SDN – SOFTWARE DEFINED NETWORKING
Definition
SDN is a technology that can be used to manage clouds. It is an architectural
framework for managing geographically dispersed heterogeneous networks. It ideally
provides a single point of management for a physically distributed network and relies
on an open, extensible network operating system.
SDN separate data plane from control plane and requires a SDN controller
Allows programmability at the network, server,
blade, chip level
Focus on L1-L4 forwarding
SDN is primarily promoted by the Open
Networking Foundation

SDN CONTROLLERS
Definition
SDN controllers provide an abstract,
centralized view of the network
resources.
They are used to program traffic and
attribute resources to services in a
heterogeneous network.
They programs router and switches
as to where to forward data traffic.
SDN controllers can be deployed per
application, per network or in a
hierarchical (master – subordinates)
manner.
OpenDaylight
OpenDaylight is a Linux Foundation
collaborative project to provide an
open source SDN Controller.
The interfaces that are planned to be
supported by OpenDaylight are
multiple and can include OpenFlow,
OVSDP, I2RS, VxLAN, PCEP…
ONOS
ONOS (Open Network Operating
System) is an open source SDN
controller that is designed for carrier-
grade performance.
ONOS has been developed by AT&T,
NTT, Ciena, Ericsson, Fujitsu,
Huawei, Intel, NEC

ONF 2016: INTENT VS. PRESCRIPTION
Intent
ONF introduces in 2016 the
“virtualizer”, which is an abstraction
engine whose task is to translate intents
into southbound control interface. It
uses a common API that integrates
applications with infrastructure.
The rendering engine writes flow rules
and arbiter resources.
What is the target outcome (not how to
do it)?
Children under 18 cannot access web
site xxx.com
Prescription
How to deploy an intent based ion specific
hardware, virtual dependencies and
capabilities.
Look up PCRF policy.
Look up IMSI vs. age in HSS.
Ban traffic from that IMSI to that origin
server.
Project Boulder
ONF started a new open source project

SDN PROTOCOLS - OPENFLOW
Definition
SDN controllers can interface with switches and routers using a protocol called
OpenFlow.
It is a protocol that can be used to mesh layer 2 platforms and separate data plane
from user plane and provide API-driven forwarding rules in data plane.
OpenFlow is defined by ONF.
It can be deployed as a policy interface, to push rules to elements and to have
triggered-based conditions to push traffic to a specific controller.

MEF: LSO REFERENCE ARCHITECTURE
The MEF’s LSO Vision is for each
function of the service lifecycle to be
automated.
This is required to achieve agile,
assured, and orchestrated connectivity
services delivered by the Third
Network.
LSO orchestrates connectivity services
in the Third Network across all internal
and external network domains from
one or more network operators.
LSO capabilities will allow the Third
Network not only to dramatically
decrease the time to establish and
modify the characteristics of
connectivity CE 2.0 services, but will
also assure the overall service quality
and security guarantees for these
services.
