3.  DBCC adapted a program from the University
of Michigan Cancer Center to formalize the
mentoring process
◦ The program booklet was customized and
converted to a slide presentation
 First Peer Mentor training –December 1, 2005
◦ Facilitators included Vicky Cooke, Deloris Donnelly,
Cathy Holloway, Rena Howard, Nanci Mayer-
Mihalski, Lois Wilkinson, Wilma Yu

4.  Mentor Training – part 2
◦ December 2006: Vicky Tosh-Morelli presented the
first workshop on clinical trials to mentors
◦ Summer 2007: A formal program was developed
and offered to all peer mentors –3 participated
◦ Decided to incorporate basic clinical trial
information into the Peer Mentor Training Program
to expose all mentors to clinical trials
 Peer Mentors trained by Program Managers in
all 3 counties

5.  Beginning Your Breast Cancer Journey
◦ Offered in partnership with Helen Graham Center
and an expansion of the mentoring program
◦ Offers basic info to patients
 In 2009 - Beginning Your Pink Ribbon

importance of research in the Tx of breast
cancer
 Kandie Dempsey provided overview of clinical
trials at the Helen Graham Cancer Center
(HFGCC)

12.  DBCC participated in a prevention trial pilot at
HFGCC
◦ Recruited survivors for a educational DVD to raise
awareness
 Research Committee met with Drs. Petrelli
and Bowman to discuss DBCC involvement in

◦ Cathy Holloway attends CCOP meetings and is a
member of the IRB at Christiana Care

13.  Lois Wilkinson invited to attend Tumor Board
meetings at Bayhealth
 Cheryl Doucette selected to serve on NBCC
