SAN DIEGO
FLIGHT TRAINING
With the boom in the worldwide airline industry the demand for pilots has never been stronger.
Let San Diego Flight Training International prepare you for an exciting and rewarding career as an Airline Pilot.
airlines need pilots now!
SAN DIEGO
FLIGHT TRAINING INTERNATIONAL
I want to welcome you to one of the finest flight
schools in the United States of America. We have
been training students from around the world for
almost twenty years now and have graduates of
this program flying in major airlines throughout the
USA and the world.
SDFTI is unique in that it not only is located in one
of the best areas in the USA to learn to fly,
San Diego is also one of the most popular places
in the USA for tourists to visit.
I look forward to the opportunity to meet with you
in the future and offer my personal assistance
throughout your selection of a flight training
program and once you begin your training with us.
Together we will make you aviation dreams your
aviation reality
Phil Thalheimer
President
SDFTI is located at San Diego's main training airport, Montgomery Field
Municipal Airport, just 20 minutes to the North of the city centre.
San Diego is renowned for its blue skies and fantastic climate that make it
the ideal flight training environment, resulting in fewer disruptions to you.
The Institute is approved by the United States Federal Government to train
overseas students and the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) to provide
a range of pilot training licences and endorsements. This includes approvals
to train for the Private Pilot Licence, Commercial Pilot Licence, Constant
Speed Unit/Retractable Endorsement, Multi Engine Endorsement, Night VFR
Rating, Instrument Rating, Aerobatics Endorsement, Formation Endorsement,
Tail wheel Endorsement and Instructor Rating.
We have a fleet of over 16 training aircraft including:

We also operate our own aircraft maintenance facility that
provides us with aircraft maintained to the highest possible
safety standards.
Montgomery Field Municipal Airport is used for pilot training,
private flying and charter flying. The airport consists of 6 fully
operational runways, control tower, navigation aids and a
large number of aviation related businesses. Located in San
Diego's northern suburbs it is easy to get to and is well
serviced by public transport.

If becoming an Airline Pilot is your dream, then
you're fortunate that there has never been a
better time to get into this career. With the rapid
development of many economies, especially in
the Asia-Pacific region and the advent of many
new budget airlines, the equation is simple.
Improving economies means more people have
more disposable income to spend and budget
airlines mean that flying is as cheap as it's ever
been. Put the two together and you've got a
situation where more
people than ever
before can afford
to fly - And they
are doing just
that!
This has resulted in a boom in the aviation
industry that can now help your dream become
a reality in a relatively short period of time,
unheard of a few years ago. Many airlines are
experiencing one problem - they buy the
additional aircraft and hire the ground crews but
there just aren't enough pilots around. In fact for
every new aircraft an airline purchases, 12
additional pilots are required. That's why they
need you.
Forecasts are that the world will need 467.000
more Commercial Pilots by 2030. That's 24,500
new pilots EVERY year. Boeing predicts that nearly
40% of all openings for pilots will be in the
Asia-Pacific region to cater for the soaring travel
market.
If you're still not convinced, we suggest you the
research for yourself. Just do a web search on
pilot shortages and demand for pilots and you'll
find many articles that refer to the current and
forecast demand.
As we are a pilot training institute not a job
placement provider, at SDFTI we can't guarantee
you a job but we do guarantee first class training
that will provide you with every opportunity to
succeed.
So what's stopping you? If you're confident you
have what it takes, then now is the time to get
started.
your future – your career
SAN DIEGO
FLIGHT TRAINING
internationally recognised training
The training we provide is conducted
following the United States FAA (Federal
Aviation Administration) syllabus which
meets ICAO (International Civil Aviation
Organisation) standards.
Most countries are members of ICAO
and each member country will recognise
the licence of the other. However if you
plan on working in another member
country you will need to convert your
licence to a local licence.
In most cases this is relatively simple
and requires you to:
Pass a local Aviation Medical,
Pass a local Conversion Exam
Pass a local Flight Test.
For details about converting your
FAA licence to your local licence,
either ask us or contact your local
Department of Civil Aviation.
pilot training and how it all works
You will progress through your training in stages and for each stage there is the practical flight
training followed by a flight test and theoretical training followed by a theory exam or exams.
