The aim is to describe the situation of open access in six countries of Southern Europe (Portugal, Spain, France, Italy, Greece and Turkey). These countries share some common features in the field of scientific communication, such as a significant presence of their own languages in scientific dissemination, the predominance of publications in Social Sciences and Humanities, the low proportion of commercial publishers, and a lack of interest in standardizing publications to increase their quality and visibility. We want to provide an overview of the current situation of the six countries with regard to four areas (scientific journals, books, institutional repositories, and policies for promoting open access) and also some considerations and reflections about future actions that can be carried out by libraries. (This presentation will be based upon the "Conclusions" of the report Open access in Southern European countries, Madrid: Fecyt, 2010).
