San Pedro de Atacama is located 1,670 km north of Santiago in northern Chile. It can be reached by flying into Calama airport or taking a bus. Popular day trips from San Pedro include visiting the Valley of the Moon and Death Valley, the Cordillera de la Sal salt flats, and Toconao village near the Salar de Atacama salt flat where flamingos can be seen. A longer excursion is visiting the El Tatio Geysers, a geothermal field where steam rises from fumaroles at sunrise, located 4,200 meters above sea level in the Andes mountains.
