ABSTRACT
Abstract:
CFIA has now become the place to be and go for professionals of the food business. Indeed, this is the
only exhibition in France gathering under one roof the whole of the food industry suppliers providing
Ingredients & Additives, Equipments & Food processing and Packaging. Some of the packaging
solutions shown, like wooden or paper baking molds, are definitely only aimed at the food industry.
Other packages on display however could very well be used in many other industrial sectors with or
without any adjustments as the trend for lighter, more efficient and eco-designed packages is seen
across all sectors. Backed by growing customer demand for more environmentally friendly products,
sustainable packaging is now sought by many companies that see in them a way of possible cost saving
and definite sales increase.

argument marketing fort.

ATTRACTIVE & CONVENIENT SOLUTIONS
The primary role of packaging is protection. However, in western countries this function is very much
taken for granted and packages are used for marketing purposes and sales development. Indeed,
looking at shelves in supermarkets, we see that brands very much compete on packaging and label
grounds.
Customers are looking for convenient good-looking products. Plastic boxes are becoming more stylish
with glassware looks, dark shades for a luxury feel. Also seeing what is inside the box is reassuring and
we see more and more ready-to-eat food in see-through boxes.

Largely, packages rely on vision to attract our attention, but other senses like smell may also be used
to drive customers’ choice on the supermarket shelf
Aromepack is an aromatic package developed by Spanish company Enplater going beyond common
packaging perception. Aromepack is available with a range of aromas like cinnamon, bread, chocolate,
coffee…

1.1 NATURAL AND TRADITIONAL LOOKING PACKAGING SOLUTIONS
Today when purchasing a product, customers need to be reassured about quality and safety. They also
want healthy products made with “natural” ingredients they trust. The packaging used may help
convey certain values. Indeed, paper and natural fiber looking trays give food products a more
traditional feel than aluminum trays for instance.
Some companies specialize in this type of paper trays for the baking industry where the home-made
looking of products is particularly appreciated. Italian company Novacart is one of them.
Novacart’s Ecos Paper Baking Mould is an ecological and innovative solution living a traditional image
to sweet and savory products. It has been designed to carry out the double function as a baking mould
as well as tray for its final presentation on the dining-table. It can stand baking in conventional and
microwave oven up to the temperature of + 200°C. Also, the mold does not require greasing or other
treatments for easy release from the customer

The Emin Leydier group is a family run-business that produces paper and packaging products. Emin
Leydier paper mills produce 750,000 tons of corrugating paper annually at 2 production sites in France.
Elytra® produces corrugated packaging suitable for direct food contact in a state-of-the-art plant, built
in 2003 by the Emin Leydier Groupe. Unique in Europe, due to its high level of cleanliness, especially in
terms of hygiene, the elytra production process guarantees:
 Application of Good Manufacturing Practices as used in the pharmaceutical, cosmetics and
food sectors
 Reduction of the dust level in the packaging and dust contamination of the workplace
 Control of hygiene throughout
 Application of the inertia principle for material in direct contact with food
Elytra is certified ISO 9001, has obtained BRC (British Retail Consortium) and Institute of Packaging
accreditation as well as GMP (Good Manufacturing Practices) by Fefco-Esbo.
At CFIA 2012, Elodie Faudot told us that many customers are now asking for « simpler » cardboard
packaging as many companies want to convey a message in line with the respect of the environment.
Boxes developped for those customers are therefore plain with very simple decorations.
Another trend they see is mono-material packaging solutions. Plastic films
traditionnally used to maintain parts within the box are replaced by
cardboard parts and boxes that can be seals without tape are developped .
These all-cardboard packaging solutions are easier to recycle and appeal to
customers caring for the environment.

1.2 CONVENIENT PACKAGING SOLUTIONS

Simplissime is an Open & Close system designed and conceived for airtight bags that can thereby easily
be opened to eat and reclosed to preserve.
A one-use label showing that the bag has never been opened is unstuck from the packaging in order to
make a window appear. This open area can be nearly as wide as the bag and also helps the consumer
take or pour the product easily. The repositionable adhesive disclosed while first opening allow to
reclose the the bag over and over while reducing the volume of the package as the product goes along.
As the bags’ Open & Close system is airtight and resists to steam, it could either be used on grocery or
fresh products’ industry. The repositionable window label can be applied automatically and the film
can be cut off by packing machines, by film printers or even by Etik Ouest.

Torus Pak is a packaging solution for the food industry developed by Swedish company Innovative
Design of Scandinavia AB. Torus Pak Europe N.V. sells and markets the patented Torus Pak® packaging
system to the European market under license.
Torus Pak Europe presented for the first time in France their innovative tray at CFIA Rennes 2012. The
pack is already established in countries like the Nederland, the UK and Germany, but not really known
in France.
This is a “Straight-to-Plate” packaging solution for single portion meals that features a removable
bottom which offers the unique possibility to easily serve the packaged meal on a plate, and still have
the food presented as it was in the package. Indeed, unlike existing trays, Torus-Pak opens from the
bottom, giving customers a restaurant quality meal, in their own home!

Torus Pak’s ingenious system is easy to use and allows stunning food presentation
(Source: Torus Pak)

This feature opens up completely new possibilities for the whole food industry, from restaurants and
caterers to the largest ready meal manufacturers, where current package solutions force the end users
to eat out of the tray or shovel the contents onto their plates.

P a g e | 12
As these solutions can’t offer an attractive presentation, the consumer acceptance of ready meals is
affected in a negative way. By offering meals that are ready to be served on plates, hotels, caterers
and ready meal producers can reach new markets and customers.
“Using the Torus Pak trays for our meals can help us saving both time and money as we’ll be able to
serve our clients perfectly presented meals for a minimal effort”, said Martin and Victoria at First
Choice Catering in Hertfordshire, who started using Torus Pak in February.
Torus Pak’s unique solution has been named winner of two prestigious innovation awards the last two
years: Food Hospitality Innovativeprijs in the Netherlands 2010, and the Packaging Innovation Award in
Sweden 2011.

