❓❓❓ Why is it so hard to "learn" new cultures ❓❓❓
As cultural broker and coach, I get this question all the time. For people like me who naturally adapt to new teams and topics, pick up cultural patterns and (10+) languages, it's all too clear. Picking up codes and switching to the right one is not only easy, but also creative and fun. I loved switching between 5 and more languages during one single meeting while working in the European Institutions in Brussels.
But many of my customers and expats-to-be are struggling with this - and it's NOT about IQ or Leadership style, not about your own cultural background and NOT about the amount of information you pack into an intercultural or communications workshop. This is why not all workshops are created equal.
💡 Now I found an exciting study that explains different learning styles and explains what I have been doing all my life and in my professional trainings without having the right wording for it:
👉 Implicit learning and pattern recognition
❓ What does that mean?
➡️ It's not about how "smart" you are, it's about how your brain learns
➡️ It's not about the information itself, it's about how it is delivered and how you are nudged to digest and manage new information
➡️ It's not only about how your brain works now, but how we train it to work from now on, using the neuroplasticity of our brain
➡️ It's not about how much you know, but how you use and connect the different informations you have available
➡️ That's why I never suggest IQ tests for placements abroad or for expat preparations
➡️ That's why I never do Input-only How-To Lectures
I prepared some slides about this phenomenon and the impact on intercultural postings, hirings and management for companies. I hope they trigger your pattern learning :-)
