M ore and more companies state difficulties to find “work ready” candidates from high calibre graduate engineers through to apprentices with the right attitude and an appropriate level of maths to meet current business needs. This coupled with an aging profile of existing engineering staff and the danger of insufficient succession planning and knowledge loss when retirement occurs, means that a long-term strategic solution needs to be found. Creating a pipeline for potential recruits as well as meeting immediate graduate recruitment requirements. This is a real national problem – young people and their lack of interest in science has been often in the headlines. The government policy of encouraging 50% of young people to attend university has had and will continue to have implications for companies. The number studying engineering has remained pretty static at 14,500 over the last 10 years whilst 43% of schools leavers are going to university. This is against a backdrop of hundreds of thousands of graduates . We have the STEM programme report stating that it is vital to our economy and the country’s prosperity that we maintain and develop our science base… we are determined to ensure a good supply of scientists, engineers, technologists and mathematicians. The Leitch Report talks of 14 years of unbroken growth and “UK skills remain fundamentally weks by international standards. They are holding back productivity growth.. (China & India 4 m graduates) Employers are being encouraged to “get involved”. EEF 2006 reports – So what can be done to attract young people and how is it possible to fill the skills gap. It will require some effort but in the course of my day job, I often meet people who tell me that they are trying to link up with their local schools to develop relationships. A considerable amount of time and effort is being put in, but on a piecemeal basis. This is where the EDT (Engineering Devlopment Trust) can assist within a structured, minimal input, low risk, high impact way.