Benefits and features:
• A unique solution for all types of prepared food. The system combines Torus Pak
trays, top film and a Torus Pak sealing machine.
• All Torus Pak trays are easy and simple to use, and have been tested on consumers of
all ages and abilities.
• The Torus Pak tray has all the same features as a traditional tray in strength and
appearance but includes the additional feature of a pull tab that opens the package
from the bottom. To use the tray simply pull the tab to open the bottom and the
freshly cooked meal is perfectly presented on the plate.
• MAP packaged meals can be accommodated.
• The tray and film are polypropylene – can be frozen and reheated in the microwave
To view the striking result Torus Pak allows you to get on: www.youtube.com/watch?v=R7BfN5nwrAQ
Torus Pak is filled and sealed as usual and tolerates pasteurizing, MAP (modified atmosphere), and
tough handling. Torus Pak is made of PP and can be heated in the microwave. The important
difference is that it opens from the bottom by pulling the bottom off.
Torus Pak offers a packaging solution that is both innovative and environmentally friendly. The thin
bottom on the Torus Pak reduces the amount of material that is used, which in turn reduces the
impact on the environment – both in production and recycling.
Effective logistics solution
Torus Pak trays are specially designed for transport on European pallets that hold 15 boxes
with 720 Torus Pak trays each. Torus Pak therefore can deliver 10 800 trays per pallet, which is
not only the market’s most effective logistics solution, but also reduces emissions due to the
decrease in transportation.
Less material consumption
Torus Pak is designed to complement a standard European plate (210 mm in diameter),
thereupon the tray has no unnecessary surfaces. The thin bottom on the Torus Pak tray also
means that it has been possible to reduce the weight by up to 30% compared to similar tray
solutions. This reduced material consumption leads in its turn to reduced impact on the
environment by production, transportation, and waste management.

Plus Pack is an innovative international company that manufactures aluminum and thermo-formed
plastic packaging for food products. Founded in 1963, Plus Pack has operations in seven countries
across Europe, with production and warehousing facilities are located in Denmark and Belgium.
At CFIA Rennes 2012, Plus Pack presented their Ready2Cook range developed a couple of years ago. In
France, ready to cook meals are not much sought after, but some countries in Europe see in these
products a real alternative to fast-food. Moreover, these convenient meals allow customers to have
well balanced and healthy meals.
Ready2Cook is therefore a packaging solution that allows companies to offer consumers the
opportunity to provide fresh, wholesome, ready-made meals that consumers can put directly in the
oven at home.
Ready2Cook trays can be packed in a modified atmosphere and hermetically sealed to preserve
freshness. A clear anti-fog treated OPS click-on dome lid is also available. After usage the alufoil
containers are easily recyclable.

With more than 30 standard smoothwall aluminum container styles, the Ready2Cook® range provides
a solution for every demand. All containers are made of quality aluminum, which offers optimal barrier
properties, good thermal conductivity, cold and heat resistance and decorative properties. New sizes
and shapes are continuously added to the range.

PACKAGES WITH LOWER ENVIRONMENTAL FOOTPRINT
Sustainability is a mega-trend amongst all industrial sectors and packaging solutions having a lower
impact on the environment are sought in order make more efficient use of natural resources and
energy.
Indeed, the 3R principle for better packages state that reusing, recycling and reducing may help deal
with increasing amount of packaging waste treatment, gas emissions, and scarcity of fossil resources…
Life Cycle Assessments (LCA) is a measurement tool that allows to compare the burden on the
environment of different package solutions and to choose the best possible packaging for a given
product and use.

Also, LCA, when part of an eco-design strategy, makes it possible to take into consideration the whole
life of the packaging solution, from the raw material used to the packaging end of life with disposal.
The basic idea of eco-designing is to minimize the packaging environmental footprint.
The main ideas we see companies developing today to minimize the carbon footprint of their packages
are basically:
- Making lighter packages with expended PET and PS (Clocker pentacles) and glass replacement
for instance.
- Using less material with thinner films and walls…
- Making recycling easier with mono material, easy to separate composite packages…
- Facilitating packaging end of life treatment with biodegradable materials.
Optimized packages can feature two or more of these ideas. For instance, composite packages whose
plastic pot and cardboard parts are easily separated are optimized in terms of raw materials in order to
make the solution cost effective. Indeed, these pots wich are optimized in terms of raw material,
recycling and cost are a very good exemple of what can be done in package eco-design.

1.3 USING LESS MATERIAL AND MAKING PACKAGES LIGHTER
Many companies specialized in coextruded films have optimized their solutions in order to get
improved environemental footprint.
This is the case for instance of Spanich based company Plastienvase
which now offers films that are thinner and that therefore have a
lower impact on the environment.
Companies that choose their new SOL film, which is thinner than
previous solutions, also benefits from reduced costs on storage,
transport and ecotax.
This film material can be transparent (SOL NATURAL) or opaque (SOL BLANCO) and consists of a
multilayer co-extrusion with EVOH barrier. It is available from 25 microns on and can be laminated
with PET, OPA, or PP films.
Another company, Vezelpas from Portugal also presented films with reduced thickness at CFIA 2012.
Their latest 7 layer coextruded films are said to have the same thickness as the 5 layer ones with added
properties and increased performances.
Films are very much used in packaging, be it in primary packages as above or as secondary or tertiary
packaging like in the case of gathering plastic bottle or securing packs on pallets.

Duo Plast is a German manufacturer of stretch films used in the industrial and agricultural sector and
for the packaging of food. At CFIA 2012, Duo Plast presented Duo Food Contact and their patented
stretch film with double edges called DDK.
Duo Food Contact is highly stretchable so less material is need
Duo Food Contact film has been specifically developed for direct food
contact and is certified according to the latest EU Regulation 10/2011.
According to Duo Plast, this approval for direct food contact goes far
beyond the well-known food-safety legislation: Not only the separate
raw materials are assessed to be safe, but also the entire film fulfils
close migration limits.
Duo Plast produces the film under strictest hygiene rules within the
global standard BRC / IoP. In Europe the compliance with the new EU
regulation in connection with a production according to BRC / IoP for
stretch films is said to be unique so far.

