1. In this report I will be discussing the purpose of the research I have done on film trailers
and I will be explaining what research procedures I undertook, for example what sites or
books I used and why I used them. In these explanations I will be talking about how I
decided what was relevant and wasn’t relevant, how my findings will help me when I
create my own trailer, what I learnt from my questionnaire, what I learnt about
audiences, what I discovered about film trailers in my chosen genre, how I organized
my work, how I stored the material and I will also be adding a bibliography.
The purpose of all this research on film trailers I am doing is to help me understand film
trailer conventions, codes, institutional aspects, structure, narrative and much more. I
have been receiving a lot of tips throughout all my research which is really good. I have
watched many film trailers, so I know what trailers are suppose to be like and what
things need to be included and other things that can be included, for example age
ratings, name of actors, name of the film, inter titles, fast and slow paced shots. By
doing this research, my knowledge is building up much more in order for me to succeed
in my own film trailer that I am going to create very soon.
The research procedure I undertook the most was Internet searches. I mainly used
YouTube because I needed to watch many film trailers and I needed to watch the
trailers in my chosen genre repetitively to look at the sound and music, institutional
aspects, structure, narrative and much more. I also used YouTube to look at the
reaction of the audience, the comments and the amount of views the trailer had.
Looking at stuff like this helps me understand what the audience is like and it tells me
whether the film was as successful as I thought it would be. For example the two
trailers that I constantly had to watch over because they are trailers that are linked to
my chosen genre was the trailer of 22 Jump Street and Kick Ass. I noticed that there
were more positive comments on the trailer of Kick Ass than the trailer of 22 Jump
Street. There were a lot of negative comments on 22 Jump Street; a lot of people were
disappointed.
I used the Haverstock media website to upload my work onto there, sometimes I had to
put my work into categories, for example unit 1 criterion 2 and unit 1 criterion 3. I put
all my work in order from the oldest work at the bottom and newest work at the top.
I decided what was relevant or not by looking at how much information the site gave
me and how much I used it, for example YouTube was extremely useful, it had all the
research I needed, the Haverstock media website was useful because that’s where all
my work was stored. I used Google sometimes, to find out information that wasn’t in
some trailers, but I didn’t really use that site a lot, and sometimes I didn’t find answers
that I needed, so I guess Google wasn’t that relevant.
I discovered many things about film trailers in my chosen genre, for example they show
that the genre of the film is action. They make sure the audience knows the genre even
though its not written in the trailer or said. In action movie trailers, there are always
weapons and equipment that needs to be used for a fight, for physical stunts, for a
rescue etc. In action trailers there are a lot of physical stunts, fights, wars, disasters,
commotions etc. Furthermore, most of the time the men in action movies are big,
wedge and look quite scary. Sometimes the females in action movies are sidekicks and
2. other times they are the ones that need to be rescued and they are vulnerable. Action
trailers normally have loud and fact paced music in the background, the music is never
going to be romantic or anything obviously because the music has to suit the scene or
setting.
I used a few websites for my research
I learnt that audiences can get disappointed very easily, for example there were a lot of
people from the audience that were disappointed and annoyed with 22 Jump Street,
however others love it. I also learnt most people watch the film trailer of a film before
they go to watch the film in the cinema to see if it is actually worth watching, they don’t
want to waste their money obviously. Furthermore, even though people have their own
favorite genre, they still go and watch films with a different genre. My favorite genre is
actually Rom Com, but I still love watching action films and horror films. I learnt that
many people watch film trailers on YouTube however other people watch it on TV when
the trailer is advertised.
From my questionnaire I learnt that I should not have given the sheets out to pupils in
my school only, I should have given it to others, for example family members and
people outside of school. I also learnt that the majority of people, who watch film
trailers, watch them on YouTube. Furthermore I think I should have typed up more
questions on my questionnaire, so I could find out more and receive more knowledge.
My findings will help me a lot in the creation of my own movie trailer, because it has
given me ideas on what film trailer will look like and it will look good. I have taken my
time to do all this research and I have definitely did more research than I should have,
therefore my findings should help me be extremely successful in my film trailer. I
listened and read people’s opinions on film trailer, I know was some people like and
dislike, knowing this will help me a lot because I know what things to do and what
things not to do. I could also ask people who have already made film trailers or film
openings, they can give me some advice on what to do and what not to do, they can tell
my how to improve my trailer, and then can show me their trailer so I can see what a
student’s trailer is actually supposed to look like and see if it was successful or not.
Finally, a bibliography is a list of books by a particular publisher or author, on exact
subject.

Method: Some of my research was primary and some was
secondary. My primary research is the
questionnaire that I did, I went around and asked
pupils and tutors in my school. The secondary
research I did
3. Technique: I used the internet to go onto google, YouTube,
the Haverstock Media website. For primary
research I prepared a questionnaire

Organisation: I will be uploading this onto the Haverstock Media
Website and putting it into the category of: Unit 1
Criterion 4
Relevance: This report is extremely useful because it got all
the information I need in one piece of work.
