to awareness of mental health issues. Twenty-four percent of Asian Americans believe that having a mental health issue is a sign of weakness compared to the 16% average for all groups. Asians are also considerably less likely to be aware of mental health services in their communities (42% vs. 55%) and most likely to seek out information on social media (51% vs. 35%).

Aunque los ordenadores se han empleado en tareas educativas prácticamente desde su aparición a mediados del siglo XX, ha sido a partir de la generalización de Internet cuando se ha producido una revolución del impacto real de Internet y las TIC en la Educación . Los principales participantes en el proceso de enseñanza mediante la web (e-learning) son: Profesores o tutores , cambia su papel principal que pasa a ser más un dinamizador y supervisor que un transmisor de conocimiento Alumnos , ahora son los participantes centrales. Papel activo que requiere mayores capacidades de autoaprendizaje Proveedores de contenido educativo (los propios profesores, empresas privadas, administraciones publicas) Administradores, responsables de la gestión y administración de los sistemas y plataformas: Los sistemas e-learning involucrados son básicamente 2: el LMS (Learning Management System) para el acceso web a los gestiondos y gestión y comunicación de los recursos son: el LCMS (Learning Content Management System) para crear, almacenar y gestionar los contenidos por parte de los creadores de contenidos. Ambos tienden a fusionarse en plataformas educativas que resuelven toda la gestión relacionada con el aprendizaje via web.
Además de las ventajas que indudablemente trae consigo este nuevo modelo de uso de Internet y las TIC en la Educación ( herramientas innovadoras de apoyo y soporte para una mejor práctica docente, mayor participación y motivación para los alumnos, mejora en el seguimiento curricular, etc. ) Se presentan inconvenientes muy parecidos a los clásicos de la informática educativa: Heterogeneidad de ordenadores, sistemas operativos, herramientas, plataformas… Mayores costes para el desarrollo de cursos y para integración de sistemas Poca posibilidad de reutilización/adaptación de contenidos o aplicaciones cuando cambia algún factor, como, por ejemplo, la plataforma o el contexto educativo o curricular. Hasta ahora, ha sido habitual que contenidos educativos excelentes desarrollados con enorme coste para una tecnología concreta se han perdido cuando se ha cambiado de plataforma o se ha producido un cambio tecnológico (por ejemplo, la evolución desde el vídeo disco interactivo al CD-ROM y, posteriormente, a Internet). Para paliar estos problemas, surge la Estandarización como solución necesaria : se trata de sistematizar la creación de materiales educativos de calidad que puedan ser actualizados, reutilizados y mantenidos a lo largo del tiempo. La estandarización se apoya en 2 iniciativas : Modelo de Objetos de Aprendizaje (OA). Los OA constan de unidades didácticas empaquetadas, con sus instrucciones de navegación y metadatos con la información sobre su contenido y uso educativo al que va destinado. ¿para qué?. Para que la comunidad docente pueda “encontrarlos” con herramientas de búsqueda que reconocen estos estándares, y así poder utilizarlos para mejorar su práctica docente. Movimiento Open Source . Disminución de costes y disponibilidad de herramientas y reutilización de código. Tendencia generalizable al desarrollo de plataformas abiertas en cualquier sector industrial.