P a g e | 17
The certified film offers entirely new possibilities for the food industry. Duo Food Contact is a blown
stretch film that has outstanding technical properties such as extreme elongation and tear strength.
Thanks to this, the film thickness can be reduced and significant material savings can be realized.
Excellent adhesion properties and restraining forces increase transport security considerably.
Benefits include:
 Environmentally friendly and easily recyclable because of 100% polyethylene – free of PIB
 Excellent transparency
 Extreme extensibility and low noise processing
 High puncture and tear resistance in longitudinal and transverse direction
 Excellent adhesion properties for best connected film layers
 Enormous restraining forces for high transport security
 Completely smooth outer side prevents sticking of pallets
Duo Food Contact is suitable as primary packaging for all kinds of food and for packaging raw materials
for food production. It is available in film thickness of 15 microns with inside or outside cling, and as
machine or hand rolls. It may also be equipped with or without double edge (DDK)
Stretch film with double edges for added strength and tear
resistance while reducing the amount of film used
The world wide patented stretch film DDK has already attracted a lot
of attention. The stretch film has won the "German Packaging Award'
and the 'PIF Gold Medal' and signals a new trend in the field of load
security.
The unique feature of this film is the double edge, which makes it
twice as strong and tear-resistant at the edges compared to
conventional films. In addition, it is one-side cling, one side smooth
and connects the packaged goods optimally with the pallet due to a
string generation at the bottom.
Another very important highlight is the unique net structure that is
generated through the wrapping process. The net structure increases
pallet stability significantly while enormous reductions of material
consumption can be realized.

P a g e | 18
Advantages over standard films:
 Higher tear resistance (static and dynamic)
 Maximum extension 10% higher (compared to DUO standard films)
 Smaller unwinding resistance over the whole roll
 Lower noise level at the unwinding process
 Safe handling on fully automatic machines

Established in Belgium and France, Plastic Force has been specializing for over 20 years in the design
and manufacture of thermoformed plastic packaging mainly PS, APET, PETG and PP.
At CFIA 2012, they told us about their mono-material tray development that comprises an APET tray
with an APET skin layer.

Also they have developped, an APET tray with 50% recycled content, especially designed to keep meat
and fish juices away. The tray that includes a build-in self absorbing feature is covered with a
microperforated APET film in order to prevent holes from getting clogged with flesh.
Furthermore unlike packaging solutions comprising absorbing blotters, this tray allows gas to go all
around the packaged product and therfore provides extended shelf life. This latest packaging solution
is not yet available as it is still being developped.

The Sirap Group has been working in the packaging sector for over 50 years and is one of the main
producers of single-use plastic packaging in Europe. Their range of products include foam and rigid
containers.
Their latest development is an all APET system consisting of a tray and a sealing top film made of the
same material for meat, poultry and fish packaging.

Advantages of the new system are:
 Longer shelf life: due to the performances of gas and liquid barrier, the APET System keeps the
food characteristics unaltered for more than 10 days, that is said to be much longer than with
PP packaging.
 Completely recyclable: the mono material APET system can be recycled in the standard PET
circuit (as for plastic bottles).
 Better transparency: the perfect clarity and gloss of the Freshplus-BT film, combined with the
antifog property garantee a superior presentation of the food in the pack.
 Perfect top sealing: the mechanical properties and the seal resistance ensure superior
protection and easy working conditions on the packaging lines.
 Excellent processability: the APET system offers good processability in terms of denesting and
handling of the trays on packaging lines, and in terms of unrolling and sealability of the top
film.
Standard trays are available in several sizes and in different colours (transparent, black, green,
translucent blue and translucent orange).

1.6 USING MATERIALS COMPRISING RECYCLED OR RENEWABLE RESSOURCES
Amongst companies displaying PET trays, many of them now offer trays made using recycled PET as
this plastic material is perhaps the one that has the best collection and recycling rate. This is due to the
fact that bottled drink consumption has shown a tremendous growth over the past 15 years, and that
most plastic bottle are now made of PET facilitating the development of post-consumer treatment of
empty bottles. Trays, pots and cups made of polypropylene and polyethylene also come in recyclecontaing format as these thermoplastic resins are easy to recycle and very much in used in the
packaging industry.
Besides using post-consumer material, replacing part of the plastic material used with mineral or
vegetal (waste) matter or using bio-based plastics may be some other ways of reducing the burden of
packaging on the environement.

For more than 40 years Klöckner Pentaplast has been producing rigid films for the food and
pharmaceutical packaging industries.
Kp offers a full range of rigid forming films for food called Pentafood® films that:
 Protect products, extend shelf lives, and ensure safety and hygiene.
 Are specially formulated with unique attributes, such as barrier protection and heat resistance.
 Are manufactured to look great and enhance shelf appeal.
 Perform beautifully on current packaging and converting machines.
SmartCycle® films contain recycled plastic beverage bottles
SmartCycle mono- and multi-layer films offer a range of products with various guaranteed levels (for
example 50 or 70%) of post-consumer recycled plastic bottle content. These films are certified to meet
packaging regulations and to comply with all FDA regulations for direct food contact as well as all
applicable EU regulations and directives for food contact. In addition, the films exceed U.S. California
and Oregon regulations for rigid plastic packaging containers.
These films are used for trays, clamshells, blisters, all-plastic boxes, and various other containers as
well as printed signage and stationery applications.
SmartCycle films provide a plastic packaging option to consumer product companies and retailers
while building long-term value by helping them move toward their sustainable packaging goals.
Because the SmartCycle logo may appear on the plastic containers using this film, consumers can make
educated choices on their purchases.

