• Japan is East of Asia and neighbors South
Korea
• Its physical environment varies across the
country from extremely rural with rich
farmland and minimal infrastructure, to one
of the most densely populated cities in the
world - Tokyo!
• Other characteristics of importance are that
Japan is on a convergent plate boundary,
causing many earthquakes throughout the
country frequently
4. Population and People
• Japan has a population of over 127 million as
of 2014
• Has been on a population decline since 2010
• 98.5% of people are Japanese with the next
two biggest populations being Korean and
Chinese
• Government is a parliamentary system in which
members elect a prime minister from among
themselves where the prime minister forms and
leads the cabinet of ministers of state
• The two major religions across Japan are
Shinto and Buddhism with Shinto being as sold
as Japanese culture itself while Buddhism was
imported from the mainland in the 6th century
5. Brief History
• During the 19th century, Japan started to
become a regional power as it started to
develop more than most other countries
surrounding it. The most notable recent
event in Japan’s history was its attack
against the US in 1941 - Pearl Harbor
• This triggered America’s involvement in
WWII which led to Japan’s defeat, but still
recovered as an economic superpower- and
an ally of the United States
• Ever since then, Japan has only grown as a
country in power and development
6. Brief History
• In 2011, Japan’s most fierce earthquake in
history (9.0 magnitude) had devastated the
northeastern part of the country which had
killed thousands and affected several
nuclear power plants which caused
massive panic
• The earthquake was so massive that it had
immediately caused a tsunami short after,
only producing more damage to the
already ongoing aftershocks throughout
the country

Regardless of the
setbacks that Japan has
been through, the
country still grows in
economic development
and has only tested its
abilities to deal with
disasters, no matter how
massive
8. Place Like No Other
• Japan is an island nation that is roughly the size of California but it’s an economic superpower
despite having many setbacks such as WWII and constant natural disasters
• Will only continue to develop among the best in both economics and technology
9. Personal Interests
• Japan has some of the most advanced and influential footprints in technology in the world
• Its culture has influenced other countries through its medium of entertainment such as film, fashion,
video games, animation, and innovation
