Emerging economies against climate change
By: Florencia Bunge
The last weekend I read several newspaper articles in which statements Michel
Jarraud, secretary general of the WMO, who says that the temperature of the
atmosphere continues to increase and, consequently, the sea level is also included.
This led me to a couple of thoughts: world leaders are doing something to mitigate
the effects of climate change, and just how prepared are we to deal with these issues.
In response to my questions I gave myself the task of investigating more detail and I
found the report of the Global Legislators Organization (GLOBE International),
published last month, indicating that emerging leaders are those who keep head on
climate change legislation .
According to the report of GLOBE, countries like China, Mexico, Bolivia, El Salvador,
Guatemala, Kenya, Micronesia, Mozambique, Nigeria and Switzerland lead the
momentum of significant legislation related to climate and energy. While other nations
like Venezuela, United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia and Canada have no outstanding
legislation. All countries studied in the report, a total of 66, covers the 88% of
emissions of greenhouse gases emitted. Stresses, however, that of these only 62 are
developing a legislation to counter the effects of climate change by human activity.
On March 23 was the World Meteorological Day, we must remember the need to do
an international consensus that emerging economies not only promote effective
legislation to counter the effects of climate change. As global citizens, we need to do
everything to contribute our little grain of sand to this problem.