© VIEDOC - Pour tout renseignement : contact@veillesalon.com
P a g e | 27

The SmartCycle process of making film from recycled plastic bottles saves energy, natural resources,
and, ultimately, will help spur collection of bottles and potentially custom packaging.
This begins with marking all packages with the SmartCycle logo derived from the petaloid base found
on most PET bottles. A key goal of SmartCycle is to help people feel positive about and responsible for
their packaging choice by conveying the story of sustainable packaging to the entire packaging value
chain (Cycle)—consumers, retailers, OEMs, converters, and resource recovery plants.
Finally, at the end of the use cycle, the goal of the SmartCycle mark is to facilitate actual recycling—not
down cycling. Currently, most municipalities, retailers, and recycling companies collect only bottles
and do not recycle plastic clamshells due to concern for mixing polymer types. With a unique
identifying mark, SmartCycle packages could potentially allow these items to be reprocessed into new
containers along with bottles made from like plastics.
TerraPET™ films consist of up to 30% renewable resource content
Pentaclear®, Pentaform® and Pentafood® rigid TerraPET™ films provide the same brilliant cosmetic
clarity and performance properties as standard APET films and are made in part from sugar cane,
TerraPET films allow companies to replace fossil fuel based material with up to 30% plant based
material.
TerraPET films have the same performance properties as standard APET films so there is no need to
change tooling or package design. These films process on existing equipment in the same
thermoforming range and have the same cuttability as standard APET. With a heat-deflection
temperature of over 145°F, no special handling or logistics are necessary.
Furthermore, as with standard APET films, packages produced with these films can be marked with SPI
resin identification code 1 and waste from thermoforming operations is compatible with existing preconsumer recycling streams.

TerraPET was selected to make thermoformed
clear clamshells for the packaging of AT&T products.

P a g e | 28
TerraPET is a new product that was launched in 2011. It is already in production in the USA, and could
be supplied to any European company if interested.
However, it should be said that as long as bio-based plastics will be a lot more expensive than
conventional fossil-based polymers (twice as expensive in the case of TerraPET) companies will find it
hard to make the vegetal choice.

launched in 2011 initially for meat, fish and sausage tray packs.
According to Sharpak, c-LOW is produced using a blend of a
natural mineral, recyclate and virgin polypropylene providing a
significant carbon reduction over conventional polypropylene
punnets.

The firm has also developed the material for its mushroom
punnets :
• c-LOW mushroom packaging represents a 33%
reduction over conventional PP mushroom punnets
• c-LOW is said to be the lowest carbon footprint
punnet available
• c-LOW is blended from post consumer waste stream
and a natural mineral filler content
• c-LOW has the lowest virgin petrochemical content
• c-LOW has a natural non-plastic appearance and is
soft to the touch
• c-LOW is manufactured through the highly efficient
and waste-free Rotary Thermoforming process at
Sharpak Yate.
According to Sharpak, c-LOW trays retain the same mechanical properties as polypropylene trays, with
“excellent chill impact and top load properties and no increase in product weight”.

Spanish company San Cayetano has developed cellulose packaging solutions for the food and industrial
sectors in order to find a use for scraps from its cardboard boxes production. They provide cellulose
packaging solutions for several applications:
- Modified Atmosphere Packaging applications for fresh meats, fish and poultry with extended
shelf life.
- Dual Ovenable Trays for Ready Meals
- Fresh Fruit and Vegetable packaging solutions -100 % compostable and biodegradable
packaging solutions
The technology to produce trays from cellulose has improved a lot in the past years and Grupo San
Cayetano is now capable to produce the next generation of pulp trays that exhibit:
 Economic competitiveness compared to existing plastic trays as these cellulose solutions are
only 10% more expensive as PP trays
 Quality and performance in terms of:
◦ Heat treatment up to 140 °C
◦ Unequalled Cool - to - Touch
◦ Moisture and water resistant
◦ Oxygen barrier caracteristics for MAP applications
◦ Microwaveability
◦ Biodegradable and compostable
With an easy peeled liner for selective recycling
San Cayetano barrier cellulose trays destined for Modified Atmosphere Packaging applications can be
provided with a pull-tab for peeling off the inside liner after use by the final consumer.

Following the correct instructions indicated on the package, the consumer will open the packaging and
afterwards will peel off the inside liner obtaining the bare cellulose base and the separate plastic liner.
Differentiated waste disposal is possible of the plastic liner (2 to 4 grams) and the remaining 100 %
cellulose tray (20 to 40 grams).
Also available in all biodegradable version
The San Cayetano Fruittray, 100% virgin cellulose, biodegradable and compostable, allows for hermetic
sealing with NewFoodPackaging lidding materials composed of Cellulose or Polyolefin based materials,
all certified according to the European Standard of Industrial Biodegradability EN 13 432.

The result is a cellulose tray, allowing for natural respiration rates of the produce and fruit, with
excellent moisture vapor transmission rates, allowing for a natural habitat combined with transparent
biodegradable top sealing film, providing a total sustainable packaging solution. The package is also
available with bio compostable liner.

Also available in micro-waveable and ovenable versions
San Cayetano has developed an innovative packaging solution for Ready Meals based on
Microwaveable Cellulose Trays and Dual Ovenable Trays. This technology combines cellulose trays with
an inside polyolefin liner either suitable for Microwave or Tradional oven.

Consumer testing has confirmed that cellulose trays provide an immediate perception of sustainable
packaging and user-friendlyness. The cellulose structure gives this tray technology severalkey features:




Cool To Touch feature: No other existing tray can withstand the oven temperatures and
give such a convincing Cool To Touch as the cellulose trays. Tray temperatures remains
below 47 °C, comfortable touching temperatures with inside boiling water.
Tray Rigidity during heat treatments: Unlike CPET, the Cellulose trays keep their rigidity
during heat treatment. This is a great safety feature versus existing CPET trays (at 65 °C
CPET trays are soft and unsteady).
Disposal after Use: Consumers immediately perceive cellulose as sustainable packaging
material and value the disposal friendly feature of cellulose trays.