Step 1 Basic flying
sequences for Private
Pilot Licence (Weeks 1-6)
You will progress through your training in stages and for each stage there is the practical flight training followed by a flight
test and theoretical training followed by a theory exam.
First thing we need to do is teach you
"how to fly' an aircraft. This involves
sequences such as Effect of Controls,
Straight and Level Flight, Climbing and
Descending, Turning, Take off and
Landing etc.
On average you will do 25 hours dual
flying (i.e with an Instructor) and 5
hours solo flying
(i.e on your own).
Step 2 Navigation
training for full Private
Pilot Licence (Weeks 7-12)
Okay so now you can fly the aeroplane
but if you want to take it on a long
distance flight the next thing you need
to learn is how to navigate the aircraft,
so in stage 2 we do the navigation
training for the full Private Pilot Licence.
You will learn how to read a map, make
a flight plan and find your way from
point A to point B using Visual Flight
Rules (VFR) or visual navigation. This
simply means you look out the window
and identify features on the ground like
lakes, roads, cities, rivers, railway tracks
etc from your map to identify where you
are. The average student requires
approximately 10 hours dual and 10
hours solo for this stage.
The theory course requires you to study
subjects such as Navigation, Flight Rules,
Meteorology, Human Factors in Flight,
Aerodynamics and Aircraft General
Knowledge before sitting for the PPL
theory exam.
Once you have passed your PPL flight
test/check ride you can fly anywhere in
the United States as a Private Pilot.
A Private Pilot can fly for recreational
purposes but cannot be paid to fly.
Therefore if you want to make an income
from flying, you now need to keep
training for your Commercial Pilot
Licence.
Before sitting for a CPL flight test you
need:
" To have a minimum 250 hours total
flight time.
" To have passed the CPL theory exam.
This comprises subjects such as:
Navigation, Flight Rules, Aircraft
so what
now??
After you have completed your
CPL with Multi Engine
Endorsement and Instrument
Rating course you now have
the minimum qualifications
required to apply directly to an
airline.
"But I don't know how to fly an
airliner" I hear you say. Don't
worry, the airlines don't expect
you to be able to fly an
airliner. If they decide to offer
you a job, they will choose
which type of airliner they
want you to fly and they will
send you for "Type Training"
on that particular aircraft
(e.g a Boeing 737, an Airbus
330, an MD 80 or whatever ).
At the completion of your
training you'll be a qualified
"First Officer" sitting in the
right seat in the cockpit under
command of the Captain.
General Knowledge, Aircraft Performance,
Aerodynamics, Meteorology & Human
Factors in Flight.
" To have demonstrated the required standard
of flying to be recommended for a flight test.
Step 3. Instrument Rating
(Weeks 13-25)
All flying through to the PPL flight test is under
VFR (Visual Flight Rules). As we explained above,
VFR requires you to be able to see out the
window and identify features on the ground so
that you know where you are.
Do you think that this technique would be
suitable for an Airline Pilot flying a large Airliner
between, for example, Mumbai and San Diego?
Of course not: Airliners fly at night (so you can't
see the ground), they usually fly at 35,000 -
40,000 feet (so it's far too high to see anything),
they fly above clouds, in clouds, above oceans
and at great speeds (about 850km/hour) - all
making the VFR technique unsuitable.
Therefore if you want to become an Airline
Pilot you need to continue with your training to
learn to fly and navigate by using the aircrafts'
instruments and under a different set of rules
known as Instrument Flight Rules (IFR)
Your Instrument Rating course includes
approximately 20 hours of dual simulator
training as well as 20 hours of dual flight time
before concluding with your IR Flight Test/Check
Ride. You will also need to pass the Instrument
Rating theory exam.
Step 4. Commercial Pilot
Licence (Weeks 26-40)
During this phase you will undertake further
intensive training with an Instructor to bring your
flight proficiency up to the standards required of
a Commercial Pilot.
