Solar deadline and rising
electricity prices create rush

TOOWOOMBA-BASED Infinity Solar has
warned a perfect storm is approaching,
fuelled by last week’s announcement of a
substantial increase in electricity prices
and a looming deadline for the
Government’s Solar Bonus Scheme.
With 42,000 eligible homeowners yet to
install solar systems ahead of the June 30
deadline for the scheme, the company is
predicting a rush for installations, said
manager John Harrison.

“We have already seen an increase in
enquiries from residents about having
solar power systems installed since last
Friday’s announcement that electricity
prices are set to rise,” he said.
“This announcement is only going to add
pressure and people could find that reliable
solar companies are booked out.

“However, this does not mean that they should
compromise on quality.

“With everyone scrambling at the last minute
to install solar panels, demand increases and
the market is opened up to businesses that do
not use the proper processes and materials,
which can be very dangerous.
“It is now more important than ever to
thoroughly research not only the
equipment you’re looking at purchasing
but also the reputation and experience
of the businesses you are dealing with.

“We have seen this happen before, with
government incentive schemes, where
dodgy operators flog the market only to
disappear again once the deal of the
day has expired.”
More than 20 solar companies went out of
business in the last six months as government
incentives decrease, which is a concern to the
industry but more so for the customers that are
left with no warranties and often inferior
equipment and installations.

“New customers need to keep in mind that,
although they are not eligible for the 44
cents/kWh feed-in-tariff, there is still a
significant opportunity to save thousands of
dollars a year with the new 8 cents/kWh feed-
in-tariff,” Mr. Harrison said.
It is important that customers are not
tempted by cheap prices and quick job times
from dodgy businesses, but install a system
that uses quality products and workmanship
that will stand the test of time and deliver
feed-in tariff benefits for many years to come.

“The use of in-house installers (
solar panel installation) rather than
contracted tradies is a key factor to consider
when choosing a solar electric panels
company,” he said.
“It really is worthwhile doing some
research to find a solar company that uses
high quality equipment and employs
trusted experienced installers.”

While the deadline to have a 44-cent
eligible system installed and the relevant
paperwork submitted is 30 June 2013, the
opportunity still exists for all new residents
wishing to make the most of solar power to
claim the current 8 cent/kWh feed-in-tariff.
