2. BED BUGS OVERVIEW
External parasitic insect
Mainly active at night
Feed on the blood of warm blooded sources, mainly
humans
Fast moving
More active in warmer climates
Can live for 10 – 20 months
Other warm blooded victims of bed bugs: Dogs,
Cats, Birds, Rodents, and Bats

3. THEY’RE BACK… BUT WHY?
1. Increased international travel
2. resistance
3. Change in general pest control
methods
4. Decreased public awareness
5. Reduced available products for
control
6. Lack of research and development
WALTER WASWA,BSC.MED.LAB
4. BED BUG BASICS
o Feed only on blood
o Feeding lasts 3 – 12 minutes
o Nocturnal
o Can detect and avoid chemicals
Excellent hitchhikers
Infestations are not always linked to unclean conditions
o Crawl up to 20 feet to feed
o A bed bug can live upto six months without feeding on its host.

6. MATING……………..AUCH!
Males pierce the female's
abdomen with his hypodermic
genitalia and ejaculates into the
body cavity.
Male bed bugs sometimes
attempt to mate with other
males and pierce their
abdomens.
This behaviour occurs because
sexual attraction in bed bugs is
based primarily on size, and
males mount any freshly fed
partner regardless of sex.

13. IDENTIFICATION
Immature:
Almost completely transparent
when unfed
Light red after feeding
Mature adults: different shades of
brown fed and unfed

14. HABITS
Attracted by warmth and
CO2
Penetrate the skin with two
hollow injector tubes
One tube for injecting saliva
The other tube for
withdrawing blood
After feeding for approx. 5 –
15 minutes, the bed bug
returns to a hiding place

15. BITE IDENTIFICATION
Typically no red center
spot
Bed bugs tend to focus
on exposed skin
Rarely occur on palms
or soles
Often occur in rows
and/or groups

16. BED BUG PREVENTION
1. Look for bugs, stains & check the seams
& puckers of the mattress.
2. If you buy used furniture or clothing, treat
it before it enters your home.
3. Clothing should be washed in hot water &
dried on the highest heat setting.
4. Furniture can be carefully inspected
before you bring it home.
5. Eliminate Clutter
6. Stop the spread!
7. Start with thorough cleaning

17. CONTROL AND ELIMINATION
Your responsibilities after you find bed bugs:
Start with a thorough cleaning
Do not remove and/or discard furniture
Wash all linens and clothing in hot water >120F
Dry all linens and clothing on high heat
Items not suitable for extensive cleaning can be
contained in plastic bags and placed outside in the
heat
Repair all cracks and crevices in living areas

18. HEALTH RISK?
Sleeplessness
Agitation
Anxiety
Emotional Stress
No conclusive evidence of disease transmission
Possible Vectors?
>20 pathogens have been found in bed bug guts
According to the Mayo Clinic (mayoclinic.com), by feeding on infected people,
bedbugs can be infected with some bloodborne diseases.
In addition, the trauma from bites can lead to secondary infections especially
when it happens in highly susceptible populations.
Researchers in British Columbia, Canada recently found MRSA and VRE infected
bed bugs in homeless shelter

residents
2. Black fecal spots

5. Blood stains from crushed bugs
6. Sweet or musty odor in severe
infestations

22. CHEMICAL
Apply residual insecticide
along junction of wall and
floor

plates

25. MKILIFI INSECTICIDE
oil is easily extracted from the leaves and seeds
=organic pesticide
Neem oil basically affects insects by intervening at
several stages of an insect’s life
It works by interrupting the reproductive cycle of insects.
Once ingested, it affects the hormonal system of the
insect, causing it to forget to eat and stop moulting,
mating and laying eggs.
This eventually sees the complete destruction of the
insect population in the designated area as the older
insects die off without producing offspring.
Neem oil is also powerfully aromatic and gives off an
odour that insects do not like, protecting plants by
making them unappealing.

26. LEAVES
Use a five gallon bucket
Fill 1/3 of the bucket with smashed/crushed neem
fruit and seed or well chopped leaves
Fill the bucket with hot water up to the 2/3 mark
Cut a bar of organic soap into thirds, add 1/3 of the
soap into the water and stir until it has dissolved
Stir mixture repeatedly for one week twice a day
Filter the solution
Spray this on your bed fulcar,
wall or any crevices

27. SEEDS OIL
To make a litre of general-purpose neem oil spray,
mix 5mls neem oil, 2mls of liquid soap and 1 litre of
water.
Add the soap to the water first and then slowly stir
in the neem oil.
Pour the mixture into a spray bottle and it is ready
to use.
You’ll need to use the mix within 8 hours as beyond
that the ingredients will start to break down.
If you’re pregnant or trying to get pregnant, consult
your doctor before using neem oil as it can interfere
with your hormonal system