The company already presented the cellulose trays at last year’ CFIA, and Managing Director Mr.
Aberer, told us that first deliveries were made earlier this year.

highlighted stackable lightweight HDPE pallets. Besides being lightweight theses pallets allow to save

CONCLUSION
Although CFIA is not dedicated to packaging, this show nevertheless offers visitors many interesting
packaging solutions and equipments for the food industry.
Most companies exhibiting at this show are not focused on the food industry but provide solutions for
many different sectors. However, some companies are highly specialized and will not be seen in other
exhibitions.
Not surprinsingly, we saw at this year’s CFIA that exhibitors were much focused on offering more
efficient packages in terms both of weight or thickness and recycling. This has indeed been a major
trend for the past years.
Consumers are more and more aware about environmental issues. When buying a product they now
care not only about the content but also about the package. They are therefore looking for ecodesigned packages that show a concern for the environement and bio-based plastic, post-consumer
plastics, certified paper and biodegradable materials have become a must for some companies in
order to keep a competitive edge.
Beside this concern for our planet, food packaging is very much focused on convenience as people
spend less and less time cooking and buy more and more ready-made and on-the-go meals. Packages
have therefore had to evolve and containers, bags and pots have become a real marketing tool for
companies.
Many of the companies seen at CFIA 2012 told us that they will be at Emballage, Paris in November
with new products. So, we look forward to going to Embalage to discover their latest developments
together with those of many other companies that did not make it to Rennes.

