- Good evening! It is a great pleasure to be here. I feel very priviledged to be able to share with you some of the things we have done. Helsinki , Finland, maybe even the whole of Scandinavia is a very business oriented place. We sometimes envy ythe people in Mediterranean countries of their attitude for enjoying life as well. Our strenght is technology more being with people. Quiet, even in the sense of not talking much is somehow appreciated in our northern areas. Port business is serious business, it takes real men to take care of that - maybe that is why they sent me over here!
- ESPO, European Sea Ports Organisation awarded Port of Helsinki for Societal Integration in 2010. 9. November 2010, ESPO celebrated this award for the second time in Brussels in very handsome and dignified premises of the city hall of Brusssels. Receiving the award is an honour, especially as it was given by EU vice chairman Siim Kallas The erosion of public support for seaports has only recently been recognised as an issue that needs attention from port management. Competition for land use, negative externalities of port operations as well as safety and security concerns have over the last few decades contributed to a negative public image of many ports. This has been reinforced by the fact that ports in many cases moved out of sight of citizens. Ports are at best acknowledged as a necessary evil, but more often the general public and policy makers alike ignore the fundamental contributions ports make to the economy and society. The result is that ports often stand alone, without allies, when they run into opposition to their development. Embracing co-habitation and dialogue with cities and local communities is for many port authorities a difficult learning process since it often seems to be a distraction from the commercial rationale of port operations. Moreover the distance between ports and cities has in many cases been widened through processes of globalisation and corporatisation of port authorities. ESPO is convinced that the economic function of ports can only be sustained in the longer run if the societal function is taken seriously. The European Commission has also recognised the need to establish better dialogue between ports and cities as a priority area in both its maritime and ports policies. We, the port received this award, but in reality it belongs to the whole city of Helsinki.
- First year winner was Gijon, an immense example of how much effort is put into making it happen and winning the public opinion even right next to an industrial port. The situation is challenging for both sides. But as we are next to Gijon I believe most of you know much better what is going on there.. Gijon produced a wonderful book about their Rantabulevardin kehittäminen, kulttuuriviikko ”Black Week” sataman alueella Kiinteistöjen kehittämistä, satamanäyttelyhallin uusiminen, pyöräilyreittejä, 44 eri julkaisua (ISBN) Ympäristöhallintajärjestelmä terminaaleihin, yhteistyö arkealogiaseuran kanssa INTERREG-projekti Majakkaprojekteja, kouluyhteistyötä, historianäyttelyjä, akvaario, vierailuja sataman eri osiin
- Jotta kaupunkiyhteistyötä, määrää tai laatua voitaisiin mitenkään arvioida, oli laadittava kriteerit. Jonkinlaiset puitteet asialle. Noin vuosi ennen ensimmäistä tunnuksen jakamista, perustettiin jäsensatamista koottu ryhmä, joka jumppasi kasaan nämä näkökulmat. Osin työ perustui kunkin omiin kokemuksiin, joista ammennettiin, osin keskusteluissa ja työpajoissa työstettiin uusia mahdollisia tapoja intergroitua. Gijonin voittaessa ei näitä kriteerejä oltu vielä määritelty. Projektin päätökseksi ESPO published the Code on Practice- last spring. Also we filled out our application again.
- When planning and during the decisionmaking process we first ran into environmental issues adn thought that once we have found solutions to them there would be no more difficulties. We were wrong.
- ENVIRONMENTAL Impact assessment only required hearings of resedents and presentation obligations. As we look at the situation now, this never stopped. We kept on telling people about what exaactly was going on. Un known scare, so tried to do our utmost best to reduce this fear.. Perustimme Vuosaaren satama-lehden, kuvassa se on rakentamisaikaisessa muodossaan. Oma nettisivusto hankkeelle, jossa kaikki uusi informaatio, havainnekuvia, valokuvia, suunnitelmia karttoja, videoita. Teetimme myös pienoismalleja, joitaupdatedtarpeen mukaan, meillä oli 24h palvelunumero, säännölliset avointen ovien päivät asukkaille, intressiryhmiä ja yhteistyökumppaneita, tiedotusvälineiden edustajia, kutsuttiin jatkuvasti työmaalle. Lehdistön suuntaan työnsimme aktiivisesti uutisia virstanpylväistä ja saavutuksista, myönteisistä, jännittävistä ja poikkeuksellisista tapahtumista hankkeen ympärillä. Tuhansia vierailijoita kävi työmaalla.
