As Western Australians representing the Muslim communities of Western Australia
we condemn the production and release of the offensive film Innocence of
Muslims. The producer of the film, which is full of lies and hatred, took advantage of
the right of freedom of speech / opinion to distort the image of our Prophet. We
strongly believe that he abused this right and; therefore, we condemn him and
everyone associated with him in this matter. We also condemn the loss of life and the
acts of violence that have occurred since the release of this trailer.
These acts of violence strongly contradict the teachings of Islam and the peaceful
example of our Prophet. We also all agree that what happened in Sydney does not
represent the values and beliefs of the vast majority of Australian Muslims.
While freedom of expression and freedom of assembly are rights that all Australians
are entitled to, there are also responsibilities to exercise this right peacefully and
respect the rule of law.
The actions of a few should not be considered to represent the majority of peaceful,
law abiding members of the Australian Muslim community.
We send our condolences to the families of those who have lost their lives as a result
of the recent acts of violence and to communities here in Australia and overseas who
have been affected by the recent acts of community disharmony and violence.
The Muslim community has had a long history of settlement and contribution to the
economic, social and cultural life of our State dating back to the 1880s. We have been
living peacefully as good citizens, and enjoying good neighbourhood relationships and
friendships as taught by our faith. We all have a desire and commitment to ensure this
State continues to prosper and that our communities continue to contribute to its
future.
The Muslim communities of Western Australia are committed to living in harmony
with others and working alongside our fellow Western Australians in promoting
positive interaction, understanding and mutual respect between all members of the
society regardless of cultural, religious and ethnic backgrounds.