  • 4. Page |4 ABSTRACT Abstract: CFIA has now become the place to be and go for professionals of the food business. Indeed, this is the only exhibition in France gathering under one roof the whole of the food industry suppliers providing Ingredients & Additives, Equipments & Food processing and Packaging. Some of the packaging solutions shown, like wooden or paper baking molds, are definitely only aimed at the food industry. Other packages on display however could very well be used in many other industrial sectors with or without any adjustments as the trend for lighter, more efficient and eco-designed packages is seen across all sectors. Backed by growing customer demand for more environmentally friendly products, sustainable packaging is now sought by many companies that see in them a way of possible cost saving and definite sales increase. Key words: Packaging, eco-designed, LCA, life cycle, convenient, bio-based, biodegradable, compostable, recyclable, film, tray, punnet, mold, paper, cardboard, pulp, glass, plastic, PET, PE, PP, fibre, fiber, cup, container, bag, label, slider, pallet, machine, equipment *** Résumé: Le CFIA est le salon de tous les professionnels de l’agroalimentaire.
  • 5. Page |5 INTRODUCTION CFIA is the only exhibition in France gathering the whole of the food industry suppliers under one roof. Year after year this exhibition is attracting more and more people and with 1300 exhibitors and nearly 15 000 visitors for this year’s edition, CFIA Rennes has become the place to be for professionals of the food business. On the 1300 companies exhibiting 430 were companies involved in packaging, offering either packaging solutions or packaging equipments. The other companies at CFIA were involved in Equipments & Food processing (750) and Ingredients (120). Some of the packaging solutions shown at the show are aimed at the food business only whereas others are packages can be used in many other industrial sectors with or without any adjustments. That why VeilleSalon included this exhibition in its 2013 offer whose aim is to provide you with a broad view of the latest trends and innovations of the packaging industry. As a reminder, the three other packaging exhibitions VeilleSalon went to or will go to this year are: PCD and Aerosol&Dispensing Forum (February), Pharmapack (February), and Emballage (November). For each one of the events, VeilleSalon will write up a comprehensive report with contact names and phone number, details of the products shown and available corresponding patents. Furthermore, and at the end of the year a summarized document will be issued and sent to our subscribers. For more information about this offer, please contact Bruno Galimand on +33 (0)1 43 45 27 or at bgalimand@viedoc.biz. © VIEDOC - Pour tout renseignement : contact@veillesalon.com
  • 6. Page |6 ATTRACTIVE & CONVENIENT SOLUTIONS The primary role of packaging is protection. However, in western countries this function is very much taken for granted and packages are used for marketing purposes and sales development. Indeed, looking at shelves in supermarkets, we see that brands very much compete on packaging and label grounds. Customers are looking for convenient good-looking products. Plastic boxes are becoming more stylish with glassware looks, dark shades for a luxury feel. Also seeing what is inside the box is reassuring and we see more and more ready-to-eat food in see-through boxes. Seraphine glassware launched in 2010(left) and the Box (right) that made 50% of the market in France in 2010 (Source: Europlastiques) Largely, packages rely on vision to attract our attention, but other senses like smell may also be used to drive customers’ choice on the supermarket shelf Aromepack is an aromatic package developed by Spanish company Enplater going beyond common packaging perception. Aromepack is available with a range of aromas like cinnamon, bread, chocolate, coffee… Odorant flexible package developed by Entplater called Aromepack (Source: Enplater) © VIEDOC - Pour tout renseignement : contact@veillesalon.com
  • 7. Page |7 1.1 NATURAL AND TRADITIONAL LOOKING PACKAGING SOLUTIONS Today when purchasing a product, customers need to be reassured about quality and safety. They also want healthy products made with “natural” ingredients they trust. The packaging used may help convey certain values. Indeed, paper and natural fiber looking trays give food products a more traditional feel than aluminum trays for instance. Some companies specialize in this type of paper trays for the baking industry where the home-made looking of products is particularly appreciated. Italian company Novacart is one of them. Novacart’s Ecos Paper Baking Mould is an ecological and innovative solution living a traditional image to sweet and savory products. It has been designed to carry out the double function as a baking mould as well as tray for its final presentation on the dining-table. It can stand baking in conventional and microwave oven up to the temperature of + 200°C. Also, the mold does not require greasing or other treatments for easy release from the customer 1.1.1 Gault&Fremont: Home-made looking baking molds Address Gault&Frémont 16, rue des Yvaudières 37700 Saint-Pierre des Corps France www.gaultetfremont.com www.bio-food-pack.com Contact Frédéric Leduc Sales & Marketing Director Phone: +33 (0)2 47 32 37 80 Mobile: +33 (0)6 42 57 58 44 fleduc@gaultetfremont.fr In 2010, Gault & Frémont, the French leader for specialty packaging in paper and cardboard, acquired BioFoodPack, the French manufacturing leader for food containers in parchment paper. • 9. Page |9 1.1.2 Emin Leydier: Back to basics for cardboard packaging solutions Address Groupe VELFOR Route du Velay 43500 St Pal En Chalencon France www.emin-leydier.fr Contact Elodie Faudot Marketing Manager Phone: +33 (0)4 74 73 19 08 Mobile: +33 (0)6 86 64 40 64 elodie.faudot@emin-leydier.com The Emin Leydier group is a family run-business that produces paper and packaging products. Emin Leydier paper mills produce 750,000 tons of corrugating paper annually at 2 production sites in France. Elytra® produces corrugated packaging suitable for direct food contact in a state-of-the-art plant, built in 2003 by the Emin Leydier Groupe. Unique in Europe, due to its high level of cleanliness, especially in terms of hygiene, the elytra production process guarantees:  Application of Good Manufacturing Practices as used in the pharmaceutical, cosmetics and food sectors  Reduction of the dust level in the packaging and dust contamination of the workplace  Control of hygiene throughout  Application of the inertia principle for material in direct contact with food Elytra is certified ISO 9001, has obtained BRC (British Retail Consortium) and Institute of Packaging accreditation as well as GMP (Good Manufacturing Practices) by Fefco-Esbo. At CFIA 2012, Elodie Faudot told us that many customers are now asking for « simpler » cardboard packaging as many companies want to convey a message in line with the respect of the environment. Boxes developped for those customers are therefore plain with very simple decorations. Another trend they see is mono-material packaging solutions. Plastic films traditionnally used to maintain parts within the box are replaced by cardboard parts and boxes that can be seals without tape are developped . These all-cardboard packaging solutions are easier to recycle and appeal to customers caring for the environment. 1.2 CONVENIENT PACKAGING SOLUTIONS In addition to being reassuring and attractive, packaging solutions must be convenient as customers are more and more looking for product that allow them to save time and effort. 1.2.1 EtikOuest: New open&close system Address EtikOuest ZA de Soullans BP 349 85303 Challans France www.etikouest.com © VIEDOC - Pour tout renseignement : contact@veillesalon.com Contact Jean-René Chesne Sales manager Phone: +33 (0)2 51 49 17 27 jrchesne@etikouest.com
  • 10. P a g e | 10 Simplissime is an Open & Close system designed and conceived for airtight bags that can thereby easily be opened to eat and reclosed to preserve. A one-use label showing that the bag has never been opened is unstuck from the packaging in order to make a window appear. This open area can be nearly as wide as the bag and also helps the consumer take or pour the product easily. The repositionable adhesive disclosed while first opening allow to reclose the the bag over and over while reducing the volume of the package as the product goes along. As the bags’ Open & Close system is airtight and resists to steam, it could either be used on grocery or fresh products’ industry. The repositionable window label can be applied automatically and the film can be cut off by packing machines, by film printers or even by Etik Ouest. Simplissime system adapts to bag’s content (Source: EtikOuest) Featuring:  ideal for grocery or fresh products  adapted to Flow packs, Quadro Seal packs or flat bottom packs  help the consumer to open an reclose the packaging  preserve the product as the reclosing system is integrated within the label  can be applied on any kind of materials even the most delicate ones Comprising:  a tamper-proof system to guarantee first opening  a pull-up corner  a tear-off moveable part with makes a window appear once it has been removed  an adhesive system to reclose the package again and again Advantages:  airtight system  easy to open system thanks to the removable label  bag reclosing is achieved by bending it over  package volume is reduced along with product use  film application and cut off is made by film printer or EtikOuest  customized shape to fit any kind of bags  cheaper than zip solutions © VIEDOC - Pour tout renseignement : contact@veillesalon.com
  • 11. P a g e | 11 1.2.2 Torus Pak: Straight-to-plate packaging Address Torus Pak Europe Representative office 10 Avenue Vergon 94340 Joinville le pont France www.toruspak.com www.innovativedesign.se Contact Laurent Boumendil Account Manager Phone: +33 (0)148 831 334 Mobile: +33 (0)614 622 241 laurent.boumendil@toruspak.com Torus Pak is a packaging solution for the food industry developed by Swedish company Innovative Design of Scandinavia AB. Torus Pak Europe N.V. sells and markets the patented Torus Pak® packaging system to the European market under license. Torus Pak Europe presented for the first time in France their innovative tray at CFIA Rennes 2012. The pack is already established in countries like the Nederland, the UK and Germany, but not really known in France. This is a “Straight-to-Plate” packaging solution for single portion meals that features a removable bottom which offers the unique possibility to easily serve the packaged meal on a plate, and still have the food presented as it was in the package. Indeed, unlike existing trays, Torus-Pak opens from the bottom, giving customers a restaurant quality meal, in their own home! Torus Pak’s ingenious system is easy to use and allows stunning food presentation (Source: Torus Pak) This feature opens up completely new possibilities for the whole food industry, from restaurants and caterers to the largest ready meal manufacturers, where current package solutions force the end users to eat out of the tray or shovel the contents onto their plates. © VIEDOC - Pour tout renseignement : contact@veillesalon.com
  • 12. P a g e | 12 As these solutions can’t offer an attractive presentation, the consumer acceptance of ready meals is affected in a negative way. By offering meals that are ready to be served on plates, hotels, caterers and ready meal producers can reach new markets and customers. “Using the Torus Pak trays for our meals can help us saving both time and money as we’ll be able to serve our clients perfectly presented meals for a minimal effort”, said Martin and Victoria at First Choice Catering in Hertfordshire, who started using Torus Pak in February. Torus Pak’s unique solution has been named winner of two prestigious innovation awards the last two years: Food Hospitality Innovativeprijs in the Netherlands 2010, and the Packaging Innovation Award in Sweden 2011. Benefits and features: • A unique solution for all types of prepared food. The system combines Torus Pak trays, top film and a Torus Pak sealing machine. • All Torus Pak trays are easy and simple to use, and have been tested on consumers of all ages and abilities. • The Torus Pak tray has all the same features as a traditional tray in strength and appearance but includes the additional feature of a pull tab that opens the package from the bottom. To use the tray simply pull the tab to open the bottom and the freshly cooked meal is perfectly presented on the plate. • MAP packaged meals can be accommodated. • The tray and film are polypropylene – can be frozen and reheated in the microwave To view the striking result Torus Pak allows you to get on: www.youtube.com/watch?v=R7BfN5nwrAQ Torus Pak is filled and sealed as usual and tolerates pasteurizing, MAP (modified atmosphere), and tough handling. Torus Pak is made of PP and can be heated in the microwave. The important difference is that it opens from the bottom by pulling the bottom off. Torus Pak offers a packaging solution that is both innovative and environmentally friendly. The thin bottom on the Torus Pak reduces the amount of material that is used, which in turn reduces the impact on the environment – both in production and recycling. Effective logistics solution Torus Pak trays are specially designed for transport on European pallets that hold 15 boxes with 720 Torus Pak trays each. Torus Pak therefore can deliver 10 800 trays per pallet, which is not only the market’s most effective logistics solution, but also reduces emissions due to the decrease in transportation. Less material consumption Torus Pak is designed to complement a standard European plate (210 mm in diameter), thereupon the tray has no unnecessary surfaces. The thin bottom on the Torus Pak tray also means that it has been possible to reduce the weight by up to 30% compared to similar tray solutions. This reduced material consumption leads in its turn to reduced impact on the environment by production, transportation, and waste management. © VIEDOC - Pour tout renseignement : contact@veillesalon.com

