- The areas highlighted are the areas that SRM plans to focus on. These three boxes (Systems Management, Storage Management, Security management) represent three pillars that Tivoli offers solutions in. We intend to integrate with these disciplines to provide the most comprehensive systems management solution in the industry. (It is important to note that SRM will work with NAS, SAN and DAS. Those IT shops which have all three storage technologies deployed, will benefit the most from SRM).
- (http://www.ibm.com/software/tivoli/features/oct2003/guidelines.html) The Automation Blueprint is a way to think about the specific capabilities that need to be added to an existing hardware infrastructure to move it from being just a bunch of unmanaged hardware (that is growing in cost) to an On Demand environment. Starting with the infrastructure (orange block), one capability that can be added is virtualization of the infrastructure resource. On top of that virtualized resource is a layer of management software that exhibits characteristics in the areas of automating Availability management, automating Security management, automating the Optimization of existing resources and Provisioning of new resources. These characteristics can also be tied together into an orchestrated workflow. (click) Using the blueprint as a guide, IBM storage software is delivering on 6 areas of value. We find that many IT managers will choose one of these six areas as their “next step” toward evolving to an On Demand storage environment. Moving from the bottom up, the first area of focus is on improving flexibility in the storage infrastructure through virtualization. The next area of focus is on empowering administrators with a comprehensive set of Enterprise Storage Resource Management tools for managing heterogeneous storage infrastructures. Another step that can be taken to evolve to an On Demand storage environment is controlling storage growth with Hierarchical Storage Management to move low-activity or inactive data to a hierarchy of lower-cost storage. Next is to m anage cost associated with retaining (archiving) important information for long periods of time. Also, ensuring recoverability of business information is another step that can be taken. Finally, after taking one or more of these steps toward evolving to an On Demand storage environment, IT managers will also look at orchestrating workflows – eliminating most human errors and creating repeatable, auditable storage processes.