Step 5. Multi Engine
Endorsement (Weeks 41-48)
All your training until this point has been in a
Single Engine aircraft. As most airliners have at
least 2 engines, you will need to learn to fly a
Multi Engine Aircraft and pass a Multi Engine
Endorsement check ride. You will need
approximately 15 hours of flight training to
complete this endorsement.
Step 6. Flying hours time
building (Weeks 49-51)
Before you sit your final flight test/check ride,
you need to have accumulated a minimum 250
hours of flight time. We use Weeks 49-51 to
build your final hours so that you reach this
minimum.
Step 7. CPL flight test/check
ride (Week 52)
what do our Students have to say about SDFTI?
“SDFTI is a great school and I am
really enjoying it here. San Diego
has fantastic weather, the airport is
not too busy and overall San Diego
is a great place to be”.
Sanijin Mehanagic
from Bosnia
"SDFTI is one of the best flying
schools and I definitely recommend
you joining it. I am from Dubai
and I want to fly Emirates and I will
because of these guys"
Clive Dias
from UAE
“I am only 19 and looking forward
to a career in aviation. Training
here in San Diego, beautiful skies
with real people flying real planes.
Hope to see you here soon"
Jesus Zazueta
from Mexico
"SDFTI is well equipped with all the
facilities you need including its own
written test facilities. The instructors
are professional yet pretty chilled
out. For me, SDFTI definitely yes! "
Anamitra Chatterjee
from India
“I would like to thank you for your
kind hospitality and support since
I arrived in San Diego, I really feel
at home. Everything at SDFTI is
made to make flight training an
enjoyable experience, keep it up”.
Sobhy El Sehrawy
from Egypt
“I've had a fantastic time here in
San Diego and recommend SDFTI
to anyone wanting to embark on
an aviation career. At SDFTI you'll
develop the skills you need to
succeed”.
Alanoud Alhejailan
from Saudi Arabia
San Diego is a cosmopolitan city with people and
students from all over the world, so if you're
looking for particular local food or something
special from home, you're likely to find it here.
San Diego is reknowned for its blue skies and
good climate which makes it the ideal location
for flight training. We have plenty of activities to
keep you busy, from great beaches for swimming
and surfing, bike tracks, hiking in the nearby hills,
world class golf courses, buzzing nightlife and
plenty of social and cultural events throughout the
year. You can even go snow skiing within just a
couple of hours of the city during winter.
If you need help with accommodation we can
offer two options. First we can arrange a studio
apartment that's just a few minutes walk from the
college or, if you prefer, we can offer Homestay
Accommodation (i.e live with a local person/
family that provides a room and meals). Many
of our students use the Homestay service as a way
to settle in and in most cases they then end up
sharing an apartment with new friends made at
SDFTI. We also offer an airport pick up service.
So, with all your training, accommodation and
entertainment needs right here in San Diego,
where else would you rather be??
what’s it
like living in
SAN DIEGO
and where
can I live?
There are no formal academic requirements to train as
a pilot however you must:
" Have a high standard of English. The FAA rule is that
you must be able to "read, speak and understand
English" We may ask you to conduct a test prior to
starting with us and if you think you need some
English training, we can offer remedial English on
site at our campus. Ask us for details.
" Have passed or be able to pass a Class 2 FAA
Aviation Medical Exam.
Your aviation medical can be done after arrival in the
United States however in many countries the FAA has
approved local medical examiners (AME's) that can do
the test for you. If there is an FAA approved doctor near
you, it's a good idea to do the aviation medical before
you come to the United States. For anyone with good
general health (and yes, you can wear glasses),
the medical should not be difficult to pass.
So what do you I
need get in?
How long is the course?
The CPL with Multi Engine Endorsement and Instrument
Rating course takes the average student approximately 12
months to complete.
When can I start?
We have regular course start dates commencing the
second Monday of every month.
How do I enrol?
Complete an application form and preferably scan and
email to us. We will then send further details about the
applying for your Student Visa.
Note: If you are working with one of our Approved
Representatives, they will assist you through the Student
Visa application process.

