Memories

We do not remember days; we remember
moments. ~Cesare Pavese, The Burning Brand

Memory is a way of holding onto the things you
love, the things you are, the things you never
want to lose.~From the television show The
Wonder Year

We all have our time machines. Some take us back,
they're called memories. Some take us forward,
they're called dreams.

• 54. Conclusion  Documentaries gives you a glimpse of reality in a movie. It addresses creative topics that relate to the world today.

Notas del editor

1. My task for today is to educate the class about my topic. I then will explain about three different documentarians. I then will be showing a brief clip of my documentary of the class of 2010. I then will get into my class activity, which I will talk more about later. After that I will draw my conclusion.
2. This thesis statements basically means that a documentary is made to inform a person or a group of people about something that is going on in today’s society. A documentary is a film trying to express it’s feeling about a problem.
3. Broad category of visual expressions that is based on the attempt, in one fashion or another, to document reality. Referred to movies shot on film stock, it expanded to include video and digital productions that can be either direct-to-video or made for a television series. Documentaries work to identify a “filmmaking practice, a cinematic tradition, and mode of audience reception”
4. I decided to apply my information about my topic by documenting the senior class and making a documentary. Gathering candid footage of the class of 2010, capturing the best moments that we’ll never forget, with the people that we’ll always remember. I tried to create a documentary that would captures the viewers attention as if an award winning producer did it.
5. By choosing documentaries, and making it my practical application for my senior grad project. It opened up more doors to hang out with more seniors instead of just sticking with my tight group of friends. I was very intrigue to learn more about this topic. Also, by choosing this topic it’s giving me a glimpse of the major I’m going to be majoring in college. I’ll go into my communication class a little bit more prepared.
6. Establishing shots are typically, wide shots in which all actions are shown or suggested. They provide a sense of orientation for the viewers. They are showing clearly how the subjects are positioned in relation to one another. I applied this shot a lot when I was interviewing more then one person while making my documentary. Close Ups bring the audience right in action. In an instructional video, close ups are used to demonstrate how a specific task is accomplished. For example, in drama, they’re used to evoke a more emotional response. I also applied the close up when a strong statement was made by a senior. While making a documentary, you must film everything. Unlike a scripted movie, you can’t just say cut, and then action. If you ask the subject to say it again because you didn’t catch it on camera, the statement won’t be as geniune. I learned to do this a lot. I would always have a camera attached to my hand filming seniors. Sometimes people would film it for me, because I couldn’t be at a certain place at a certain time.
7. Medium Shots is typically a shot of a person from the waist up. Medium shots don’t need to be restricted to one person. Reactions shots help provide a tone and context for a scene and also help influence the audience's own emotional responses. In interview situations, reactions shots usually consist of nods and other appropriate reactions. Cutaways are close ups details of anything relevant to a scene.
8. By dividing your filming into different frames makes your documentary more creative, and brings more excitement then just having it in one shot the whole time during the footage. Different types of framing are -Foreground -Background -Dramatic Angles -Perspective -Extreme Close-Ups
9. Foreground Framing- Foreground framing is a type of framing that makes your background element your main focus. Instead of making the main focus what’s going in the over all picture. By having this frame, it makes the viewer’s focus on one particular thing.
10. Background Framing- Background framing is the exact opposite, the center of this picture is the lighthouse. As in foreground framing, the background was the main focus. Background framing just gives in emphasis to what’s in the foreground of the picture. The background of the shot acts as a frame for this picture.
11. Dramatic Angles- Tempting to shoot everything from your own eye level, but that can make for confrontational footage. This way of filming is very hard because while using a camera it’s very hard to shoot it at an eye level. This strategy is more towards photographer work.
12. Perspective- Perspective angles just gives what’s ever your shooting more depth, and it dramatizes it. A good example of this is talking a picture of someone or something from the ground and aiming the camera up.
13. Extreme Close-Ups- Often used to pick out an actor’s or a subject’s eyes. They can evoke an intense feeling of urgency, or help inform the audience of a player’s emotional state.
14. These are elements in filming that don’t cost any money, unless it’s a private property for location. These two elements played a big part in my documentary.