El reto actual que plantea el nuevo escenario descrito de uso de Internet y las TIC en la Educación es converger en las iniciativas y el uso de estándares en los distintos niveles o capas de un modelo arquitectónico coherente , desde el ámbito de las TICs al ámbito de la Educación: La capa más baja hace referencia a aspectos puramente tecnológicos para las que ya existen estándares aceptados. TCP/IP y HTTP. La segunda capa trata de los formatos en los que se crean los contenidos educativos. Existe una gran variedad, aceptándose en general cualquier formato de contenido web que sea capaz de visualizar un navegador (incluso si para ello necesita algún complemento o plug-in). La realidad es que no existe aún un consenso claro sobre qué lenguaje o formato utilizar. XML y HTML son los principales candidatos actuales pero hay muchos sistemas que utilizan contenidos PDF por su portabilidad y calidad de impresión, o Macromedia Flash por su capacidad de animación o interacción. La tercera capa selecciona los mecanismos que se utilizarán para representar los metadatos asocidos con los contenidos educativos. Los metadatos son la información complementaria que se añade sobre los objetos educativos y que describen distintos aspectos sobre su contenido, sus objetivos didácticos, y facilitan los procesos de búsqueda, selección y recuperación. XML es la tecnología más frecuente para crear los metadatos, siendo considerada ya un estándar de facto para esta capa. Entre las características que han convertido a XML en la tecnología más utilizada, vale la pena destacar: la validación automática de documentos, la separación entre contenido y procesamiento, y la independencia de herramientas o plataformas concretas. No obstante, con el desarrollo de la web semántica, hay iniciativas para hacer dicha descripción utilizando RDF, ya que estas nuevas tecnologías facilitan el desarrollo de aplicaciones informáticas que traten e interpreten de manera automática dicha metainformación. Por otra parte, con los esquemas de metadatos , se determina qué información es relevante para los objetivos del modelo, se agrupa de acuerdo a una serie de categorías, que por lo general tienen carácter jerárquico, y por último, se adjunta al objeto como metadatos (implementados habitualmente con XML). El principal estándar ya aprobado de IEEE es el esquema de metadatos LOM ( Learning Object Metadata ) que se ocupa de estos aspectos. Las capas cuarta y quinta hacen referencia a la necesidad de estructurar los objetos en unidades superiores de contenido (los cursos) y asegurar su portabilidad a través de la red en forma de fichero, aportando toda la información para que sea posible su reconstrucción exacta en el sistema destinatario. La sexta capa busca la homogeneidad en la estructuración de los perfiles de aquellos implicados en el proceso de enseñanza y en la forma de utilizar didácticamente los recursos educativos. Por último, la capa de nivel superior aborda los aspectos de adecuación lingüística, cultural y social a distintos contextos. Esta última capa tiene un gran nivel de dificultad, y todavía no hay trabajos significativos al respecto. El uso de estándares en la creación de OA en la comunidad educativa proporciona una serie de ventajas : Interoperabilidad . Que se pueda intercambiar y mezclar contenido de múltiples fuentes y se pueda usar directamente en distintos sistemas. Que sistemas diferentes puedan comunicarse, intercambiar información e interactuar de forma transparente. Reusabilidad . Que el contenido pueda ser agrupado, desagrupado y reutilizado de forma rápida y sencilla. Que los objetos de contenido puedan ensamblarse y utilizarse en un contexto distinto a aquél para el que fueron inicialmente diseñados. Gestionabilidad . Que el sistema pueda obtener y trazar la información adecuada sobre el usuario y el contenido. Accesibilidad . Que un usuario pueda acceder el contenido apropiado en el momento justo y en el dispositivo correcto. Durabilidad . No quedar atrapados en una tecnología propietaria. Que no haya que hacer una inversión significativa para lograr la reutilización o la interoperabilidad. Escalabilidad . Que las tecnologías puedan configurarse para aumentar la funcionalidad de modo que se pueda dar servicio a más usuarios respondiendo a las necesidades de la institución, y que esto no exija un esfuerzo económico desproporcionado.
Con el uso de estándares todo son ventajas para el mayor aprovechamiento de las TICs en la práctica docente : Se obtienen mejoras importantes en el proceso general de producción de contenidos digitales educativos , al permitir: Buscar contenidos existentes para poder reutilizarlos en la elaboración de nuevos contenidos (flash, html, pdf,…). Empaquetar los contenidos creando Objetos de Aprendizaje de calidad, que, con su publicación controlada , puedan ser compartidos por todas las Comunidades Educativas, en formatos estándares (SCORM, LOM). Será la palanca para que los sistemas de gestión del aprendizaje (plataformas, LMS,…) puedan integrar distintas soluciones o programas (por ejemplo herramientas de la comunidad open-source) . Esto favorecerá la evolución y actualización controlada de las plataformas eLearning, con menores riesgos y costes ante, por ejemplo, decisiones de cambio de las mismas. Asimismo, es previsible que los sistemas eLearning se integren en un futuro muy cercano con implementaciones acordes a nuevos paradigmas tecnológicos (Web 2.0, redes sociales, etc.) –con la disponibilidad de foros, chats para alumnos, compartición de contenidos, etc.- que permitan prácticas de enseñanza en el terreno de lo que se ha venido a llamar “ aprendizaje colectivo ”.