- Tärkeää oli myös saada alueelle ihmisiä, ryhmiä, jotka kokisivat jotain uutta ja ainutlaatuista. Alueille saattoi nyt päästä, toiminnan alettua se ei enää olisi mahdollista. Halusimme tavoittaa myös ihmisiä, jotka ehkä eivät tulisi satamatoiminnan kutsumina. Tärkeää oli myös näyttää suuren hankkeen ihmisen kasvot. Rakentamisen takana oli ihmisiä jotka kuuntelivat ja ymmärsivät asukkaiden näkemyksiä. Yhdessä asioita puidessa saatiin oppia puolin ja toisin, suunnitelmissa voitiin ottaa huomioon asukkaiden toivomuksia. Osapuolten ymmärrys toisiaan lisääntyi. Vakituinen yleisötilaisuuskävijä tuli jo juomaan kahvia seuran vuoksi.
- The hew harbour project behind we have to wave our flag in the city center. West Harbour: emptied from most cargo activities for Jätkäsaari , Hernesaari housing and office space. There is still some area for our purposes and we need to work on that. It is not granted that we can stay here forever Being in working groups, making people part of it, co-operation with city planning,inhabitants hearings, being part of the planning actively as a party that has own ideas rather than wait around and hope fro the best.
- 2009 ksällä oli tämän näköistä. Huikeat suunnitelmat uuden kaupunginosan toteuttamiseksi olivat alkaneet toteutua.
- Tässä on lopputulos näillä näkymin, mutta siihen on vielä kovin monta vuotta. Tämän toteutuessa on, samaan aikaan matkustajalaivaliikenteen jatkuttava keskeytymättä.
- Parhainta julkisuutta sai varmasti tämä konsertti elokuun 6, 2009. Vapautuneella satama-alueella. Se oli myös erinomainen näyte siitä kuinka vapautunutta aluetta voidaan välittömästi hyödyntää. Kokemuksen toinen hyöty oli kaupungin osapuolten ja viranomaiset laaja-alainen yhteistyö. Tämänkokoista tapahtumaa tällaisella alueella ei näissä oloissa oltu ennen järjestetty. Haasteena oli paikka, jolloin joiltain osin haettiin sitä mitkä säännökset tai määräykset ovat ylipäätään voimassa. Kuka sulkee sataman jos sellainen pitää tehdä? Tai onko se edes mahdollista?
- Tämänhetkinen tilanne on tällainen. Liikenne siis pyörii aikamoisella volyymilla, matkustajia ja heidän saattajiaan kulkee, työmaaliikenne pyörii. Haasteena on hallita tilanne niin, ettei väliaikaistunnelma muodostu esteeksi liiketoiminnalle. Lehdistä luemme että liikennöinti Länsisatamassa on vaikeaa. Tilanteen hallintaan pyritään alueen suunnittelun ja rakentamisen yhteistyöryhmien myötä, joissa olemme aktiivisesti mukana. Yhteisiä, koko kaupungin organisaatiota käsittäviä ponnisteluja tehdään, jotta työ olisi mahdollisimman selkeää ja mahdollisimman moni ymmärtäisi mitä on tulossa. Se tuntematonhan huolestuttaa yleensä eniten. Tärkeää on että tieto kulkee ja että se on yhdensuuntaista. Se herättää luottamusta. Kaikkea emme ole vielä oppineet, eikä todellakaan pidä tuudittautua siihen että kaikki olisi hallinnassa. Tuntosarvet herkkinä pitää olla kaikkiin suuntiin. Välillä on tarpeen erityisonnistelut, jotta tilanne tuntuisi hyväksyttävämmältä.

- In the very center of the city we have this kind of preplanning going on. People in harbour business can easily see that fro the moment there are quite a lot of questions in the air, we work closely with city planning in this, too. The destiny of Kanavaterminal which is not used as a terminal but for temporary events, is still open.
- Co-operation wtih schools, new project to be lauched, dealing with port experience and pictures by children Higher education starting soon, going for projects also We organise events fro the publis, Baltic Herring market every October, Helsinki day, city’s and port’s birthday! European Maritime day, different ways to experiece the port. Also we work seriously with inhabitants, sometimes just chatting without issues but often dealing with something in common. - These are events where everybody is invited, some have tens of interested, some tens of thousands, we hope to that as many people as possible can find something nd have a great port experience! Thankyou!
- Eräs keino mainostaa on tuotesijoittelu, jonka tunnemme parhaiten ehkä Bond-elokuvista. Tähän tarvitaan toki vähän onneakin, hyvät ideat voivat syntyä muuallakin kuin satamassa. Tässä eduskuntavaalitenttiä kuvattiin Vuosaaressa melko kylmällä kelillä. No, mitä aiomme tehdä nyt kun tunnustus on saatu?