15. The sun gives you a natural light source, it provides an ample amount of illumination for the filming. It also has limitations. The limitations for using a natural light source is day turning into night. Also what angle the sun is coming in, because some of the footage may cause you to only be able to use the sun at a certain time.
16. The location of the movie can give you a good setting can provide context, and credibility to movies. Most of my filming was done in school or at different parks.
17. Three Point lighting is a very common lighting technique used in cinematography and photography. It can be used to illuminate the subject in an attractive way. Three point lighting consist of three components… -Key Light -Fill Light -Back lighting These three lightings help with shadow, lighting and shading.
18. Key light is the main light source, it illuminates the subject the most and it defines the overall lighting design of the scene. Key light casts the strongest shadows to the subject. This form of lighting is how must documentaries are filmed.
19. Fill light is less bright than key light and is used to illuminate the parts of the subject that cannot be reached by key light. Fill light is also used to soften the shadows of key light and to decrease the contrast of the subject's surface.
20. This is an example of how fill light would look like. It only illuminate certain parts of the subject in the film or in the photograph.
21. Back light is used to illuminate the edge of the subject from behind in order to separate the subject from its background. Back light can be very bright. Even if it's bright is doesn't compete with key light because it highlights only the edges of the subject. Back light is also known as rim light because it gives the subject a rim of light. Back lighting is also used a lot in black and what photography a lot.
22. This example of back lighting is shadowing the subject and illuminating the background. This gives you a sense that the background/ setting is very important in the film or clip.
23. Label- Label all your information correctly, and use a meaningful title. This technique came in handy while filming because I was filming a lot I would label it by the date and who was in it.
24. Movies are made to be watched. If your production doesn’t find an audience it might just as well have not been made. I when I picked my topic documentaries, I had to keep in mind the people I would be presenting too. I am presenting to my 12th grade English class and my English teacher Ms. Rieger. I took into consideration what they would want to see, so I came up with the idea to document the senior class as my application.
25. Documentary Practice is the complex process of creating documentary projects. It refers to what people do with media devices, content, form, and production strategies in order to address the creative, ethical, and conceptual problems and choices that arise as they make documentaries. Magazines and newspapers are clear connections in terms of Documentary Practice.
26. Directors dramatizes the event and show their story in a creative way. They are shoot in real time, no stage, no costumes and no scripts. The main goal of a documentary is to solve or make a problem noticeable to the public. Documentaries are a form of reality.
27. New Documentaries-Objective presentaions of everyday news. You see this every day when you watch the news. When they broadcast something that went on that day in the media. Travel Documentaries-Presentation of the travels to well known or not known places. You see this a lot on the travel network or when your watching a timeshare to a place. Social Documentaries-The problems on the life and future of the community or groups presented in this type of documentaries. The documentary I made is a social documentary. Research Documentary- Is a documentary made up of documented information from over time
28. Scientific Documentaries-Generally presenting the findings and results of a scientific research by using examples to make understandable. History Documentaries-The aim of history documentary is presenting the historical event as real as possible to make knowledge about the past. Propagandist documentaries-The propagandist films made to the explicit purpose of persuading an audience of a point.
29. The earliest “moving pictures” were, by definition, documentaries. They were single-shot moments captured on film: a train entering a station, a boat docking, or factory workers leaving work. Early film was dominated by the novelty of showing an event. These short films were called “actuality” films.
30. Propagandist tradition consists of films made with the explicit purpose of persuading an audience of a point. One of the most notorious propaganda films is Leni Riefenstahl’s Triumph of the Will. Pare Lorentz’s The Plow That Broke the Plains and The River and Willard Van Dyke’s The City are notable New Deal Productions. They all presented complex combinations of social and ecological awareness, government propaganda, and leftist viewpoints.
31. It’s a propaganda film made by Leni Riefenstahl, it was known to be the best example of propaganda in film history. It talks about the chronicles the 1934 Nazi Party Congress in Nuremberg. It was released in 1935 and became one of the best-known examples of propaganda in film history. Truimph of the Will got recognition as one of the greatest films in history.