  • 4. If becoming an Airline Pilot is your dream, then you're fortunate that there has never been a better time to get into this career. With the rapid development of many economies, especially in the Asia-Pacific region and the advent of many new budget airlines, the equation is simple. Improving economies means more people have more disposable income to spend and budget airlines mean that flying is as cheap as it's ever been. Put the two together and you've got a situation where more people than ever before can afford to fly - And they are doing just that! This has resulted in a boom in the aviation industry that can now help your dream become a reality in a relatively short period of time, unheard of a few years ago. Many airlines are experiencing one problem - they buy the additional aircraft and hire the ground crews but there just aren't enough pilots around. In fact for every new aircraft an airline purchases, 12 additional pilots are required. That's why they need you. Forecasts are that the world will need 467.000 more Commercial Pilots by 2030. That's 24,500 new pilots EVERY year. Boeing predicts that nearly 40% of all openings for pilots will be in the Asia-Pacific region to cater for the soaring travel market. If you're still not convinced, we suggest you the research for yourself. Just do a web search on pilot shortages and demand for pilots and you'll find many articles that refer to the current and forecast demand. As we are a pilot training institute not a job placement provider, at SDFTI we can't guarantee you a job but we do guarantee first class training that will provide you with every opportunity to succeed. So what's stopping you? If you're confident you have what it takes, then now is the time to get started. your future – your career
  • 5. SAN DIEGO FLIGHT TRAINING internationally recognised training The training we provide is conducted following the United States FAA (Federal Aviation Administration) syllabus which meets ICAO (International Civil Aviation Organisation) standards. Most countries are members of ICAO and each member country will recognise the licence of the other. However if you plan on working in another member country you will need to convert your licence to a local licence. In most cases this is relatively simple and requires you to: Pass a local Aviation Medical, Pass a local Conversion Exam Pass a local Flight Test. For details about converting your FAA licence to your local licence, either ask us or contact your local Department of Civil Aviation.
  • 6. pilot training and how it all works You will progress through your training in stages and for each stage there is the practical flight training followed by a flight test and theoretical training followed by a theory exam or exams. Step 1 Basic flying sequences for Private Pilot Licence (Weeks 1-6) You will progress through your training in stages and for each stage there is the practical flight training followed by a flight test and theoretical training followed by a theory exam. First thing we need to do is teach you "how to fly' an aircraft. This involves sequences such as Effect of Controls, Straight and Level Flight, Climbing and Descending, Turning, Take off and Landing etc. On average you will do 25 hours dual flying (i.e with an Instructor) and 5 hours solo flying (i.e on your own). Step 2 Navigation training for full Private Pilot Licence (Weeks 7-12) Okay so now you can fly the aeroplane but if you want to take it on a long distance flight the next thing you need to learn is how to navigate the aircraft, so in stage 2 we do the navigation training for the full Private Pilot Licence. You will learn how to read a map, make a flight plan and find your way from point A to point B using Visual Flight Rules (VFR) or visual navigation. This simply means you look out the window and identify features on the ground like lakes, roads, cities, rivers, railway tracks etc from your map to identify where you are. The average student requires approximately 10 hours dual and 10 hours solo for this stage. The theory course requires you to study subjects such as Navigation, Flight Rules, Meteorology, Human Factors in Flight, Aerodynamics and Aircraft General Knowledge before sitting for the PPL theory exam. Once you have passed your PPL flight test/check ride you can fly anywhere in the United States as a Private Pilot. A Private Pilot can fly for recreational purposes but cannot be paid to fly. Therefore if you want to make an income from flying, you now need to keep training for your Commercial Pilot Licence. Before sitting for a CPL flight test you need: " To have a minimum 250 hours total flight time. " To have passed the CPL theory exam. This comprises subjects such as: Navigation, Flight Rules, Aircraft
