This presentation is about Orcas also
known as Killer Whales. Scientists believe
that whale ancestors looked a lot more like
cows and dogs than fish. This marine
mammal’s scientific name is Orcinus Orca.
You will learn about what they eat, their
habitat and range, look at a map of their
range. Also you will study about their family
life, life cycle, anatomy and some
interesting facts.
Orcas have a diverse menu. They will eat
seals, penguins, fish, tuna, rays, sharks,
threshers, smooth hammer heads, squids, sea
turtles, dolphins, salmon, porpoises, whales,
walrus, sea birds, otters, and krill wriggle.
 Killer Whales are found all over the world-
North America, Northern Norway, Japan,
and Iceland, as well as water near
Antarctica. Killer whales are found in
waters near the poles to regions near the
equator.
 They first start at cold places, waters near
the poles, then move on to the hot
places, regions near the equator.
 A family group is called a pod. Orcas stay in pods
to hunt, play, and explore together. The pod forms
and reforms throughout orcas lives. Each pod has
its own family traditions. Day-to-day killer whale
behaviors generally consist of foraging, traveling,
resting, and socializing. Sometimes a pod is a group
of males that hunt together. Sometimes it’s a family
of hunters made up of a lead female, her children,
and her grand children.
 Calves develope inside their mother’s body for almost 16 months.
When a killer whale gives birth to her single calf underwater the calf
may emerge either head first or tail first. As soon as it is born the
mother whale pushes it gently toward the surface of the water so it
can take its first breath. Female killer whales are mature between
age of 10 to15. Calves are born any time of the year.

 Baby 8 feet (2 meters) 400 pounds (180
kilograms) Adults 19-27 feet (6-8 meters)
long and weigh 4 to 10 tons.
 They spend more than 1 hour underwater. Females will hunt
without male orcas. Killer Whales need naps. They sleep by
turning half of their brain off while the other half is awake.
When hunting it doesn’t take long for the pod to find another
seal because when they find one seal they quickly find
another seal. The orca has a powerful agile body that helps
makes it one of the most effective of all predators. The first
food for the killer whale calf is milk, just as it is for the other
mammals. Killer whales can mate any time of the year.