Las estrategias y prioridades que a nuestro criterio han de fijarse son las siguientes: Implantación de Infraestructuras , con tendencia al uso de redes inalámbricas WI-FI, WiMax, que faciliten la implantación de: Sistemas de apoyo a la docencia (plataformas e-learning) Sistemas de gestión administrativa y económica de los centros educativos: necesidad de implementar y/o mejorar funcionalidades –pre-inscripciones, admisiones, vacantes,…- Sistemas de socialización y aplicaciones de movilidad (uso de móviles, PDAs,… por parte de alumnos para realizar gestiones con los centros –bibliotecas, horarios, …- y 3. (van unidas de la mano y son el objeto principal de esta presentación) Implantación de sistemas y plataformas de apoyo a la práctica docente Creación de contenidos ricos y de calidad que cubra todo el abanico de materias curriculares Los proyectos de Formación a los docentes y personal de los centros educativos resulta un factor clave de éxito, para una adecuada gestión del cambio cultural, y un adecuado y eficiente uso de las TICs en la Educación Desarrollar estrategias innovadoras en Web 2.0 , redes sociales (chats, foros, etc.) que permitan ampliar la colaboración alumnos-familia-docentes fuera del aula y que favorezcan la práctica del aprendizaje colectivo, donde el docente es más un guía que un instructor , tal como hoy se entiende . Ejemplo.- La evolución de un curso puede ser monitorizado por los padres o tutores, y cualquier tema de discusión entre familia y personal docente se puede canalizar con herramientas como Chat, blogs, correos, foros, etc. Sabemos que en España, las CCAA han avanzado en estas líneas, pero aún queda mucho por hacer : Madrid : plataforma EducaMadrid , Cataluña : portal Edu3.cat (apoyo a la docencia), proyectos SAGA (gestión de centros) y HEURA (banda ancha a las aulas) Andalucía : plataforma HELVIA , base de recursos BARTIC y portal AVERROES. Herramienta SENECA (gestión de centros) Valencia : plan MAS-TIC (infraestructuras TIC), plan INTEGRA-TIC , con el programa PASE de acogida a los centros. Castilla-La Mancha : proyectos PAPÁS (plataforma educativa), Delphos (gestión académica y administrativa) y Hermes (proyecto de conectividad) Castilla y León : proyecto estratégico AMERA , portal de educación, enciclopedia virtual, y bibliotecas digitales. Canarias : plataforma educativa Tagoror, y proyecto Medusa (gestión académica, administrativa y económica de centros) En paralelo, el CNICE (MEC) y Red.es llevan a cabo (conjuntamente con todas las CCAA de España) la iniciativa AGREGA (proximas diapositivas) para la puesta en marcha de una plataforma multi-nodos y la creación y adaptación de contenidos a los estándares de educación definidos por AENOR.
El proyecto AGREGA tiene por objetivo el desarrollo e implantación de una plataforma educativa, en modalidad de federación de repositorios de Objetos de Aprendizaje . Serán 18 nodos en total (uno para cada CCAA y otro para el CNICE (MEC), interconectados de acuerdo a uso de estandares, con el proposito de poder CREAR, ALMACENAR, BUSCAR y en definitiva, COMPARTIR contenidos educativos para mejorar la práctica docente. El proyecto AGREGA está siendo ejecutado por la UTE Indra y Santillana, para RED.ES y el CNICE y las CCAA, en el seno del Comité de Aplicaciones. Agrega se encuentra en una fase avanzada de ejecución. Actualmente está instalado en 18 nodos de pre-producción en su version Beta 2 (de 4), y para Junio 2008 comenzará su instalación final en cada uno de los entornos de producción de las CCAA . El objetivo más importante es poder compartir los contenidos mediante estándares . Agrega no busca en ningún caso sustituir a los sistemas LMS existentes en las CCAA ( las que ahora disponen de ellas, como EducaMadrid de la CAM , o Educarex de la Junta Extremadura , etc.), sino que pretende sumar funcionalidad. Agrega es una plataforma adicional que se integrará a las plataformas actuales que se dispongan, o también podrá ser utilizada como LMS para las que no dispongan de LMS.