  • 7. so what now?? After you have completed your CPL with Multi Engine Endorsement and Instrument Rating course you now have the minimum qualifications required to apply directly to an airline. "But I don't know how to fly an airliner" I hear you say. Don't worry, the airlines don't expect you to be able to fly an airliner. If they decide to offer you a job, they will choose which type of airliner they want you to fly and they will send you for "Type Training" on that particular aircraft (e.g a Boeing 737, an Airbus 330, an MD 80 or whatever ). At the completion of your training you'll be a qualified "First Officer" sitting in the right seat in the cockpit under command of the Captain. General Knowledge, Aircraft Performance, Aerodynamics, Meteorology & Human Factors in Flight. " To have demonstrated the required standard of flying to be recommended for a flight test. Step 3. Instrument Rating (Weeks 13-25) All flying through to the PPL flight test is under VFR (Visual Flight Rules). As we explained above, VFR requires you to be able to see out the window and identify features on the ground so that you know where you are. Do you think that this technique would be suitable for an Airline Pilot flying a large Airliner between, for example, Mumbai and San Diego? Of course not: Airliners fly at night (so you can't see the ground), they usually fly at 35,000 - 40,000 feet (so it's far too high to see anything), they fly above clouds, in clouds, above oceans and at great speeds (about 850km/hour) - all making the VFR technique unsuitable. Therefore if you want to become an Airline Pilot you need to continue with your training to learn to fly and navigate by using the aircrafts' instruments and under a different set of rules known as Instrument Flight Rules (IFR) Your Instrument Rating course includes approximately 20 hours of dual simulator training as well as 20 hours of dual flight time before concluding with your IR Flight Test/Check Ride. You will also need to pass the Instrument Rating theory exam. Step 4. Commercial Pilot Licence (Weeks 26-40) During this phase you will undertake further intensive training with an Instructor to bring your flight proficiency up to the standards required of a Commercial Pilot. Step 5. Multi Engine Endorsement (Weeks 41-48) All your training until this point has been in a Single Engine aircraft. As most airliners have at least 2 engines, you will need to learn to fly a Multi Engine Aircraft and pass a Multi Engine Endorsement check ride. You will need approximately 15 hours of flight training to complete this endorsement. Step 6. Flying hours time building (Weeks 49-51) Before you sit your final flight test/check ride, you need to have accumulated a minimum 250 hours of flight time. We use Weeks 49-51 to build your final hours so that you reach this minimum. Step 7. CPL flight test/check ride (Week 52)

  • 9. San Diego is a cosmopolitan city with people and students from all over the world, so if you're looking for particular local food or something special from home, you're likely to find it here. San Diego is reknowned for its blue skies and good climate which makes it the ideal location for flight training. We have plenty of activities to keep you busy, from great beaches for swimming and surfing, bike tracks, hiking in the nearby hills, world class golf courses, buzzing nightlife and plenty of social and cultural events throughout the year. You can even go snow skiing within just a couple of hours of the city during winter. If you need help with accommodation we can offer two options. First we can arrange a studio apartment that's just a few minutes walk from the college or, if you prefer, we can offer Homestay Accommodation (i.e live with a local person/ family that provides a room and meals). Many of our students use the Homestay service as a way to settle in and in most cases they then end up sharing an apartment with new friends made at SDFTI. We also offer an airport pick up service. So, with all your training, accommodation and entertainment needs right here in San Diego, where else would you rather be?? what’s it like living in SAN DIEGO and where can I live?
  • 10. There are no formal academic requirements to train as a pilot however you must: " Have a high standard of English. The FAA rule is that you must be able to "read, speak and understand English" We may ask you to conduct a test prior to starting with us and if you think you need some English training, we can offer remedial English on site at our campus. Ask us for details. " Have passed or be able to pass a Class 2 FAA Aviation Medical Exam. Your aviation medical can be done after arrival in the United States however in many countries the FAA has approved local medical examiners (AME's) that can do the test for you. If there is an FAA approved doctor near you, it's a good idea to do the aviation medical before you come to the United States. For anyone with good general health (and yes, you can wear glasses), the medical should not be difficult to pass. So what do you I need get in? How long is the course? The CPL with Multi Engine Endorsement and Instrument Rating course takes the average student approximately 12 months to complete. When can I start? We have regular course start dates commencing the second Monday of every month. How do I enrol? Complete an application form and preferably scan and email to us. We will then send further details about the applying for your Student Visa. Note: If you are working with one of our Approved Representatives, they will assist you through the Student Visa application process.
