1. Don’t Make Me Think

2. IDEAS
Take advantage of the art of exploration. Google
gives employees 20% of their day to go where
they want to and what they want. The result has
been the creation of 50% of new Google products
during this time.
3. Things that make us think
• Every Question add to the cognitive workload
and is a distraction.
• How can we offer a concise and intuitive
search that is more on the obvious side and
will lessen the impact of questions. And
eroding the feeling that they site developers
understood how to make the tools work for
the public masses.

4. Optimal Choice VS. Satisfice
• Understanding that when it comes to choice
especially if its something that is new, or we are
under pressure we choose to take and pick the first
reasonable option.
• How do we take the power and put it make in the
hands of the user? Understand that most people will
not spend time thinking about the design of the site or
really pay attention to the detail. They want
something related to the old Hot and Now fast food
burger chain. They want the information they seek
and they want it now!
5. What do you really want to
do with the World Wide
Web?
• There is a huge difference between the
way we think others use websites and
how they actually use them.
• How best to understand how we
interface with a website is to SCAN
them.

6. • Following a uniform understanding of
how things work, act, and look like will
make those that rely on them happy
and more effective participants.
• Innovations: Innovate when you know
you have a better idea but take
advantage of conventions when you
don’t.

7. Visual Hierarchies
What to expect?
• There are three traits to this process
that you should implement:
• THE MOST IMPORTANT:They are Larger, bolder and are set
off by more white space. They are also usually at the top of the page in some combination of the above
pieces.
• Ideas and concepts are related logically and related visually.
• Visual representations are “nested” to help the the user figure out what
part is related to another. Doing this allows you to see all your choices
within a particular category.

8. • Understand that helping the user is the key
goal. Taking the pages and categories and
making them easily accessible helps with
finding information that is important to the
user.
• Use tabs and clickable icon prominent and
available for ease of use. It is frustrating to
have a user not know if something will or will
not take them to another location or if they
have to guess if there is a link.
10. Why Test, Do I have time for
that?
• Understanding your strengths and weakness comes
from the testing model. As in life we often have tunnel
vision especially when we are working on something
with a lot of components and something that we have
done many times it becomes intuitive to us .
• The Most important question is how does my site
reflect on the actual user?Usability Testing should be
your best friend as it will give a picture of the good,
bad, and ugly of how a user interfaces with you site.
• The question is “If not now, when?”
11. How does this all fit together?
• How did a company
save 100,000
dollars? They did a
Usability test and
found a mistake/bad
site design that
mirrored this quote.