El factor clave de Agrega es el uso de estándares de la industria TIC educativa, de acuerdo a normas homologadas en España por AENOR: SCORM para los repositorios de secuencias didácticas LOM.es para la información de catalogación SQI para las búsquedas federadas IMS-DRI para la interfaz de interoperabilidad Esto permitirá a la Comunidad Agrega interoperar con nodos europeos y transnacionales que cumplan estándares, facilitando y ampliando el acceso a contenidos educativos. En cuanto a la tecnología utilizada en Agrega, destacar: Desarrollado en SOA , con componentes web services interoperables Open-source Contenidos licenciados creative commons
Las Tendencias de la industria de las TIC en la Educación nos llevarán desde : Una situación actual donde conviven: Iniciativas privadas (diccionarios, enciclopedias, etc.) Iniciativas públicas como el proyecto AGREGA Y otras iniciativas públicas (gestión de bibliotecas, como ABIES) A una necesidad de ampliar el alcance actual , así como la conveniencia de innovar e invertir en áreas de I+D+i que ya están siendo punteras en la materia: Seguir produciendo contenidos , cada vez más ricos, incluso con técnicas de simulación de entornos reales, imágenes 3D, etc. Uso de realidad aumentada para explicar conceptos con itnerfaces naturales que favorezcan la enseñanza y comprensión de contenidos por parte de estudiantes, especialmente en áreas de Formación Profesional, Laboratorios, etc. Uso de pizarras electrónicos , y porqué no, pupitres electrónicos . Incorporar la tecnología de movilidad , para hacer aplicaciones que favorezcan la integración y socialización de alumnos y mejoren su relación con los centros educativos.
Las tecnologías Web 2.0 son muy atractivas y proporcionan al estudiante independencia y autonomía, mayor colaboración y mayor eficiencia pedagógica . La aplicación en la Educación de las herramientas Web 2.0: Blog: Los docentes pueden utilizarlo para orientar temas, poner noticias, contestar a preguntas de los alumnos o para generar conocimiento interrelacionado, y comentarios. Wiki: Permite a los alumnos hacer los trabajos de clase, generando el conocimiento en grupo, produciendo material de forma colaborativa. Por su parte, el profesor puede proveer estructura, pistas y proporcionar el feedback sobre los trabajos escritos. Servicios para compartir multimedia: Por ejemplo, Youtube (vídeos), Podcasting (podcasts y videocasts), Fliker (fotografias), Slidershare (presentaciones), DeviantArt (trabajo artístico), Scribd (documentos) Permiten compartir conocimiento en grupo. Con los Podcasts, el docente puede crear material introductorio antes de las clases. También permite grabar las clases y que los alumnos puedan oirlas tantas veces como necesiten. Para el aprendizaje de idiomas las grabaciones pueden ser realizadas por profesores nativos. Los videocast permiten a los docentes crear videos de clases experimentales Redes sociales: Los alumnos pueden contactar con personas para resolver dudas o ayudarles a encontrar información. Herramientas de edición colectiva: Permiten compartir trabajo, pudiendo ser editado por distintas personas, simultáneamente o en distintos momentos. Sindicación y notificación de contenidos: Todos los colaboradores de un trabajo en equipo pueden ser notificados acerca de nuevo contenido.
Como Conclusiones podemos decir que: El modelo clásico de aprendizaje ha dado ya paso a un nuevo modelo, donde las TIC tienen un papel destacado , por no decir necesario. El nuevo modelo impone, como mínimo, disponer de una plataforma educativa , un LMS, y un LCMS para explotar convenientemente los objetos de aprendizaje. Las CCAA dispondrán de Agrega para integrarse La educación privada deberá adaptarse a los estándares definidos para buscar la interoperabilidad. Los estándares permitirán comunicarse y compartir contenidos de una forma más coherente. La Formación de los docentes en el uso de las TIC, en general, así como formación en el uso las plataformas educativas que disponen, resultará necesario. La Gestión del Cambio que facilite romper tabús y mejorar la actitud de los docentes ante el buen uso de las TIC, las ventajas y facilidades que las TICs aportan a la labor docente, como herramientas facilitadoras de su labor docente, resultará decisivo.