  • 15. P a g e | 15 PACKAGES WITH LOWER ENVIRONMENTAL FOOTPRINT Sustainability is a mega-trend amongst all industrial sectors and packaging solutions having a lower impact on the environment are sought in order make more efficient use of natural resources and energy. Indeed, the 3R principle for better packages state that reusing, recycling and reducing may help deal with increasing amount of packaging waste treatment, gas emissions, and scarcity of fossil resources… Life Cycle Assessments (LCA) is a measurement tool that allows to compare the burden on the environment of different package solutions and to choose the best possible packaging for a given product and use. Also, LCA, when part of an eco-design strategy, makes it possible to take into consideration the whole life of the packaging solution, from the raw material used to the packaging end of life with disposal. The basic idea of eco-designing is to minimize the packaging environmental footprint. The main ideas we see companies developing today to minimize the carbon footprint of their packages are basically: - Making lighter packages with expended PET and PS (Clocker pentacles) and glass replacement for instance. - Using less material with thinner films and walls… - Making recycling easier with mono material, easy to separate composite packages… - Facilitating packaging end of life treatment with biodegradable materials. Optimized packages can feature two or more of these ideas. For instance, composite packages whose plastic pot and cardboard parts are easily separated are optimized in terms of raw materials in order to make the solution cost effective. Indeed, these pots wich are optimized in terms of raw material, recycling and cost are a very good exemple of what can be done in package eco-design. © VIEDOC - Pour tout renseignement : contact@veillesalon.com
  • 16. P a g e | 16 1.3 USING LESS MATERIAL AND MAKING PACKAGES LIGHTER Many companies specialized in coextruded films have optimized their solutions in order to get improved environemental footprint. This is the case for instance of Spanich based company Plastienvase which now offers films that are thinner and that therefore have a lower impact on the environment. Companies that choose their new SOL film, which is thinner than previous solutions, also benefits from reduced costs on storage, transport and ecotax. This film material can be transparent (SOL NATURAL) or opaque (SOL BLANCO) and consists of a multilayer co-extrusion with EVOH barrier. It is available from 25 microns on and can be laminated with PET, OPA, or PP films. Another company, Vezelpas from Portugal also presented films with reduced thickness at CFIA 2012. Their latest 7 layer coextruded films are said to have the same thickness as the 5 layer ones with added properties and increased performances. Films are very much used in packaging, be it in primary packages as above or as secondary or tertiary packaging like in the case of gathering plastic bottle or securing packs on pallets. 1.3.1 DuoPlast: Stronger stretchable films Address Duo Plast SAS Service Commercial 12, avenue de la Lauzière 92600 Asnières sur Seine France www.duo-plast.fr Contact Sophie Cornilleau Sales Manager Phone: +33(0)147 30 35 89 Mobile: +33 (0)616 19 22 82 sophie.cornilleau@duo-plast.fr Duo Plast is a German manufacturer of stretch films used in the industrial and agricultural sector and for the packaging of food. • 17. P a g e | 17 The certified film offers entirely new possibilities for the food industry. Duo Food Contact is a blown stretch film that has outstanding technical properties such as extreme elongation and tear strength. Thanks to this, the film thickness can be reduced and significant material savings can be realized. Excellent adhesion properties and restraining forces increase transport security considerably. Benefits include:  Environmentally friendly and easily recyclable because of 100% polyethylene – free of PIB  Excellent transparency  Extreme extensibility and low noise processing  High puncture and tear resistance in longitudinal and transverse direction  Excellent adhesion properties for best connected film layers  Enormous restraining forces for high transport security  Completely smooth outer side prevents sticking of pallets Duo Food Contact is suitable as primary packaging for all kinds of food and for packaging raw materials for food production. It is available in film thickness of 15 microns with inside or outside cling, and as machine or hand rolls. It may also be equipped with or without double edge (DDK) Stretch film with double edges for added strength and tear resistance while reducing the amount of film used The world wide patented stretch film DDK has already attracted a lot of attention. The stretch film has won the "German Packaging Award' and the 'PIF Gold Medal' and signals a new trend in the field of load security. The unique feature of this film is the double edge, which makes it twice as strong and tear-resistant at the edges compared to conventional films. In addition, it is one-side cling, one side smooth and connects the packaged goods optimally with the pallet due to a string generation at the bottom. Another very important highlight is the unique net structure that is generated through the wrapping process. The net structure increases pallet stability significantly while enormous reductions of material consumption can be realized. © VIEDOC - Pour tout renseignement : contact@veillesalon.com

