2. The temporal lobe is a region of
the cerebral cortex that is located
beneath the Sylvian fissure on both
cerebral hemispheres of the
mammalianbrain
Directionally, the temporal lobes are anterior to
the occipital lobes, inferior to the frontal lobes
and parietal lobes, and lateral to the Fissure of
Sylvius, also known the lateral sulcus.
3. The temporal lobes are involved in the
primary organization of sensory input
The temporal lobe is involved in
auditory perception and is home to
the primary auditory cortex .
It is also important for the processing
of semantics in both speech and vision
The temporal lobe contains the hippocampus and
plays a key role in the formation of long-term
memory .
4. Disturbance in function of the
temporal lobe may be caused by
ischaemic or haemorrhagic
damage, as with a
cerebrovascular event (CVE).
Disturbance of temporal lobe
function may also occur with
space-occupying lesions, trauma
and may be associated with
epilepsy.
5. The most common cause of temporal lobe lesions is a cerebrovascular event:
Space-occupying lesions may be primary tumours, benign or malignant.
trauma from head injury may be involved or surgical damage when removing a
tumour from that region.
Frontotemporal lobe dementia.
Other pathologies such as multiple sclerosis can affect the temporal lobes
6. Disaventage
have identified eight principle symptoms of temporal lobe damage:
1) disturbance of auditory sensation and perception
2) disturbance of selective attention of auditory and visual input
3) disorders of visual perception
4) impaired organization and categorization of verbal material
5) disturbance of language comprehension
6) impaired long-term memory
7) altered personality and affective behavior
8) altered sexual behavior.
7. Left side lesions result in decreased recall
of verbal and visual content, including
speech perception.
Right side lesions result in decreased recognition of
tonal sequences and many musical abilities. Right side
lesions can also affect recognition of visual content (eg.
recall of faces).
8. Issue in Ecuador
Temporal lobe epilepsy is one of the most common disorders in children and
adolescents in Ecuador being most common complex partial type. These
epilepsies were found related to psychiatric morbidity of behavioral and
affective and were more common in males.
Epilepsy surgery in Ecuador is safe and provides results comparable to other
international centers. By far there have been only temporal lobe surgery
based on the application of protocols in Phase I.
