1. A SEMINAR PRESENTAIONON BETTER UTILIZATION OF CROP RESIDUES AND THEIR PROCESSED BY-PRODUCTS IN NIGERIA: A PRACTICAL APPROACH BY DAIRO, OLATUNDE OLUKUNLE JUNE, 2011
2. INTRODUCTION The ultimate goal of any livestock industry is the attainment of sustainable livestock production with minimum costs in the shortest time possible (Eruvbetine et al., 2002) In Nigeria large quantities of agriculture and agroindustrial by-products are generated and most of them are regarded as waste and non-conventional food stuffs (Adeniyi and Ehiemere, 2003)
3. CROP RESIDUES AND THEIR BY-PRODUCTS Corn residues and by-products Rice residues and by-products Yam residue Cassava residues and by-products
8. Yam residue Yam peels are basic wastes or by-products when yam is peeled during processing for cooking and other purposes. Yam peels are fed to animals such as goats and sheep are sourced from yam processing centres, or kitchens.
15. Conclusion There is a need for optimal and better utilization of crop residues and their by-products in livestock production due to high cost of conventional feed stuffs resulting from the rapidly increasing human population in Nigeria thereby leading to competition between man and livestock for these limited resources. However, since the cost of these alternative feed stuffs are relatively cheap and there are ways of improving their nutritive values, attention should now be on their acceptability and better utilization.