  • 26. P a g e | 26 1.6 USING MATERIALS COMPRISING RECYCLED OR RENEWABLE RESSOURCES Amongst companies displaying PET trays, many of them now offer trays made using recycled PET as this plastic material is perhaps the one that has the best collection and recycling rate. This is due to the fact that bottled drink consumption has shown a tremendous growth over the past 15 years, and that most plastic bottle are now made of PET facilitating the development of post-consumer treatment of empty bottles. Trays, pots and cups made of polypropylene and polyethylene also come in recyclecontaing format as these thermoplastic resins are easy to recycle and very much in used in the packaging industry. Besides using post-consumer material, replacing part of the plastic material used with mineral or vegetal (waste) matter or using bio-based plastics may be some other ways of reducing the burden of packaging on the environement. 1.6.1 Klöckner Pentaplast: Incorporating recycled or bio-based materials Address Klöckner Pentaplast PO Box 1165 56401 Montabaur Industriestrasse 3-5 56412 Heiligenroth Germany Phone: +49.2602 915 297 www.kpfilms.com Contact Carine Gomet Business Manager France Phone: +49 2602 915-394 Mobile: +49 170 7847110 c.gomet@kpfilms.com For more than 40 years Klöckner Pentaplast has been producing rigid films for the food and pharmaceutical packaging industries. Kp offers a full range of rigid forming films for food called Pentafood® films that:  Protect products, extend shelf lives, and ensure safety and hygiene.  Are specially formulated with unique attributes, such as barrier protection and heat resistance.  Are manufactured to look great and enhance shelf appeal.  Perform beautifully on current packaging and converting machines. SmartCycle® films contain recycled plastic beverage bottles SmartCycle mono- and multi-layer films offer a range of products with various guaranteed levels (for example 50 or 70%) of post-consumer recycled plastic bottle content. These films are certified to meet packaging regulations and to comply with all FDA regulations for direct food contact as well as all applicable EU regulations and directives for food contact. In addition, the films exceed U.S. California and Oregon regulations for rigid plastic packaging containers. These films are used for trays, clamshells, blisters, all-plastic boxes, and various other containers as well as printed signage and stationery applications. SmartCycle films provide a plastic packaging option to consumer product companies and retailers while building long-term value by helping them move toward their sustainable packaging goals. Because the SmartCycle logo may appear on the plastic containers using this film, consumers can make educated choices on their purchases. © VIEDOC - Pour tout renseignement : contact@veillesalon.com
  • 27. P a g e | 27 The SmartCycle process of making film from recycled plastic bottles saves energy, natural resources, and, ultimately, will help spur collection of bottles and potentially custom packaging. This begins with marking all packages with the SmartCycle logo derived from the petaloid base found on most PET bottles. A key goal of SmartCycle is to help people feel positive about and responsible for their packaging choice by conveying the story of sustainable packaging to the entire packaging value chain (Cycle)—consumers, retailers, OEMs, converters, and resource recovery plants. Finally, at the end of the use cycle, the goal of the SmartCycle mark is to facilitate actual recycling—not down cycling. Currently, most municipalities, retailers, and recycling companies collect only bottles and do not recycle plastic clamshells due to concern for mixing polymer types. With a unique identifying mark, SmartCycle packages could potentially allow these items to be reprocessed into new containers along with bottles made from like plastics. TerraPET™ films consist of up to 30% renewable resource content Pentaclear®, Pentaform® and Pentafood® rigid TerraPET™ films provide the same brilliant cosmetic clarity and performance properties as standard APET films and are made in part from sugar cane, TerraPET films allow companies to replace fossil fuel based material with up to 30% plant based material. TerraPET films have the same performance properties as standard APET films so there is no need to change tooling or package design. These films process on existing equipment in the same thermoforming range and have the same cuttability as standard APET. With a heat-deflection temperature of over 145°F, no special handling or logistics are necessary. Furthermore, as with standard APET films, packages produced with these films can be marked with SPI resin identification code 1 and waste from thermoforming operations is compatible with existing preconsumer recycling streams. TerraPET was selected to make thermoformed clear clamshells for the packaging of AT&T products. © VIEDOC - Pour tout renseignement : contact@veillesalon.com

  • 41. P a g e | 41 CONCLUSION Although CFIA is not dedicated to packaging, this show nevertheless offers visitors many interesting packaging solutions and equipments for the food industry. Most companies exhibiting at this show are not focused on the food industry but provide solutions for many different sectors. However, some companies are highly specialized and will not be seen in other exhibitions. Not surprinsingly, we saw at this year’s CFIA that exhibitors were much focused on offering more efficient packages in terms both of weight or thickness and recycling. This has indeed been a major trend for the past years. Consumers are more and more aware about environmental issues. When buying a product they now care not only about the content but also about the package. They are therefore looking for ecodesigned packages that show a concern for the environement and bio-based plastic, post-consumer plastics, certified paper and biodegradable materials have become a must for some companies in order to keep a competitive edge. Beside this concern for our planet, food packaging is very much focused on convenience as people spend less and less time cooking and buy more and more ready-made and on-the-go meals. Packages have therefore had to evolve and containers, bags and pots have become a real marketing tool for companies. Many of the companies seen at CFIA 2012 told us that they will be at Emballage, Paris in November with new products. So, we look forward to going to Embalage to discover their latest developments together with those of many other companies that did not make it to Rennes. © VIEDOC - Pour tout renseignement : contact@veillesalon.com
